The Bashful Man.

Washington Irving at a party in England, one day, playfully asserted that the love of annexation which the Anglo Saxon race displaj'ed on every occasion, proceeded probably from its maxivaise hante rather than its greediness. As a proof, he cited the story of a bashful friend of his who being as.kc£ to a dinner party, sat 'down'to the table next to the hostess in a great state of excitement, owing to his recluse life. A few glasses of wine mounting to his brain, completed his confusion, and dissipated the small x'emains of his presence of .mind. Casting his ej'es down, he saw on his lap some white Jinen. 'Good heavens,' thought ho, 'that's my shirt protruding at my waistband!'

He immediately commenced to tuck in the offending portion ofhis dress but the more he tucked in, the more there seemed to remain. j' At last ho made a desparate effort, when a sudden crash around hito, and a scream from the company, brought him to his senses.

He had been all the time stuffing the table-cloth into his breeches, and the last move had swept everything cloan off the table!

Thus our bashful friend annexed a table-cloth, thinking it the tail of his own shirt.

The Emperor at a Ball. The Emperor has tried a popular stroke at a soldiers ball in Vichy. Accompan3*ea by several persons attached to the imperial household,*he reached the camp unperceived, and sat down on a bench in the crowd, smoking a cigarrette. He was recognized, however, before danceing began, and hailed with repeated cries of "vive l'emperuer!" After looking at the dancers for sometime, his majesty exchanged a few words with those around him, «nd thon rose to take part in the dance, having selected for his partner a young •workman of Crussct, a neighboring village. It would be impossible to describe the effect produced by this proceeding on all present. The cheers and cries of "vive 1'empereur!" were quite frantic. Among the persons who witnessed this courtous scene was General \Y an intimate friend of the king of Prussia. The General was astonished and could hardly believe his eyes. He will doubtless be able to draw from this incident sorao valuable counsel for King William. When the dance was over, the Emperor, after saying a few kind words to his partner, went towards the refreshment room, and left the camp. At ten o'clock, says one of the Paris newspaper correspondents, "when 1 was strolling quietly home smoking a cigar, a middelaged peasant asked me to allow him to light his pipe, then giving me a friendly slap on the shoulder as if to thank me.Jhe exclaimed: 'Did you see how he danced with Marie Boilen? Dy yc know her?' To be sure, she is my niece.' 'She must bo pleased." 'I believe you, she and her family will remember it for 300 years. Look 3*ou, Charles was king of the nobility, Louis Phillippe of the middel class, but Napoleon is emperor of the peasants. In these three words my interlocutor has given the history of half a century.—Paris correspondence Boston Post.

Proclamation by lire Governor of Minnesota. To the People of Minnesota ..The Sioux Indians upon our Western frontier have risen in large bodies, attacked the settlements, and are murdering men, women and children. The rising appears concerted, and extends from Fort Ripley to the southern boundary of the State.

In this extremity I call upon the militia of the Yalley of the Minnesota, and the counties adjoining the frontier, to take horses, and arm and equip themselves, taking with them subsistence for a few daj-s, and at once report, separately or in squads, to the officer commanding the expedition now moving up the Minnesota river to the scene of hostilities. The officer commanding the expedition has been clothed with full power to provide for all exigencies that ma}r arise.

Measures will be taken to subsist the forces so raised. This outbreak must be suppressed, and in such manner as will forever prevent its repetition.

I earnestly urge upon the settlers on the frontier, that while taking all proper precautions for the safety of tjieir families and homes, they will not give way to any unnecessary alarm. A regiment of infantry, together with 300 cavalry, have been ordered to their defense, and with the voluntary troops now being raised, the frontier settlements will speedily be placed beyond danger. ALEXANDER RAMSEY. .Executive Chamber, St Paul, Aug. 21.

Operations About Helena. Some nine or ten of our best Indiana Regiments are now doing gallant and effective service against the Guerrilla bands of Gen. Hindman in Arkansas, among them, the favorite Eleventh, the Port}' third, (Col. McLean) and the Forty-sixth, (Col. Fitch.) On the first of this nronth an important but perilous expedition, under the command of Bcig. Gren.Hovoy, left Helena to attack a portion of the rebel force which had been sent forward by Hindman to check the advance of the Union troops towards Little Rock. The brigades of Col. Baker and Col. EcLean encountered the enemy near White River but they skedaddled without giving fight. The gallant'Indiana boys after pursuing for three days the flying rebels and suffering an occasional loss from the murderous Guerrillas which infested the roads, and made their march one of the most dangerous in the records of the war, were compelled to return to Helena without an opportunity of proving their invincibility in an open field. Gen. Ho.vey, by his firmness and discresion proved himself worthy to lead such an army of heroes. The highest praises are also, awarded by the men to Cols. Maginnis, Fitch and re. haver no offi-

SINGER CO.'S

ST.lA'Mt.'lKJi JtlJiCMtlJVES,

Well known to be the best for Manufacturing purposes: No. 1, Shuttle Machine, formerly sold at $90,

Reduced to $70.

