Oar exchanges arc Oiled with accounts of an earthquake, which happened on the 2-ith of April, and extended from Dubuque south to St.
J.ouis and west as far as Lawrence, Kansas. The shock was felt with equal distinctness at Leaven worth, Kansas City, St. Joseph, Lawrence. Dubuque and many other towns, and is perhaps distantly related to the threat earthquake of 1812, which shook tho whole Mississippi valley from center to circumference, and utterly destroyed JL\CW Madrid. We append the following account of the phenomenon, from the St. Joseph
ult.:
Union
of the 25th
1. half-past two o'clock yester-
dayafternoon a low rumbling sound, similar to that produced by a heavily loaded wagon passing over a bridge, was heard, accompanied by a trembling of lloors and rattling of windows. After an interval of four or five seconds the rumbling sound rocurrcd again with greater intensity, and huge brick buildings rocked and reeled as if they were about to come down in an indiscriminate mass. These remarkable phenomena lasted but a few seconds, but ere they terminated almost the entire population of the city had rushed tcrritied from (he counting rooms, work shops, and kitchens into the streets.
At
first everybody seem
ed to bo under the impression that his particular building had suddenly become possessed of an unusual number of devils and was pirouetting by itself but upon seeing his neighbors rushing out under apparent!}" the same conviction. tho idea flashed upon him that an earthquake had playfully shaken us.
It seems almost miraculous that an cntiro city could be shaken as was ours yesterday, and no serious damage be done. The dismantled walls of the old burnt mill were partially thrown -flown, and some piles of lumber in Hell's yard toppled over, but this is about all the tumbling that has come to our knowledge, save an indefinite amount of tumbling down stairs done by the afVrighted inmates oi tottering houses. In tho Union office a broken pane of glass and two or three cracks in the wall remain as mementoes. In Chesnut & Bro s, glassware anu crockery were thrown from the shelves. In Constable's iron house, the stacks of bars resting against the wall played a lively tune. 7 Tho Court of Common Please was in session. udge, attorneys, clients, witnesses, si)
ucige, erilT and attendants rush
ed promiscuously out of tho building, in defiance of all rule of decorum governing such bodies. A jury had just retired to deliberate on a verdict. They tumbled out of windows and doors as if his satanic majesty had stood in their midst with a summons for cach ono of them. in a certain justice's office a jury trial was progressing. Tho foreman became tho foremost man, and charged down the stairs into tho street, pale with terror. Women fainted in every part of the city, and children screamed in the streets halt' demented.
In tho school houses, tho children crowded around their teachers, and implored their protection, and when tho doors were opened 'ran out in the street and scattered in all directions. It was truly an exciting time—such a one as we do not wish to see again.
.Br Cabi.e.—Great Britian, FrrfVice, Prussia, Austria, .Russia, and tho King of Holland are to participate in the Peace Congress in London and it is premised that the decision of the conference will require the abandonment of the claims of Franco to territory on tho northern border, and require tho dismantling of the Fortress of Luxemburg There was an advanco in wheat of 2s. per quarter in the London markets yesterday also a slight advance in cotton, and markets general!}'. :m&.
The richest negro in Philadelphia is Mr. Stephen Smith, a lumber merchant. He owns seventy-five houses in fee simple, and is worth not less than three hundred thousand dollars. Harris Lindsley a bounty broker during the war, is worth two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. There arc five artists and a number of musicians that receive distinguished attention. Philadelphia has twenty-eight thousand colored people, who support seventeen churches.
A meeting of whites and blacks was held at Columbia, S. C., on the 29th ult., at which Governor Orr made a long speech advising the blacks to join neither the lladical nor Democratic parties, but Wait to join tho great National party not }'ct formed. -Resolutions were adopted in favor of frco schools for tho education of all children, and the revision of tho civil and criminal code.
Tho tone of the dispatches by the Atlantic Cable aro decidedly pacific again but in giving the grounds upon which an international congress will agree arid the public peace be preserved. the news gatherers probably assume too much. While it is possiblo that Louis Napoleon would consent to smother his wrath, and give up his designs upon Luxemburg,-it is siot so apparent that Prussia will relinquish its advantage. Germany not onjy entertains no doubt of its right tttibe Duchy, but believes itself capable 'of holding it, and will not soon acquiesce in the dismantling of tho coveted stronghold.—Ind.
Terrible ESali-Room Fight.
At a recent ball in Koseburg, Ore gon, all went on in pcaeo and quietness until Sol. Colver, John Fitsshugh Bob. Forbes, John Ilannon and Abe Crow came hero, it is said to break up tho ball. When the}'entered the ballroom lln\y had a few words, when George Bennett struck Sol. Colver in tho face with a revolver.* ^Beranger then stepped up to them for the pose, it is said, of stopping the when John Fifzhugh drew a derringer and shot him through tho heart, a" which he never spoke. Ash Clayton who was fiddling at the time, then drew a knife and stabbod Sol. Colver in the small of tho back, under the right shoulder. Abe Crow then rushed in and shot Clayton through the thigh, and another ball struck him on the" forehead, the ball not entering the skull, but glancing over it under tho skin and passing out at the back of the head. Crow then drew his knife, and struck Clayton across the head, inflicting a terrible wound. Fitzhugh after shooting Beranger, rushed on toVTom Thompson, when the latter shct him twice. Ilannon then struck Thompson, when the latter shot him in tho stomach, tho ball passing through him. Bob Forbes then rushed' into the fight, when Thompson shot him down also, the ball entering tho right side, ranging back, striking the back
bono and breaking

