A

Hardened Criminal.

The

Louisville

5

Democrat of yester-

day nves a briof history of nn individual who has heretofore Bgured bofore the public. Henry Johnson, better known in Indiana as Caldwell Eramens, was arrested in New Albany, two years ago, for burglary, and gave bonds for his appearance, which were forfeited. Afterwards he perpetrated many robberies in different parts of the State. A year since ho garroted a

Mr. Dow in his own house, in Clark county, Ind., and robbed him of near 8700. Arrested and put in Charlestown jail for this, he soon affected his escape, and was not heard of until, a few days ago, a New Albany policeman recognized him sittiug on the criminal bench at the Louisville City Court. He is now in jail in that city on a charge of mule stealing. He is supposed to belong to an organized band of horse thieves, who have been operating extensively in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.

'Bleeding from the Nose. A subscriber to the Scientific American writes that recently, while walking down Broadway, in New York, blood commenced running from his nose. He adds: "I stepped aside and applied my handkerchief, intending to repair to the nearest hotel, when a gentloman accosted me, saying, "Just put a piece of paper in your mouth, chow it rapidly, and it will stop your nose bleeding. Thanking him rather doubtfully, I did as he suggested, and the flow of blood ceased almost immediately. I havo seon the remedy tried since quito frequently, and always •with success." Doubtless any substance would answer as well as paper. Physicians state that placing a small roll of paper or muslin above the front teeth, under the upper lip, and pressing hard on the same, will arrest bleeding at the nose.

MODERN LEXICON.—For the convenience of our readers and the guidance of future compilers of dictionaries, "we present the following definitions:

Johnson—The "policy'' man. Johnsonism—A peculiar policy promulgated by one Andrew Johnson, Esq., that rebel?, after doing all ihey could to destroy a country, shall, having been defeated in the fiold, havo increased power over tho nation, to the detriment and persecution of the loyal men who fought to crush tho rebellion.

Johnsonite—An exponent and apostle of Johnsonism—Reconstructed rebels and Constitutional Democrats are tho most prominent examples of this class.

Copperjohnson—A compound word, derived from the elements Copper and Johnson—a term lately applied to weak-kneed politicians and otherB, who value fall pockets more than correct principles, and suddenly become blatant supporters of Johnsonism.

TOMATO AND ONION PICKLES. To one quart of vinegar, add half a pound of brown sugar, half ounce of cloves and one ounce of cinnamon buds.— Solect small onions boil in the vinegar three minutes, skim them out, when cool, lay them out in a crock, first a layer of onions, and then tomatoes, (tho small plum tomato is the best), and when tho vinegar is cold, pour it over them and set in a cool place.

WHEN we want children in the way, they are always somewhere else and when wo want them somewhere else, they aro always in the way. Many a good kiss has been nipped in the bud by a four year old nuisance bringing a light into the room.

Mrfl. Partington expresses her apprehensions that tho people of the gold regions will bleed to death, as the papers are constantly announcing Hhe opening of other veins.

A humane lady up-country refuses to destroy musquetoes she says they never bite except when they are hungry, and she knows what it is to be in that condition.

.The woman who rushed to a volunteer's arms, has been sent to prison for having government proporty in her possession.

THE following notice recently appeared on the w#st end of a meeting house: "Anybody sticking bills against this church, will be prosecuted according to law or any other nuisances."
