Teaching tbc IHimbto Speak. A correspondent of the Springfield Republican describes an exhibition which recently took place at the drawing r.oom-offtlklrs. ^osiah Quincy, in Boston-* ©Bthe part of the pwpils of Miss Rogers, of Choimford. It is evident from the report, a portion of which we subjoin, that this lady has mot with unexpected and singular success in li£r system, of education "Two of the pupils of Mrs. Rogers were born deaf, one lost his hearing at the age of two years, one three and n-half, cct. Miss Leppett, the young lady from Providence, whose powex*, of articulation and lip reading was tho most striking, became deaf at the age of four, and, in consequence, had almost lost what little speech she had, when her mother undertook to proserve and improve it. Jennie Lippctt is now fifteen, perfectly deaf, and yet able to carry on a conversation with her family almost as rapidly as hearing children do, and to make herself easily understood by strangers whose word she catches by the motion of their lips. She now goes to school with hearing children of her own age, recites in their classes, joins in their plays, and does her full sharo of the talking. In a word she is restored to society, from which her infirmity seemed to banish her completely. ."I never saw anything more interesting than the chat she had with Pascal Green, a lad of eighteen, who lost his hearing at tho age of seven and who has bpen taught to read tho lips by Miss Rogers within tho last eight -months. They sat eight or ten feet apart, talked and laughed about Provi-r„-$?nce, (the home of both) Newport, the ironclads there, the studies of their schools, the pleasures, of vacation, ect.
Ncithcr of them could hear a word, neither of them used a sign or a letter of tho finger alphabet, }'et they read from each other's tips the 'small talk' of young people as fluently as they had read more serious things from the lipsof their teachers and friends. '••The younger pupils of Mrs. Rogers spelled words and sentences, wrote them from dictation, counted the numbers above a hundred, ciphered out little sums on their slates, and went through the whole of the pretty gamut of their school attainments—not hearing a word, nor nsing the sign language or the finger alphabet, but reading everything from the teacher's lips. If the performance of Jennie
Leppett was moro surprising, it was less touching than theirs, and few of the many spectators could keep back their tears as they saw tho artless struggles of these little ones to acquire and exhibit the knowledge which comes so readily to hearing children.
A Lesson of Trust.
Some time ago a boy was discovered In the street, evidently intelligent but sick. A man, who had the feeling of kindness strongly developed, went to ask him what he was doing there. ."Waiting for God to come to me." "What do you mcan?:: said the gentleman, touched by the pathetic tone find answer of tho boy, in whose flushed face he saw the evidence of fever. "God sent for father and mother and little brother," said he, "and took them away to his home up in the sky and mother told mo when she was sick that God would take care of me. I have no home, nobody to give mo anything and so I came out here, and have been looking so long up in the sky for God to come and take care of me, as mother said he would. He will come, won't he? Mother never told me a lie." "Yes, my lad," said the man, overcome with emotion. "He has sent me to take care of you." "You should have seen his eye flash, and tho smile of triumph break over his face as he said— "Mother never told me a lie, sir but you have been so long on tho way."
What a lesson of truth and how this incident shows the effect of never deceiving children with talcs.
A respectable looking lad}7, with a little child, arrived at Louisville, Ky., and stopped at one of the first class hotels. She eat down by the side of another lady at the table, and was recognized as a lady of color. Lady No. 2 waa highly indignant, and re-, ported lady No. 1 to the proprietor of the hotel, who informed the latter that
eho must leave. It was in vain that elie offerod to pay her bills, and comply strictly with the rules of the house it would not do to have a "nigger" lady boarder, and she was turned off. Hdre is the sequel: Both ladies were known to another person in the house, who BaidthatNo. 1 was a half sister to 'No. 2, and thought Mrs. ought not to bono hard upon her sister. The ladies are married, we understand, and -both consider, themselves highly re*Bpectable. They -vere born on the samo plantation, had the same father, but one had a white mother, while the ^mother of the other was unfortunately yellow.
Secretary Seward has issued a circnlar to the Consular agents and Ministers of the United States stationed at ports likely to be visited by General
Sherman's expidition to the Holy Land, commending the General and his party to their consideration, and intimating.that any attention paid him by foreign States will bo gratefully ap^predated by the Government. The ^Secretary of the Navy has given orders to supply the Quaker City, the .vessel in which the party sails, with artillery and flags, to be used in saluting.
Leading rebels of Charleston, S. C., propose to accept the situation, and *nn a ticket for the Legislature composed of whites and blacks, and thus get the negro vote.
It is stated that Hon. Reverdy John,c6on has refused to be associated in the ^prosecution of the suit of the^State of
Georgia for an injunction against the "enforcement of the reconstruction act, ou. the ground that opposers of that $ro the. worst enemies of the: South*
