Amorous but ITnsucceiwltil. On Sunday evening last, a young roan, whom for tho sake of convenience, wo call John, went to visit the girl whom he would cnll his own. The fair one resides n^ar the canal. During the evening, tho young man of tho name of John was unablo to conceal the wish of his heart, and in tender accents declarod his desire that tho young lady should consent to be his, Ho met with a flat refusal. Tho ardent John still pressed hor further, declaring that if she did not marry him, ho would then and there drown himself in tho brinjT waters of the canal. As this threat did not effect tho desired purpose, ho proceeded to carry it out. lie plunged fearlessly into tho murky flood, and waded out until tho chilly water reached over his 6hou 1 ders. will bo remen.bered that tho ovening on which this occurred was nono of the warmest. Rotreating before finally carrying out his purpose, John cried out, shivering with cold "W-w-will you marry me now "No."
In he plunged again, this timo until tho water reached his neck, and again he haltod before the last plungo. "W-w-will you marry me now?' "No."
Again ho wont in, this timo going fairly under water, so far that only the top of his head could be discovered abovo tho surface. But lie emerged and staggorod out of' the canal, and ehivoring worse than evor, spluttered out: "N-n-now w-w-will you m-m-marrv me?" "No." "Well, I d-d-don't c-care a d-d—n whether you m-marry mo or-not.— You won't get me into that canal again."
Nor did he again essay his fortunes in the uncertai deep. Shivering and chattering with his teeth, ho quietly departed, and returned to his home a sadder, and let us hope, a wiser man.

Keeping Cider Sweel. A correspondent of tho Prairie Far mer—after giving sufficient reasons why grated horseradish should not! be "used for tho purpose of keeping cider sweet, pointing out not onlyj how surely it will ruin the flavor ol the cider, but likewise that it is by no means a sure preventive of fermentation—gives the following advice on the subject. As it is now 'eider time." it may bo of service to some of our readers: "Perhaps the best substance for keening cider sweet that can be readi 1\ procured in almost any locality, is mustard, added in about the proportion of a pound to a barrel. If the
dder is not of good strength, half a
pound will do. It is then best to put the cracked seeds in a long nmslin bag and drop it-inlo the bung hole of tho barrel. By this means the seed are retained in tho barrel. Ground mustard will not nswer the purpose, as the oil, which is the preservative agent, is extracted beforo the seeds are ground.
Another excellent substance designed to effect the samo result is the bisulphite of lime. This agent works to suppress fermentation by means ot tho sulphurous acid of which tho sulphite of lime is in pari composed. "Independent of these methods, all of which aim to abstract, the oxygen— a subsiat.ee the name of which signi lies acid former— the liability of fruit juices to pass into fermentation may be diminished by treeing them from the pulp of tho fruit fr which they are expressed. 'Lhis may bo accom jtlished by taking care to properly clarify the juice by repeatedly strain ing it before it is barrelled and rack iiig it off by means of a cyphon after the pomace or Ices have settled to the bottom of tho ca^k. "It must also be borne in mind that tho lower the temperature to which the eider is exposed, the less is the liabilitv to sour."
laM Walking.
At the Ft an I in County Fair, held fit Malone, N. Y., a few weeks ago, a Frenchman hot that ho could waile a quarter of a mile quicker than the fastest horso on tho ground could trot half a mile. The bet was taken and tho Frenchman won his wager, against A horse that trotted in 2:40.

PAN-ANGLICAN.—Wo are asked the meaning of tho term Pan Anglican, as applied to tho recent ecclesiastical council at Lambeth, England. Ihe prefix Pan is a Greek word, meaning all Anglican is well enough under stood as meaning English. Wo might, therefore unite the name All-English. Tho Pan-Anglican, or All-English Council, was a council of bishops of all tho churches springing from and directly related, to tho Established Church of England.
