Recruiting In New York CityGreat Increase Since the Riot. Notwithstanding the largo [bounties offered to volunteers by the National and State Governments, recruiting had become exceedingly dull when the great riot began. Getting one man in two days was then considered a very good business. Since the suppression of the disturbace, a change has taken place and men are coming forward in considerable numbers, to swell the ranks of the various regiments now being raised. From twelve to twenty is now the average daily number of men enrolled in many regiments.

At the mustering offico thej* report 304 recruits mustered in during the week ending July 29. Two hundred and cightj'-six of these were new men. entftled to the Government bounty of 8100 and the State bounty of $75. The remainder were veterans, whose aggregate bounties were $552. During the week ending Jul}' 22 the mustered recruits numbered 224 and in the previous one 210.

These numbers are not by any means an indication of the recruits enlisted. Many are sent to Staten Island, Biker's Island, New Dorp and other stations, without passing muster, and do not come to the knowledge of the United States Government officials until a whole compan}* or even regiment is organized, when they are all mustered into the servicu together.

There are now about twenty regiments being raised or recruited in this city. These regiments employ 150 recruiting stations, and about 600 reeniitiny officer.®. Each company has usually its own office, where men are enlisted for that company and the regiment has its general station or headquarters.—N. Y. Tribune, 1st.

An Act of Gallant Daring. At the first unsuccessful attack upon Port Hudson, after the Federal troops had been repulsed, the open field separating between them and the rebel batteries, coverod with the dead and dying, was swept by rebel shot and shell, cutting off from the sufferers tho needed succor. Among the fallen was a Union officer—Gen. Paine— grievously hurt. His condition was discovered from our lines, but who sufficiently daring—reckless rather to face the "leaden rain and iron hail," and bring off the fallen hero? it is a fearful errand, and who undertakes it must do so with his life in his hand. And yet must ho who has gallantly led them be left to die? Volunteers arc callod for, an appeal is made to those who dare, to resecue the tho fallen general. It was a perilous •undertaking. How it was made and ?with what result, shall be told by .the Chicago Tribur.t.— Portland Press. "Four black soldiers voluntarily moved out to-his rescue. They readied him raised him tenderly in their arms, and the dangerous return jour ney is commenced. Rifles crack sharplj* from the rebel works, one and another of the brave bearers fall.— Now all are down, and the wounded officer is still exposed. The peril of aiding him has been fearfully demonstrated. But again and ag«iin parties of colored men step forward by four*. The deadly missiles rain around them —again and again their numbern are thinned. Not until fourteen brave black men have offered up their lives was Gen. Paine brought safely within our lines. "And these are our black allies.— These arc tho men into whose hands wc so reluctantly entrusted the implements of war to aid us in crushing this rebellion. Tho whole record of the world's heroism may be searched for an incident to surpass this. It will thine imperishable among the episodes of this contest."

PHILADELPHIA,

Stirring news may also be expected from Mobilo, as movements are now on foot which will undoubtedly result in the capture of that placo. ,.

fW The New Albany Ledger says that "since the establishment of military hospitals in that city, wo are informed by Dr. Fry, that of over seven thousand patients admitted, only one hundred and fiity deaths have occurred, or less than two per cent, for ten months."

Aug. 9ih.—The latest

news from Charleston states that about one thousand sailors wero engaged in erecting shore batteries, bearing on Fort Sumter. It is said that Gen. Gilmore could tako Battery Wagner at any time, but the fire from Fort Sumter makes it untenable. Hence the necessit)T of silencing the Fort, after which Wagner and every other fortification will be occupied. The Charleston papers admit that the fall of that place would be the most disastrous event of the #rar, and judging from the tone of its editorials, have but little hopes of being able to hold out.
