Mnrridgc is that conglomeration of itho sexes as is considered constitutional in all (Countries but it is raove particular!/ one of tlie United States. \Vhen a man so far forgits himself as to git marrid, Ho bids farewell to tho Declaration of Independence, and becomes at once an honorary member of tho nights of the Garter, an Order established by tho Crusaders in the "Limes that tried men's soles."
Different folks havo different reasons for marrying some marry for love, somo for riches, nomo because they want to, and sonic because they can't help it! When raan falls in Jove, he takes to readir. tho New York Ledger, and wearin' lavender colored kids, and patent leather boots as piachcs his toes, and puttin1 "new mown hay" onto his pocket handkerchief. Then ho forgets to put sirgar in hia coffeo, and finds mistakes in his cash account. Then ho takes to drinkin' Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup, and putting squills on his hair, an' partin tho same in tho middlo of the top of his head. As the timo approaches for him to be hitched to the adored of his huzzum, ho feels as if a eel was crawlin' down his back, and little Gupids with wings and without atiy «lq^hes on, was sin gin' the Star Spangled Banner in tho air all around him. ^?hen like the prodigal son ho goes on from bad to wus, until he gits his name in the daily papers under the proper hcadin', and tells the world ho is^nited in padlock, and that "no cards isplaj'od, and sends some gingerbread and pop beer to tho editor, who wiffies tho happy pear long life and many of 'em!
Then comes the hunnoy moon, and a bridle trip to Ningary or Mammoth Cavo or Bridge of Size. After this tho 'hunney moon is all moonshine, until a still small voice announces that thoro's a "angel in the house," as tho poics say but it alwa3rs seemed to me moro like the D—ickens in the house •when I hear 'em. After a while there is family jars, which jars aint fit to preserve friendship in they arc "of the earth, earthly 1"
When Araminta and I got marrid, after a short courtship of 17 "Winters, durin' which "sho never told her lovo, but let conccalcmcnt, like a worm in the mud, feed onto her damaged cheek," wo had lots of presents of tin •ware, short clothes, spoons, and other •wcarin' apparel, but rather more spoons than anything eltp. It wa3 a gpooney timo. But the short clothes still lies in the Bureau drawers a monument and a mockery to boyish dreams and disappointed ambishujn As the scorched poit, Burns, says '•The best laid sebemeg of men and mice
Oft gang aglee,"
But Araminta and I are drawin down tho veil of life together, still lovin', still hopin' that the time will como when we shall have to provide an extra spoon and porringer. Trooly, hope is the sheet anchor to the sole.— Long may she wave!
But marridg is a divine institooshun, moro so than a Kepublican form ol government or the Dimocratic party. Adam cudent live with Mrs. Adam, 6ni-.ix or no snaix. And becoz they raised Cain after the}7 was married, it is no sign other folks should "raise Cain" in the married stait! Becoz they et up the Lord's winter apples, it's no sine married people should make each other's hair come out before the usual timo. Marridg is mootual, and one can't get along without the other no more than a child can teter on a board without a child at the other cend of it. "Woman to a man is like the bob to & kite, the more she is attached to him tho higher she can fli! Marry early and marry offen, and when you get a good wife stick to her like shoomaker's wax to a hot stove, or Spaulding's glue to broken china.
Such is tho law and the profits. Piccefully yours, A. HEAD.
The Pendulum.
A few years ago a gentleraan in Boston having a leisure hour sauntered Into the court room where an interesting trial was in progress. Directly over the head of the judge there was suspended a largo clock. The broad face of the brass pendulum, nearly a foot in diameter, vibrated to and fro in a solemn measured movement which arrested his ejTe. 1'or a moment ho looked 'listlessly upon tho precision of its oscillations, and tho idea gently occured to him of the kipso of time—ils ceapeless, rapid flow aivarked off so solemnly by tho ticking •of the clock. The train of thought tbus suggested gradually and silently .a&fiorbed his attention. Hi» eyes "were fixed upon the pendulum. lie was insonsible to tho scene passing around him, as he thought of the events occurring all over tho world in tho interval marked by tho vibration now somo are sinking into a watery grave—now tho assassin plunges tho dagger—now cornea tho fiend-like shock of armies—now tho cry of reraorso ascends from tho pillow of tho dying sinner. What multitudes die at each vibration How rapidly the vibrations cut oft* the moments allotted to me! How soon will tho clock Btrikcmy last hour? Where shall 1 then be? In heaven or in hell.
Thus he 6tood, lost in rcverio while that noiseless pendulum preached to his soul in tones such as ho had never heard before. Ho left tho court room, mingled with the thoughtless crowds in Washington street, but tho barbed arrow, of religious conviction had pierced hia heart, and he could not oxtract it. Ho sought his closet. He fell upon his knees,: and in anguish offered the prayer which sincerely offered is never refused:
