THE JOURNAL

Gen. jVathau Kimball. Tho Democrat, the dirtiest disunion sheet in tho State, commences four different articles yesterday on Gen. Kimball, with the epithet "Hangman Kimball." And why is he thus designated by this rebel organ of Allen county? Simply because he was one of the earliest, most steadfast and devoted defenders of tho Union and the government, against tho southern friends of that soldier hating sheot.

Immediately after tho attack on Fort Sumter, Nathan Kimball, entered the service as a private, was s"oon promotod to tho command of a company, and on the organization of tho 14th Regiment, in June, 1861, was appointed) Colonel of that regiment. With his regiment Col. Kimball was ordored to ^Vest Virginia, whero ho participated in tho battles of Rich Mountain, Cheat Mountain, and tho other brilliant engagements. of that early campaign, the Colonel being in command of a brigado, consisting cf the 14th Indiana, 4tli, 8th and G7th Ohio, 7t.lv Virginia, and 84th Pennsylvania Volunteers.

In tho attack of Stonewall Jackson upon Winchester, Col. Kimball, with his command, checked his advance two miles south of the town and drove him back upon Kernstown. Gen. Shields being wounded, the command of the Division devolved upon Col. Kimball, who at once took charge and prepared for that bloody cncountcr which re-! suited in tho total rout of Stonewall

Jackson, with a greatly superior force.:

For this brilliant victory over ono cf' tho ablest of tho rebel Generals, Col. Kimball was appointed Brigadier General of volunteers, and ordered to report to Gen. Banks for duty. In the battle of Front Royal, Gen. Kimball again commanded, defeating the enemy and pursuing him beyond the Shonandoah, and for many days following was kept in constant motion, watching tho enomy and checking his course. And when Tyler and Carroll were defeated ho mot and covered their retreat, having marchcd for that purpose. 32 miles without rest.

General Kimball's command having "been transferred to the Army of the: Potomac he joined McClellan at Ilar-j rison's Landing, and at once took part in tho advance movements of that army.

At the battle of Antitftara Gen. Kimball and his brigade made a glorious record, taking a full share in the very hottest of that engagement. For four hours they were exposed to an uninterrupted firo of musketry, and of the thirteen hundred and fifty-six men, who went with tho General into tho battle, six hundred and thirty-nine were killed or wounded. But we have

Afterwards transferred to General Grant's department, ho rop&viod to that officer in March, 1SG3, where he was again placed actively at work, and so well acquitted himself that ho Avas placed in command of all tho troops along, and north of the Arfttnsas river, where ho still added to tho distinction he had already won in the

And it is because of this noble service in behalf of tho country, that such rebel sympathizing papors as tho Ft. We ask tho soldiers of Allen county to ponder well this course of tho coppcrhead party, and determine •whether they will permit a gallant comrado in arms to be thus assailed with impunity, and not to forget that the same feeling of hatred manifested against the gallant Kimball by those northorn rebels, is entertained against each and every soldier who made an heroic record in tho war, and who does not now ask their pardon for having helped to savo tho country.— Fort Wayne Democrat.