"2, formerly told at $100, Reduced to $75.

Singer's Letter «f Machine,

13ing

the best Macliino in the world for Family Sewand Light Manufacturing Purposes. Price, [with Ilemmer, and beautifully ortiamentcd,] $50.

We would ask for our Lettor A Machines, the special attention of Vest Makers and Dress Makers, and all those who want Machines for light manufacturing purposes. They embody the principles of the Manufacturing Machines, making, like them, the interlocked stitch, and are destined to be as celebrated for FAMILY SEWING and light manufacturing purposes as our Manufacturing Machines are for manufacturing purposes in general.

FAMILY SEWING MACHINES are valuable in proportion to the number of things they can do well. See what ours can do before making a purchase.

There is no doubt'as to the value of our Machines for manufacturing purposes, but it is only of late that the public began to learn that the essential elements of a machine best adapted to the heaviest work, would also be the elements to be embodied in a Family Machine. It is now well understood that our Letter A Machine is the only Family Machine yet offered to the public which has»t»iplic.ity, rapidity, durability, and certainty of correct action. While as a general thing, the sewing-ma-uliino peoplo are eandid enough to acknowledge that our machines arc unequalled for manufacturing purposes, they aro almost sure to assert, in the same breath, that Singer's Lotter A, or Family Machines, arc not as good astheirsl This is a mere trick of the trade, and we confidently invito those interested in the subject to examine for themselves and see what our Letter A Family Machines, with all the recent improvements, are capable of doing. While they will sew the most delicate material to perfection, as already stated, they arc also adapted to light manufacturing purposes, and this, be it remembered, cannot be said of any of the other Family Machines yet offered to the public.

The Nos. 1 and 2 Machines are of great capacity and application for manufacturing purposes. Our No. 3 Machines aro ospccially adapted to all kinds of light and heavy Leather Work, in Carriage Trimming, Boot and Shoe Making, Harnoss Making, etc., etc. They are of extra size, with an arm long enough to take under it and stitch the largest sized dashes. There is scarcely any part of a Trimmer's stitching that cannot bo better done with them than by hand so, too, the saving of time and labor is very great. The table of these machines is 24 inches long, and theshuttle will hold six times as much thread as the shuttle of those used for tailoring purposes. The large machines work as fast as small ones.

Wchavealways on hand, Hemming Guagcs, Silk Twist, Linen and Cotton Thread on Spools, best Machinc Oil in Bottles, etc., etc.

Wo manufacture our own Needles, .and would warn all persons using our machines not to buy any others. We know that there arc needles sold of the most inferior quality, at higher prices than we charge for the best. The needles sold by UB are manufactured especially for our machines. A bad needle may render the working of the best machine almost useless.

Our customers may rest assured that all our Branch Officcs are furnished with the "genuine article."

In case of small purchases, the money may be sent in postage stamps, or bank notes. ^^Correspondents will please write their names distinctly. It is all important that we should, in each case, know the Post Office, County and State. "SS^uAll persons requiring information about Sewing Machines, their sizes, priecs, working capacities, and thg best methods of purchasing, can obtain it by sending to us, or.any of our Branch Officcs for a copy of

"I. M. Singer & Co.'s C!aze«c." Which is a beautiful Pictorial Paper entirely devoted to the subject.—1 will be sent y?atw.

Ss5**AYe have made the above REDUCTION IN PRICES with the two-fold view of benefiting the public and ourselves. The public have been swindled by spurious machines made in imitation of ours. The metal in them, from the iron casting to the smallest piece, is of poer quality. Their makers have not the means to do their work well.— They are hid away in socretplaces, where it would be impossible to have at their command the proper mechanical appliances. It is only by doing a great business, and having extensive manufacturing establishments, that good machines can be made at moderate prices. The best designed machines, BADLY MADE, are always liable to get out of order, and are sure to cost considerable trouble and money to keep them in repair.

The qualities to be looked for in a achinc, arc: certainty of correct action at all rates of speed, simplicity of construction, great durability, and rapidity of operation, with the least labor. Machineato combine these essential qualities, must be made of the best metal and finished to perfection. TTo have the ways and means, on a grand scale, to do this.

Tho purchasers of Machines, whose daily bread it may concern, will find that those having the above qualities not only work well at rapid as well as slote rates of speed, but last long in the finest possible working order. Our machines, as made by us, will earn more money with less labor than any others, whether in imitation of ours or not. In fact, they arc cheaper than any other Machines as a gift ^©""Local agents wanted.
