TUESDAY AUG. 18
Spicy Letter from Bragg's Army. The Chicago Tribune publishes the following letter taken from a prisoner captured by Eosecrens' troops:
CHATTANOOGA, TENN\, July, 1863. DEAR WILL: Your letter per E. O. C. was received a few days ago. lie starts back again to-morrow, therefore I attempt to'write. It is almost impossible to collect half a dozen ideas this morning, owing to tho noise in cump. I have no doubt you will be very much surprised to hear of Bragg's retreat from Shelbyville, after six months' hard labor preparing to meet the enemy. With one slight skirmish he took two of the strongest positions on our line, to-wit: Haven's and Liberty Gaps in the mountains, which enabled him to flank our position with perfect ease. Bragg was out-general-ed. though that is an cas}T task for a ten year old school boy. It is a perfect outrage to allow such a numskull as Bra fjg to hold the important position that he does. Our loss was, considering the great hasto in which we retreated, comparativel)' nothing, tho' every tent was burnt, so we aro left entirely without. Our retreat to this place was the bitterest pill ever swallowed by this army. A heavy rain was falling all the time, and nothing but mountains. Many of tho boys made the entire march without a shoe. Ten days of suffering did more to demoralize the army than anything else before. We lived on one cracker and one-fourth pound of bacon for fortyeight hours. God forbid my experiencing such another time. The infernal foe kept a continual yell close at our heels. Our brigade was rear guard.— The cavalrv, commanded by the brave and gallant Wharton, sent us word several times to press on, a* the enemy was pressing him hard. Our army was perfectly demoralized tho first word at morning and the last at night •wasd ning Bragg f°1- cowardly flight from Shelbyville they had rather perished on the golden fields of Middle Tennessee, fighting an overwhelming number of tho foe, than make tho retreat we did. Somebody is guilt}'of an unpardonable act, for permitting the enemy to get possession of those Gaps. Gen. Hardee's troops
were guarding them. Our" Generals

have become loo licentious, the} neg-
lec-t their duty. Gen. Hardee and his subalterns were at a pic nic when the Gaps were taken. The ladies, it was generally believed, prepared the dinner and informed Eosecrans of the unguarded position of General Ilardee. Oh, treacherous woman, her smiles and apparent kindness have become a glorious victory for our merciless foe.— Sho was all smiles and kisses—kissing was the rr.ge—in fact, thcro was 110 treasure debarred by but, few of them, but at the p.'imo time a dark plot was
•actress. Middle Tennessee is in the hands of tho enemy, and Vicksburg, British DreSS GOOUS, the
of the hills, has fallen not
by assault of the eager foe, but by starvation. Notwithstanding this, every foot they advance they will find us read}* to meet them. We are further from submitting to the tyrannical rule of Old Abe than ever beforo. God forbid that it shall ever be said that a Tenncsseean quietly submitted to such outrages as thoso perpetrated by the enemy in their late raid to Henderson, Madison, and other counties. If such raids do not arouse every man to im•mediate action, my God! what will?— If insulting a man's mother, aged fatlitor, sister, wife, and lady friend, ain't HOSIERY, :enough to arouse him to action, he is •unworthy the privileges of a civilized people, and should be banished to a "'heathen nation, where liberty and honfor have no abiding place. Will., I r.nJderstand you speak of joining cavalry.

You wroto me you had sent the ..slioes, but I find it a mistake. Please send them. I had to purchase a pair, ^for which I paid S50. 1 bought a coat, f£or which I paid 8185. Just my pants and coat cost mo 8250, but a suit like mine can't be bought now for less than 8400. I bought three pounds of coffee, which cost me 815. Everything else -in proportion.
