A BOX.

-. if jjixojr,

II.L.,

November 10

This town was intensely cxcitcd yesterday upon the discovery of a box in (ho river, about half way to Nelson etation, six miles distant, containing

body of a man with his head and feet chopped off and packed in with tho body. The remains were of a person but reconly deceased, decomposition not having taken place, and tho features being as natural as if 'as?!eop. •Tho-box*was weighed down with atones and secured to f). willow by a '"rope, wieh was discovered by a fisher man. It seemed evident that whoever deposited the body in the river intended shortly to remove it. The head, feet and limbs were rudely chopped off. All thus far in connection with the affair is mystery, and there is inteuso cxeitemcnt.— Chicago Evenit a

IVow and Tlseu.

Among the Americans who attended tho public broakfast to Mr. Garrison, in Birmingham, was Gcnaral Itichardsoh, late of the Confederate urmv, who snid ten years ago he would if2*

not have deemed it possible that hcBhould ever appear on the same platform with Mr. Loyd Garrison, Mr. Goorgo Thompson, and Mr. Levi Coffin but his opinions on the question of slavery had quite changed whether b}' ratiocination or b}T tho logic of events ho would not stay to inquire.Tho Southern people were determined'to accept the new order of things, and to show what brave and true men could do when their every-day life was broken and they had to start afresh under altered circumstances. They wished to do all in their power to educate and elevate the blacks. lie felt bound to add his testimony to what had been stated as to the docilty of tho blacks. There was not a more docile race-of men on the earth. They were confiding, warm-hearted faithfui, sympathetic, possessed of great physical energy and power, and only required to bo educated to make ex^el

Henry Ward Beecher recently said if ho was a Pope—no, a lving—he thought he should make a better King than a Pope— no young man should bo a journeyman without having a piece of latrd. There is nothing that anchors man like ground.- A young man that has got a lot in the city, or tin acre in the country, with a good advisor on it, gives a mortgage to the State that- he will be thrifty, honest, sober and industrious. Such a man the devil-soon abandons. Where you h£ve a whole community of laborers, eoeiety begins to approach the ideal of American industry.^ lie liked 1

So highly did the Democratic Executive Committee of this State regard his soundness and abilitj7 that during tho last canvas, said Committee imported him for stumping puposes. It will bo recoilectod that he addressed tho Demociats of Terra Haute by upccial invitation, and his speeches wore praised by the dour/)d as being of a superior character.-'- He makes the following reply, through his pa per. to an assertion by General Sheti dan that the rebellion was a crime. "Rebellion a crime? Liur in youthroat, Phil. Sheridan Every hour justifies the acts of those who, from Bull Run to Richmond, through four years of

adelphia more than Now York or any other city in the country, not because it has cleaner streets or broader brims, but because there ia a larger per centago of houses owned by those who occupy them thnn in any other city in the world. That is the true idea of American industry.—It must be also virtuous and ^ust be deoply rooted in prosperity in tho household. "t ./

It is a curious fact, that it a man is lost in tho woods and continues walking, he will" invariably go round in a "bfrcle, costantly veering- to tho left band.^It is because the right side of every human body (except in the case of left-handed people) is more developed than tho left. Consequonty %he muscles on that .side aro strongest, and tend to gradually throw the whole body round, unless the aim is directed to some particular point.
