THE JOURNAL.

Corn Culture ia June andJaly,

The carc of the corn crop in June and'July should bo the inost prominent part of a farmers basinqss. I heso two months arc when caro 'and alien tion aro needed and a luck of proper cultivation in these months can not be made up at anj other time. But while corn is one -of our most important crops, it does not receive the attention and careful cultivation which it is for the interest of farmers to give it. It is too often put into the ground, run ovor onco or twice with the hoc, and then left to take caro of itself till it is ready to cut. It ought to bo thoroughly cultivated, hoed often and no weeds should be allowed to grow in it. "Wo know farmers who hoe their corn but little, and ai'icr haying send their boys or hired help through their Gelds with scythes to mow down tho weeds, ••which arc then three to four feet. high.

This is a most slovenly and unprofitable method of raising corn. Weeds ought to have no place in tho cornfield, and by proper attention at the right time they could easily bo kept out. The great trouble with many farmers is this, they wait too long after the corn comes up before beginning to hoe. The old saying, A stitch in time saves nine," is eminently true of tho cultivation of corn. JIoo early, before the weeds get well started, and you can easily keep them do.wn

dtu'-

ing tho season. The oftcmcr you hoe corn the better. It ought to be hoed at least twice, and throo times would make it grow much faster. Don't use the old fashioned cultivator, with cast iron teeth, but if you have one of these ancient implements, it will pay you to lay it aside as a relic of days gone by, and purchase a now and improved •Ftcel tooth cultivator or horse hoc.— Thin your corn to four stalks in a hill, Icce]) your lioo sharp, uso it constantly, freely, and you may expect a good crop, and clean fields in time of har'vest.—Rural American.

CJcis. Slicrmaii at College. Tho old hero has been induced to leave his Arm}- Headquarters at St. ".Louis, and has been rusticating for a short time among the Yankees. Visiting Dartmouth College to bo present at the graduation of a young relative, Jie has, as usual, been "called out," and, being a better talker than somo of his brother officers, made quite a pleasant little College speech. JBeing the commencement occasion, ho was reminded of the beginning and early part of his public carecr. lie told tho young men in a gossipping way, of his early army trials in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, and the effect which it had upon the subsequent history of the country. Drawing a lesson from his own experience, and that of others of the great men thrown up from the middle walks of life, he gave the young men somo aclvicc and facts, which it will bo profitable for us all to read) as well as the young men of Dartmouth

All I will say is" that in that war aroso men, ono by one, equal to the emergency, until the war closed and tho nation was saved. And now, young gentlemen, I ask you to look at these men and your futuro. They aro like yourselves. Look at Gen. Grant, a modest, plain, bold, bravo, unchangir.ff gentlemen, with tho simplejdea to .do what is right, and nothing will turn liim aside

from that. A

more mod

est man than George Thomas exists 31 ot on earth. If he were present }Tou could not begin to get him to stand up here, and Phil. Sheridan would infinilely rather, with sabre in hand, ride down the rebel line than enLer this room and stand in my place. General Meade is an accomplished gentleman jnnd scholar, and would fill this place far better than I. Thus you see that during the war men have risen to the highest positions, and stand there now, 'not ono of whom pretends to be above you and this teaches tho simple lestion that with honesty of purpose you -'can master every problem if you go at it with a good purpose and determi nation to do so. There is no doubt of that, in my judgement. It requires of course, a great intellect to become 1'a renowned judge or lawyer, or man of ... hcionco, but for a man of business for *"tho thousand and one employments •that give tone and temper to tho country, any young man with good, honest heart, can master them. For the art of war, in which .renown seems thrust ,.iipon us, all that is required is nerve, vlionor, courage and faith in the flag that wins and wins always. I will r.ot occupy more of your time, for I bavo seen ladies and gentlemen standing here for five long hours, patiently, and you must be tired. I know you will say amen to tho words I have spok'en to these young men, and give .-them a parting and cheerful word as they leavo your little village of Hanover, and start out into that world, .. which is not so dark and full of bad jicoplo as has been represented.—

There area great many good people Jn tho world. You will find them fWherever you go, and you will find people alike wherever you go, for they are all pretty much as God Almighty designed them. Therefbro, young gentlemen, wishing you a happy passage through tho sea of life,

farewell.
