HAVE YOU READ

THIS STORY

slightly modified to suit the

TIME PLACE AND OCCASION!

The shades of night were falling fait, As through a Western City passed A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ioe, A banner with this strange devioe:

"GOOD NEWS 1"

The news was that L. A. FOOTE fc CO. had jnst received a large lot of New Goods, making their stock fuller and more complete than it had ever been, and the best stock in their line eyeria the city of Crawfordsville.

He passed where hangs the sign o'er head "No farther go," a young man said, •'You'll find no better far or wide"— And loud that saxe-horn voice replied:

"GOOD NEWS!"

For tho information of the public, we would say that the sign referred to is that of the "CORNER BOOK STORE," (you can see it from^either Green or Vernon streets,) and the young man who stopped the traveler was John R. Robinson, Jr., who has been in the establishment a year, and being well posted in the business, knew what he was talking about when he told the gentloman with the banner to stop. If you doubt, call and ask him.

And now he stands within the door, Where goods are found from wall to floor And with a smile an-1 wink of eye, He says in accents clear and high,

"I SEE NEW GOODS!"

He saw Bibles, Testamentp, Prayer Books and Hymn Books for all denominations. Albums, Histories, Novels, Music Books, a great stock of miscellaneous Books, all the School Books in use in common Schools, College Text Books, Blank and Memorandum Books, Pictures, all sorts, kind and sizes, Picture Frames, Moldings, Paper of every size and kind, Wall and Window Paper, Window Shades, Cords, Tassels, Envelopes, Slates, Pencils, Ink, Pens, Toys in great variety, and Notions of all kinds. In fact, if you were to ask him he would not be able to enumerate the half that he did see. Nor did he forget to inquire the prices, which, being lower than he had anticipated, and finding many things ho wanted he bought quite a large quantity, which led to tho followingresults

At break of day, towards the brook, IIis way a thirsty farmer took He heard a voice of wild despair Ring clearly through the morning air—-

"NEW GOODS!"

The farmer was astonished far he could so« no one, and so he brought out his dogs for a hunt, and bad the mystery explained as followj:

A traveler, by the faithful hound, All buried in New Goods was found Stiil in his hands, as in a vice, The banner with that strange device:

"GOOD NEWS!"'

The fact is that he had got too many articles for his money and was not able to "tote" them home, and so got into tho above unfortunate predicament.

I fear the youth who bravely bore The Excelsior flag in days of yore, The Corner Book Store" had not found Or he might now be singing round—

"GOOD NEWS!"

The reason we have for that belief is, that If he had found the"forn*r" he would have bought so many entertaining Books that, he would never have undertaken that journey, but have stayed at houie and made a quiet citizen.

Our hero lives, and livos this day. If you'd like to know I'll tell you the way His viind was lull and his heart was warm, And he was only singing amid the storm,

"GOOD NEWS!"

He was rescued from his perilous condition, went on his way rejoicing and gladdened his family and friends with a bountiful supply of Books Stationery, Toys, Notions, Ac., which he had bought at the placn where you get cheap goods and the right change back.

And now with goods in his arms and hands, Goods on his back, in goods ho stands— And costing but a very few fips— The well known sound comes from his lips,-

"GOOD NEWS!"

It may be said that the youth above mentioned was employed to blc-w for FOOTE A CO., but you can be convinced of your mistake if you will call and see the best assorted and most complete stock of goods in our line ever brought to the city, and at prices to suit the times.

The youth forgot to say that we. keep a GENERAL NKW3 DEPOT, where you can find a full supply-' of MAGAZINES and LITERARY PAPERS.

Also have for sale the Wilcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine," which we invite you to call and see. Any goods not on hands promptly ordered.

Thankful for past favors we would respectfully ask you ALL to call. mar 22'66.] L. A. FOOTE & CO.
