Congressional Convention* The Union Congressional Convention for the 8th District, was held at Lafayette last Thursday, when and where our present able, true and steadfast Representative, lion. GODLOYF. S. ORTH was rc-nominated by acclamation amidst a perfcct storm of applause. No man ill the Nation's councils is more deserving of-such a compliment than Mr. ORTH. He has always been true to the principles of the Union party and all who know him feel sure that no powor on earth will ever swervo him one hair's breadth from them. Tho people of tho 8th District arc justly proud of Mr. ORTII and his Congressional rccord and they mean to send him to the 40th Congress by an overwhelming majority. The Convention was addressed by Speaker COI.FAX for two hours,"during the whole of which time tho large audience was perfectly enraptured with his pleasing address and eloquent defense of Congress against tlio attacks of the rebels South and their Northern friends. We never knew a two-hour speceh listened to with more interest througout.
Philadelphia Convention. It is announced by telegraph that the "bread-and-butter brigade" convened, as per arrangement, on Tuesday and organized by tho selection of Senator Doolittlc. as permanent president. Vallanrligham, it appears, from somo cause, was permitted to remain "out in the wet." Wo will give place, probably, to thoir proceedings, in part, in our next iSaue.
..... For the Journal.
''Radical Intolerance in KIple Township." The above is the hoading of an article in last woek's Review, which for its many falsehoods, deserves a passing notice. According to announcement published in the OURNAL, "a gathering of radicals took place in Alamo," for the purposo stated in the call, it was not "held by direction of Orth," but by order of tho Township Central Committee.
The meeting was called to order by the chairman of tho committee, Dr. Ilorncr, which was in strict accordance with tho custom of all political bodies. It is true, that ''that there was present a number of conservative Republicans, but tho number was small, and so was that of the radicals. The conservatives had mustered their strength and were there for tho avowed purposo of controlling the convention, or breaking it up, as can bo abundantly proven. The radicals mado no effort to bring out their strength, thinking the few Johnson men in the township had completely placed themselves outside the pale of the Republican or radical party by their continued abuso and slanderous attacks upon its leaders and its principles.
No one who knows anything at all of decorum, decency, or parliamentary rules, 0^01* dreamed that they would have the impudenco to presumo to meet in convention and deliberate with men whoso principles they pretend to hato more than thoso of tho Democracy.
Scarcely had the chairman taken hisi seat when Mr. J. W. Copner arose, and moved that Mr. J. B. Yaughn, "a very! worthy and respectablo citizen," be appointed President, and put tho question himself, which was quickly and properly "voted down," as the writci' of the Ra'teje article says. The Rcy/m' man also says, "another motion was made to nominate Mr. Yaughn as a to tho Orth convention," ined and thcro was no vote taken on his case, and "tho straw that broke the camel's back" was not on hand, as any ono could see. The writer proceeds next to say that a "pedagogue by the name of Joseph A. Gilkcy arose and denounced Mr. Yaughn in unmeasured terms," which is an unmitigated falsehood, no words passing between us but thoso of courtesy and friendship.
He says that "crimination and recrimination followed this uncalled for attack, and d—d lie passed back and forth." It is true, that ungentlemanlj7 and-unbecoming word was passed, not by Mr. Yaughn, but by Mr. Copner, with... various warlike demonstrations accompanying it, as ho furiously advanced toward tho trembling and fearstricken radical neither was that indecorous word returned, nor the brandishing of fists like flails in raid air. made to still lurther infuriate tho raging Copner. The writer of this article being non-combativo, and, also averse to settling difficulties after the manner of dogs, order was partially restored, when, on Mr. Copner's own motion, five delegates were appointed, ono of whom was-tho veritablo "podagogtie," in spite of the opposition of "Mr. Copner and his friends." W/k
It is proper to state hero that Copner was proposed as a dclegato, but "his friends" thinking ho might raise some disturbance in tho "Orth convention" and thus defeat the '-infamous Orth," concluded they would vote for him to stay at home. Mr. Copner n.ot yet satisfied with the result of tho meeting, drew forth somo resolutions which ho had prepared for tho occasion and proceeded to read them with much vim and spirit. Tho first ono was refreshing to our bravo soldiers, and their widows and orphans tho second very much endorsed a man by tho name of A. Johnson tho third denounced our noble Congress as a pet of villains, knaves and scoundrels. The resolutions were, of course, voted down, and then, as Bowen says, "Mr. an is it re we could not see it that way as Capt. Dan. Keller says, "ho went werbally and alone and as ho went ho said
"in a low toue and tremulous," "I would rather go with the Butternuts and in our heart of hearts we answored—go.
So much, then, for "radical intolerance in Ripley township." Of the fight that occured at tho storo shortly after "he and his friends withdrow," the subscriber sayeth nothing, not being present, ho would not bo a compotent witness.
