Protection against Lightning.
T7 N S O N' S
Copper Tubular
LIGHTNING SOD,
WITH
Spiral flanges,
(PATENTED AUG. 6, 1866.)
Monson's rod is the most eoniplcU' protection against disaster by lightning ever invented. Its vebief. points of superiority ir„: lie Great Cwlueting 1'oic/r.—Copper is the best conductor of electricity known, exempt silver. l! is eight tildes greater tliau iron.
Ill Tubular Spirel Shcpc.—This form gives the greatest strength nt. the smallest possible cost. It is the shape of the ''Fulgarite," the vitrified tube formed ,-bv electricity when striking upon sand, thus indicating the form required. It is better than a solid copper rod four inches in circumference, and its cost is not on£ quarter as much as sucli a rod would be.
It* Great Amount of Stirf'irr.—The surface only of conductor is used by electricity. This rod 1ms a.surface 2)4 times greater than the common iron yed, and being'8 times better .donduciing metal, it Tollows that this rod is equal to twenty iron rods, in- their best condition, while its peculiar shape fedds 50 peTccnt. at least, to this estimate. ." Jt Doct mo li:iHt.—Co\\ CT v/ill not rust, but will aiways retain its power of conduction, while an iron rod'soon rusts, srid then not only losc-s its usefulness, bjit.becomcs absolutely daiigerot!-'. its Perfect joints -—The thanr.firol' connecting th joints i/ such that perfe on*,rtiS'Ito the otiie nu!s,J_hat'in many cases are imperfect nut on, and the bot-t of them Viceomc disconnected by the action of the wind and oxvdation in a short time,.
Its Gold Plated Point.—The point, besides reaching tfpward has four prongs, all of which are sharp and bright, ro as to receive the electrical current from any direction. It is oPsolid copper, and plated with pure-gold.
Its Durability.—This rod will remain a good protection against the disasters of lightning, as long
as
the building endures upon, which it is crectcd. This rod has received the highest marks of commendation whieh science can give. It has been endorsed by Moses G. Farmer, Electrical Engineer, Boston: Dr. Buckman, Prof, of Chemistry in Penn Medical University: and indeed, by over 500 Profeasors in Colleges, and other scientific men, as the best rod ever invented, and possessing all the elements ncccssary to protccf buildings from lightnfng.
It has received the first premiums at the State Fairs pf New York, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Connecticut, and at theNational.Fair, Maryland Institute, American Institute of New York city,Franklin Institute of Philadelphia, Mechanic's Institute Cincinnati, and at very many County, and District Fairs in all sections of the country. It has been successful in everj- contest. Over HOO newspapers and other journals have spoken of it in terms of the highest, praise, and it has boen liberally patronized by the most intelligent people wherever introduced.
The relative conducting power of metals, is as follows: Silver, 100 Copper, 92 Gold, 65 Zinc, 24 Tin, 14 Iron, 12 Lead, Platinum, 7. "Its spiral flanges stiffen the rod, and the rough edges dissipate the electricity, and therein is much better than a smooth surface."—Dr. Boynton. "Tho open flanges running spirally the whole length of therod, enable the fluid to freely traverse bcth surfaces and at the same time pursue the spiral course natural to its movement."— Prof. Bnckman. "When electricity is communicated to a conducting body, it does not distribute itself uniformly through the whole mass, but exclusively upon the surface."—Draper's Chemistry, page 105. "Copper is" little affected by exposure, whereas, iron soon, rusts„ and in a few years ceases to be a conductor."—Benson's Etsays.
A correspondent of the South T!end(Ind.) Register, of a recent date, says the frame dwelling of Nathaniel Frame, in Warren Township, St. Joseph co., was struck by lightning. The rods on it were square iron, in pieces, conncctcd by burrs or nuts the electricity left the rod at the connection, and passed into the house, doing considerable damage. During the same month, tho dwelling of D. I. Bloomer, of Peru Tp., same county, was struck by lightning. Its rods were of fluted iron, connected by burrs or nuts. The lightning left the rod at the first burr, and passing into the house, injured Mr. Bloomer and wife slightly, and damaged the house to the extent of 8100. Mr. Witter's house, in German Tp., St. Joseph co., was similarly protected(?) and being struck, the lightning left the rod at the third nut, and seriously damaged the house. We have numerous instances where buildings covered •with iron rods, have been injured or destroyed by lightning. The School Board of Iveoku':, Iowa, recently decided to take down the iron rods of their Central school house, because of their inefficiency— building having been struck by lightning and fnateria.\'w damaged—and ordered the erection of .,,on''s Spira.1Copper Rod.
