A True and Touching" Incident,. 3KT IEO "\7V

A young1 nian an his wife wcro preparing to attend Christmas pArty nt tho house of ft friend, soiv»e miles distant': "Honry,

my

dear husband, don't

drink too much at tho party to-day: you will promise me, won't you said she. putting her hand upon his brow, and raising her eyes to his face with a pleadingsmile. "No, Millie, I will not, 3*oti may trust me," and she wrapped her infant in a soft blanket and they descended. Tho horses were soon

don't yon forget your promise,' whispered the young wife as they passed. lip tho steps. Poor thing! she was the wife of a man who loved to look upon the wino when red. The party passed pleasantly: the time for departure drew Tiear the wifo descended from tho up*jer chamber to join her husband. A pang shot through her boating hcaitl as sho met him, for he was intoxicated he had broken his promise. Silently thoy rode homeward, savo when the drunken man broke into snatches of a! song or unmeaning laughter. But the wife rode on, her babe pressed closely to her grieved heart, "(iivo me the baby, jijillic: I can't trust you with him," lie said, as they approached a dark and swollen stream. After some hesitation she resigned her first born— Jher darling babe, closely wrapped in a great blanket—to his arms. Over the dark waters the noble .steeds safely bore them and when they reached the bank, the mother asked for her ..child. "With much care and tenderness lie placed the bumllc\iti her arms but when sho clasped it to her arms no babe was there! It had slipped from tho blanket and tho drunken father 1 new it not. A wild shriek from the

mother aroused him, and ho turned around iust in time to see tho little rosy face rise one moment above the

dark waters, then sink forever, and that by his own intemperance! The anguish of the mother and remorse of the father are better imagined than described.

General Sheridan's report of the condition of the freedmen in Louisiana should silence those who protend that tho negro needs no other protection than that the planter chooses to extend. Sheridan, who is neither politician nor [Radical, declares that, now that the crops have been gathered, tho Freedmen are, to a great extent, discharged by their employers, on slight pretexts, and, without obtaining any wages, left destitute for the winter.— Outrages on tho freedmen arc common, and Gen. Sheridan affirms cmphatically that "tho trial of a white man for killing a freedman is nothing but a farce." To tho benefits of tho Freed-j man's Bureau lie bears earnest testimony. No honest, intelligent, unprejudiced mind can continue to believe in the justice of Andrew Johnson's policy of giving tho whole South into the hands of Rebels in tho face of innumo-! rable facts like these which Sheridan has furnished.

Ginger is said to bo good to take for a cold, but an old toper, who is somowhat of a literary man, says he prefers the use of the shortest aud most simple—ho uses the gin.
