THE JOURNAE
Hon.- Joseph A. Wright, United States Minister to Berlin is seriously 'ill.
Spodger came across a man the other day who is so conservative that he refuses to take a particular medicine, because it promises to work a radical euro.
If jTour husband smokes, thank God that ho dosn't chew. If he smokes r.nd chews, thank God that ho dosn't drink. If ho docs all throe, thank God that ho won't live long. .British anxiety over the Fenian movements in Ireland has not abated, but continues rather to increase. The Admiralty, recently, sent three ironclads to re land, and the military authorities directed the departure of two regiments of troops.
A delegation of fifty Indians, men women and children, will embark with their wigwams, war and domestic implements. &c\, from 2s ow \ork on the
IOth of March, as a representation o1 tho Northwest, to the Paris Exposition.

year. If
any doubt their word, they aro at liberty to measure tho distance.
"I bequeath," said an Irishman, in his will, '-to my beloved wife, all my property without reserve, and to my oldest son, Patrick, one-half the remainder, and to Dennis, my youngest, the rest. If anything is left it may go to Terrance McCarty."
Nearly two thousand Germans now leave Europe every week for the Uni ted States in the Bremen and Edinburg mail steamers. A company is established at Copenhagen to encourage the emigration of JDanes, Norwegians and Swedes to the United States.— The children of all emigrants are taught the English language as their mother tonguo.
An Unsuccessful search has been -..made in tho oleaginous cavern near Oil Liock, West
virginia,
to find the
body of Temple, tho man said to have been drowned in oil there, and for whose supposed murder a companion has been arrested. The-search, however, resulted in the discovory of another body not yet identified.
It is a singular coincidence that Ma jor General Grant, a Scottish officer in the British army, in 1778 defeated Gen. Lee, in command of the American forces in New Jersey, and was afterward promoted to the rank of Lieu tenant General, and subsequently to that of General, in tho British army. He died "very old," at his scat on Ballendallock, near Elgin, Scotland, in 180G.
BST1 The dog tax is being collected in some of the counties in this dis.tri.ct. Jf we are not mistaken this tax has been decided unconstitutional by Judge Bicknell, in a case tried in the "Washington Circuit Court, and by Jndge Eckels in tho Torre llauto Ju dicial district, in a caso tried in the ... Sullivan Circuit Court.—JVcio
Albany
Jjedgcr. A London paper says that Uie basis of the agreement between France and the United States relative to Mexico is, that certain tracts of land shall be left open to French colonizaUojiwand 'that the arrangements for payment by
France to Mexican bondholders shall remain intact. A Washington dispatch says that it is reported there that John II. Surrat will be offered a pardon, if ho will
niako a full confession of all he knows
of the assassination plot. Those who I are acquainted with him arc of t'hcj opinion that he has not tho stamina to! .v. resist such an offer.
A Western Judge, full of fun and frolic, and withal a widower with five children, was lately bantered by a pretty miss of twenty-five for not taking a wife. The judgo confessed liia remissness, and ended by ottering himself to the young lady who had so handsomely pointed out his shortcomings. She was willing, but there was one—to her serious obstaclo. "Well," said the Judge, "namo it. My profession is to overcomo such obstacles. "Ah Judge," said she, "this is beyond your powers. I havo vowod that if ever I marry a widower he must have ten children." "Ten children! O, that's nothing," said the Judge, "I'll givoyou five now, and my notes on demand, in yearly installments, for the balance."
The recent election of two Republican colored men to tho Massechuset.ts Legislature has been the subj^ufc. of much extra virtuous comment on the part of the Democratic papers. The}' Jiavo unanimously denounced tho act in no measured terms. We hope they "will be equally plain spoken in relation to tho fact that at tho municipal election in Boston on Tuesday, the Democrats of Ward Three nominated a colored man named Brown for the Common Council. Ho was opposed by a white Republican. Tho vote was tie, and a new election has been ordered. Will the Copperhead press rebuko its own friends as well as its opponents?
Somebody says if tho negroes sho'd be permitted to have a controlling vote in any State at the South, "its further degradation would bo impossible, for it would have touched tho bottom of disgrace." Now this is a mistake.— Tho Southern States "touched tho bottom of disgrace" when they permitted themselves to be ruled by traitors. To get into tho hands of loj^al men, of any color, would be a decided deration. It would lift them out of the degradation into which pro-slavery and caste fanaticism has plunged thom. A negro vote ma}7 not bo the best in the world, but it is a great deal better than a rebel vote, as tho loyal whites of the South have learned by terrible experience.—'•••i'ovrt