his back, then glan
cing to the right and goingjlown the hip. After the shooting was all over, Bob Woodruff went into tho melee, when some man struck him over the head with a revolver and laid him out for dead. Cy. Smith also camo in flourishing a revolver, when Fitzhugh, who was thought to be dead, or at least dying, raised himself, and with his bowio knife stabbed Cy. Smith, inflicting1a dangerous wound. Out of tho eleven men who were engaged in the fight, nine lay dead, or mortally wounded ou the ball room floor.

The Tribune's special say a tho Department of Stato to-day received voluminous desp atches from our Ministers in England and France. While thov do not contain as lato advices as are daily brought jby the cable, they represent pretty folly the condition of affairs, and show conclusively that a general European war can scarcely be averted.
The Emperor Napoleon has been engaged for several months making gigantic naval preparations. It is alleged that the feeling is now universal among tho French people for a collision, and it has passed beyond the Em peror's control.

A Paris correspondent of a Western journal furnishes the following James Stephens is living at No. 20 Eomuey street, at Montmartrc, where ho seems to bo quite comfortable, having his wife -anti brother-in-law with him. which does not prevent him from complaining of his poverty. A low days ago one of his countryman, who had not a penny, came to solicit his aid. "I have not a dollar, my lad," replied he, "but come with me, perhaps I may procure some help for you.' On tho road they met a passer by, whom Stephens declared to be an acquaintance of his, and, leaving his helpless companion, ho chatted for an instant with his "friend.''
4iHere,''
said Stephens, returning to tho Irishman, "here are five francs this gentleman has lent me ton it is all I have— let us share." This said, Stephens left his companion. The latter a short time after was near a carriage stand, and to his surprise saw Stephons engage one and get in. Our Irishman considered it odd that a man who had but five francs should engage a carriage at fifty sous an hour, lie seated himself patiently near tho carriage stand, and waited till cither tho car
or Stephens should return. At the end of three hours the carriage returned. Stephens had paid for the three hours. Another fact, still more serious, is that Stephens visits the English embassy in secret. What does he do there

An Iowa tourist in Palestine writes to the Chicago Journal. Much of the country is occupied by the Bedouin Arabs, and for the privilege of visiting tho river Jordan and Dead Sea, their Shiek requires §2 50 from cach person. For this amount he sends a guard of Arabs with you The Bedouins would bo a noble race were it not for their inborn disposition to steal, lie, rob and murder. I slept on a house top among them at Jericho, and while I slept, with throe to guard me, others outside amused themselves by cutting each other's throats, and threo were reported left dead on the field. Upon tho whole I think I should not Pke the Bedouins for neighbors, and think their presence in a community would not bo very agree able.

Tho Hopkinsville (Ky.) Constitution says a lady of Christian county, I\y., recently gave birth to a monster, the lower portions of which are natural in their formation, but the body and head are similar to those of a rattlesnake.- The mother is thrown into convulsions every time she is compelled to give nourishment to tho child. Sho is said to have been attacked by a rattlesnake during her pregnancy, and was greatly frightened, though she escaped without being bitten. At last accounts the child was still alive. Its parents aro among the most respectable people of Christian county.

While this was going on, it chanced that tho son of the planter, a nice, modest fellow, had to claim a forfeit of some of tho girls, but ho was overcome with diffidence. "Go ahead, John," said the planter, "and kiss some of the girls." John hitched from one foot to the other, blushed, and finally blurted out: "1—I—never kissed whito girl, father." The laughter that ensued may be imagined.
