Artesian W^l at tedl. •.

efa itdfv'df£ tb J&wpftrjb Jloosier

State has recently visited tho artesian well at Lodi, Parke county, and from •a column articlc, wo condense the fol)0yn^:r|^jl0f ns «h6 ^rf€eri is similar to that* oflftie "Roso frtell at thisj place. It is-ett-uated about one milejiorth of tl'O little town of Lodi, on ifie-ftuldiof WihlJW auuand wj thin, twenty-five j?ards of the east bank of the Wttbaih artd^Erid Oarifil, 4t tbefoot of a large i^illjTerre Haute Lxpress.

This weljt was commenced in 1805, and first'struck a vemo'fblue sulpher arte8i|afi #ater, at 955 foot In 1866, ilio^ellji^a^^ored/to a depth of 1105 fqct, -whore white sulpher water was foijnd, and a8 the well progressed from that point, fifty feet deoper, the water contit\Udnsljfit)creased in quanity, and is now flowing* at the'full capacity of the AVell, at the "b.ottom, which is four at ono half inches in diameter, and from t&e bottom is propelled upwards by a lifting forco of five hundred pounds to .the square inch, as is evinced by its propelling force neutralizing the drill4and heavy weight of the machinery. The volume of water is estimated at ono barrel per second, or 86,4000 barrels per day. The tetnperatureittf^he water is ^70^ degrees, Fahrenhekf, showing that eaHli increases in temperature one degree Fah. for ovory fifty-two feet of descent. The water has been analyzed by distinguished chemists of Cincinnati and JSTew York, who pronounco it ono of the most perfect medical compounds in the world, and *predicts^that it will surpass Blue. Licks and Saratoga as a medicinaragent.

There are twoJ'sections.Tof cast'JroD drive pipe of

tn^fecteach,^which4have

been inserted in the well to insure against its ^washing, extending tojthe solidjjrock some twelve-feet below tho surface, and is fcix inches in diameter, and as stated before, four and a half inches, hence the water does not play Tup above*tho pipe more than two^feet .without being confined. But on being 'confined, does play up a'fountain some Jtwenty-fivo or thirty feet in the air.

By inserting in the main pipe a tube of three inches in diameter, tho^ water flows out iiva stream at tho]top of the dcrric, forty feet, above the'surfacc of tho.'earth.

There has been no",intermission in the flow of water since it first* began but lias 'been flowing ono continuous „8tream ever since. It is a sight well worth going to see, and should the rubbish and debris be removed [from aio mdit, and the grounds made beautiful and inviting, it certainly would be one of the most desirblo resorts that we know of. Wo hear it ^rumored, however, that the company contemplate making some improvements in the

way of erefeting bathjhouses, a hotel and other fixtures necessary to make it'a placo of comfort, pleasure and ronown. I

ThoJenginoors^of the Central* Pacific railroad have reported in favor of locating the l'oute: north of Salt Lake, which, is seventy miles shorter, and -•will cost less,[and [pass through far better country. ""About ten per "cent.'of the Democratic county treasurers in this State, have becomejdefaulters within thejast threo months. The last added .to the roll is tho treasurer ofj Wells county. Poor .. follows! They were once honestlboys butcoppcrheadism has debauched their .moral nature until the eense^of shame have lost their power

The President'4on Saturday nominated Horace Greely as minister to iSusS tria.'JObjection was made and the nomination went over. The Senate need not be in hasto to confirm Mr. Greely, as ho would not accept.:the position, •. and Mr. Johnson,'unless he has lost all his fbrains, must know it. It is onlj one*of Andy's jokes.

Speaker Colfax has received the petition of one hundred and seventy colored men, lately United States soldiers, residing in Kentucky, stating that the State laws deny them the ri§ht to testijy in court that they cannot, therefore, obtain redress for murder and outrage that eolored men have been murdered ia cold blood, and not having the right to testify, the criminals go unpunished and asking Congress to grant them tho right of suffrage.

Nearly forty years ago the'Supreme Court of the United States decided that Ijc tho States had no power under the

Constitution to tax the obligations of the Federal government and that ruling lias been adherod to ever since. ,?

in It is reported that Santa*Anna has 'hot been shot, but is etill in prison. He li'a4 refiised all food jfor thrco days Wand was continually inquiring wbout s] his being Shot, and asking for iv coh-

During the confusion in the House, regarding the presentation of the irnpeachment evidence, it leaked out ^that General Grant had been summon-
