S3S Reduction of tUe State Debt. Gen. Walter Q. jGreeham was in the city yeBtor&ay, preparatory to proceeding to New York to redeem the outstanding two and oro half per cent. Indiana stocks. It is very much to the credit of the Republican administration of this State, that a reduction of our State debt has begun in earnost. From the time of the compromise with our creditors in 1846, to 1860, the Democratic party controled the State, and all that time our debt grew upon our hands. As noon as the Republican party camo into power, i^ was confronted by a formidable rebellion, set on foot by the Southern and governing •wing of the Democrat party, which compelled the creation of a new debt of 62,000,000 for defensive purposes. Considerably more than half of this4 lias been paid over 8400,000 of tho old debt was discharged in I8G6, and the amount of the State debt sinking fund now in the treasury, and to come *n from the taxes of last year, will retire about §1,000,000 more of the two and one half per cents. Next year we shall begin to pay off the five per cents, and

by

1872, tho whole of our

internal improvement debt will be liquidated. It was a disgrace to the Democratic party, that during its long supromacy in this State, it not only failed to reduce tho debt, but creatod new debts to pay interest on tho old, besides swallowing up all the trust funds in tho treasury.—Indiana oournal.

A TEXAS paper'undertakes to give some timlcy advice tO the people of that State concerniug the importance of labor. What it says of jTo.^ss is equally applicable elsewhere through out the South. Tho negroes are by no means behind the whites in this matter of labor. If anything they show a more earnest desire to work thaivtheir white neighbors, though their opportunities and prospects are less favorable. Hundreds of white men who have land are either to ignorant or to:) lazy to make it productive. To them tie following counsel is peculiarly valuable.

Is money scarre We trow not with those who work for it Too many are tr\ ing to sell tape, and too few at work. There was never a time in the history of Texas, when well directed energy in any pursuit, outside of seliig calico and fancy wares, was as likely to reward as now. We have no sympathy with those long-faced loafers who have not done a day's work for years, who come whining about, declaring that tho country is going to •ruin that there is no money in it -that businss is dead and buried, and there is nothing to bo done. One pound of plough handle, repeated daily for, six months, will euro all such "Who id going to develope the resources of th:s mighty Slate? bimll we lay su•piucly on our backs and leave it to the negro, the Yankee, the foreigner? If we do, we deserve to be ruled by them forever. Work is tho natural condition of all and attempts to escape from it have in all ages been the fruitful source of misfortune and crime. 3

Tne pirate RAPHAEL SEMMES, at a recent fair in Memphis spoke of" the Star Spangled Banner at tho mast head of the merchant ship, from which in times gene by, I have so often caused it to descend." This was as noble and chivalric in SEMMES as it would be for a man to boast of having whipped a child or a woman. He can not, it is known to the world, boast of having ever caused tho Star Spangled Banner to descend from any but a peaceful unarmed ship. The first time ho undertook, or rather was forced into, a fight with a vessel of war it was his own flag which was hauled down. And yet the chivalr}' who listened to him applauded his poor attempt at wit and brag. There are rebels who may boast of their gallantry in a bad cause but SEMMES is not one"of thera.

BLACK MAIL.—A prominent and highly respectable citizen of Cincinnati has. lor some months past, been receiving letters threatening him with ao eassinatipn unless ho deposited §3, 000 to the credit of the writer, the details of the negotiations to be carried on through tho personal column of a city paper. The writer of these letters is good enough to assure, the gentleman that ho has been selected to pay S3, 000 because he is able to do it assuring him most solemnly that unless he complies with tho demand ho will bo murdered. All attempts to entrap thei dastardly another of those threatening, letters havo, as yet, proved futile.

Tho Washington Chronicle remarks that the testimony of Sergeant Dye, in theSurratt trial, goes to confirm tho ustico of Mrs. Surratt's sentence, which has been called in question by no less distngnished a personage than General Butler. Tho evidence in the case bears hard on the accused, establishes a chain connecting him with the assassination.

A young man named John Rivers, last week, in Putman county, Georgia, was gathering etrawberries in his father's patch, on his hands and knoes, when a rattle snake sprung and struck him on the neck. A physician was. sent for at once, but before he arrived the young man was dead.

IN Lansing, the other day, a young couple were married in two hours the bridegroom had found and purchased a house and lot by noon they had selected and got home their furniture, and at night the kettle was singing on the stove and the cloth Bpread for supper when the man returned—ho having that day, in addition to getting married, etc., hired out for a year. That pair will euccoed and ought to.
