The Traitor Cliief at liarge.

Our telegraphic columns yesterday announced that. Jefferson Davis, instead of being put to the experience of a turn in Libby Prison, where, in the days of his treason, ho tortured to .death so many men better than himself, has boen suffered to go at largo, without oven tho form of a legal inquiry into his conduct. Tho clause of the Constitution which defines treason against tho country, and tho laws of

Congress which prescribo the proper punishment of treason, are made a dead letter. From all that appoars, tho crime of treason is honceforth as safe to commit in tho United States as peculation is in iNcw York city. This is tho construction which is forced upon tho case by the fact that tho first uso which thobondod traitor proposes to make of his enlargement is to go at onco to a foreign country, beyond tho reach of our laws. It would bo eome satisfaction if wo should find that ho has himself a sufficient comprehension of what is due to his country's laws, to remain beyond their roach, thus making tho only atonement now in his power by a voluntary exile. It might mako a better inheritance for his posterity, if he should loavo behind him this testimony to the criminality of treason.and tho sacredness of law.

As ho leaves tho country with the connivance of his bondsmen, it is plain that they consider the bailment a mero matter of form—a farce—and that thoy have no expectation of being called upon to pay tho hundred thousand dollars, as tho ransom of a traitor. Their desiro to sign tho bond is only for the sake of having their names enrolled for posterity as those who gladly did all in their power to Bocuro his exemption from tho penalty of tlio law. Let them have their reward,

To Mr. Greeley was accorded the proud satisfaction of putting his name at the head of tho list of bondsmen. Ho doubtless looks upon it as the culmination of his long-continuod eiforts in behalf of tho rebellion. It will compensato all his disappointmeat3 in regard to tho payment for tho slaves, tho surrender of tho South to tho rebellion, tho peace negotiations in Canada, the permanent- recognition of tho government at Richmond. Ilo could not do what ho would, but ho has gladly dono what he could. Ho has at loast preserved his consistency to the end. If ho could not compass tho overthrow of law by tho forco of rebels, he ha3 achieved its practical abrogation by tho voluntary act of our own officials. Wo will not rob him of his laurels, nor anticipate tho verdict of posterity as to his merits.

Mr. Davis, as wo must now call him, is to. take a "progress" through tho .North, in tho enjoyment of his free dom, and doubtless under tho escort of his Northern friends, his bondsmen and others. The hand shakings, tho congratulations, tho triumpnant cheers by which ho was surrounded at .Richmond, as he stepped forth from the custody of tho law, are to be repeated, wo suppose, at Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. And the sky overhead shall echo to all nations the proclamation that "Thus it shall be dono to tlio man whom tho United States advance to honor for his treason I"—N.

ing Post.

"All is Kot I-ost."

This is tho heading of "a lengthy editorial in tho Louisville Courier, the organ of tho Kentucky rebels, and during tho war an organ of rebels farther South. It is true that all is not lost, but no thanks to the Courier and -its friends for that. Through their traitorous attempts to destroy the nation, a half million of valuable lives have been lost thousands of millions of treasures havo been lost tho wealth and prosperity of the South have been lost, and her suffering widows and orphans aro mourning husbands and fathers lost—all to gratify the ambition of a heartless pack of rebels and traitors.—Lid. Journal.

A "Washington dispatch says Tho rascality of certain prominent Southerners negotiating for pardons just after the surrender, has just come to light. While these men were working up their pardons in Washington, they wero urging upon Count Montholon and through rebel agents in Paris, on the Emperor, tho project of interference through Mexico with us, and promising that tho leaders in the South would exert themselves to foment anothor rebellion, and that the Emperor could rely on their earnest aid. The parties succeeded in obtaining their pardons.

A Mormon female seminary was recently started in Salt Lake City, which succeeded very well, until tho principal eloped with and inai'ried tho wholo school.

Tho Prsident has appointed George Bancroft, tho historian, Minister to Berlin, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Governor Wright.

Hon. Samuel McKeo of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, will contest the olection of Hon. John Young, (Gro^yback) Congressman elect for the Ninth Kentucky District. =i.r "There, John, that's twico you've come homo and forgotten tho lard." "La! moth or, it was so greasy it slipped my mind."

The contract for building tho new State offices at Indianapolis wasjawarded.to F. D. Allen, Evansville, at §45,289.'

The old lady who dried hor clothes oh the equinoctial lino has gono after the North polo to prop it with.

A Scotchman went to a lawyer for advice, and detailed tho circumstanccs of the case. "Have you told the facts precisely as they occurred?" said tho lawyer. "Oh, ay, sir," rejoined he, "I thought it best to tell you truth you can put lies into it yourself."
