From Washington.

Correspondence N. Y. Commercial Advertiser

WASHINGTON, May 30

The issue of a sensation extra stating that the rebel pickets on the Rappahannock to-day shouted across that we had taken Vicksburg, but that Grant had been killed, causejd some little excitement to-day, but lasted however but a brief time, as the entire story is discredited. The Government gives freely to the public the information it receives from the West, good, bad, or indifferent, and the intimation that bad news is being withheld is untrue.

No further exchange of prisoners will be allowed for the present. The rebel authorities have taken the initia-tive-in this direction, and the War Department has promptly followed it up, all officers on parole being ordered under arrest for imprisonment. It is probable that negotiations will" soon be commenced for a continuance of exchange under the late liberal rule.

Advices from the front to-day state that the rebel army aCBOss the Rappahannock is very active. Their position at the river fords is decidedly offensive at present. Large numbers of trOops are massed in front of them.— The main picket line on the Rappahannock is as strong as ever, but tho troops behind seemed moved elsewhere.

Washington letters say that a balloon reconnoissance shows that the rebels are massing troops near Chdneellorsville, and making preparations as though they expected us to recross a it S at or

jiigKGcneral Burnside has received orders to raiso two regiments of heavy artillery to man the fortifications arourid Cincinnati and. in Kentucky.
