Protection against Lightning.

O N

Copper

Tubular

Ds»- WITH

Munson's rod is the most complete protection against disaster by lightning ever invented. Its chief points of superiority are: lit Great Conducting Power.—Copper is the best conductor of electricity known, except silver. It it eight tiiaoa greater th iron.

Its Tubular Spiral Shape.—This form gives the greatest strength at, the smallest possible cost. It is the shape of the "Fulgarite," the vitrified tube formed by electricity when striking upon sand, thus indicating the form required. It is better

than a solid

corP^ f^r

inches^injireumfe^

ence, and its cost is not one qunrtei ..j iol ^nlber

Its Perfect Joints.—The mannerof connecting the joiuts is "such that perfect continuity is formed from one end to the other. Iron rods are connected by nuts that in many eases are imperfect when first •put on. and the best of them become disconnected by tho action of the wind a«d oxvdation in a short

tlCfU

Gol'l Plated Point.—Tho point, besi-des reaching upward has four prongs, ail of which are shaqi and bright, so as to receive the electrical current from any direction. It is of solid copper, and plated with rure poM.

Durability.—This rod will remain a good protection against the disasters of lightning, as long as the building endures upon which it is erected.

This rod has received the highestmarks of commendation which science ean give. It has been

•1 Boston: Dr. Buckman. Prot.of Chemistry in Penn •i Medical University and indeed, by over 500 Professors in Col-leges, and other scientific men, asthe best rod ever invented, .ind possessing all the elerments necessary to protect buildings from light-

It has received tho first premiums at the State Fairs of New York, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Connecticut, and at the National Fair Maryland Institute, American Institute of New York city,Franklin Institute of Philadelphia. Mechanic's Institute Cincinnati, aud at very many Countv and District Fairs in all sections of the country. It bus been successful in every contest. Over 300 newspapers and other journals have spoken of it in tfcrins of the highest praise, and it has feaen liberally patronized lv tho most intelligent people wherever iutroduetd.

The relative conducting power of metals, is as follows: Silver, 100: Copper, 92 Gold, 05 Zinc, 24: Tin. 14: Iron, 12: Lead, 9 Platinum, 7. '"'Its spiral flanges stiffen the rod, and the rough edges dissipate the electricity, and therein is much better than a smooth surface."—Dr. JJoynton. "The open flanges running spirally the whole length of the rod, enable the fluid to freely traverse ififceth surfaces and at the sitmo time.pursue the spiral course natural to its movement."'— Prof. Buck man. •"When electricity is communicated to a conducting body, it does not distribute itself uniformly through tho whole mass, but exclusively upon the surface."—Draper'* ChmUtri, pa ye 105. "Copper is little affectedly exposure, whereas, iron soon rnst?, and in a few years cea.=es to be a conductor."—Jlenonn's E*s-iys.

A correspondent of the South Bend (Ind.) Register, of a receut date, says the frame dwelling of Nathaniel Frame, in Warren Township,St. Joseph co., was struck by lightning. The rods on it were square iron, in p'ieees. eunncetcd by burrs or nuts the electricity left the rod at the connection, and passed into the house, doing considerable damage, ©uring the same m«nth, the dwelling of I). I. -Bloomer, of Peru Tp., same county, was struck by lightning.' Its rods were.of fluted iron, connected by burrs or nuts. The lightning left the rod at the first burr, and passing into the house, injured Mr.

Bloomer and wife slightly, and damaged the house to the extent of $100. Mr. Wittev's house, in Cerman Tp., St. Joseph co.. wn« similarly protected(?) .and being struck, ^ic lightning left the rod at the third nut, and seriously damaged the house. .have numerous instr.noi where buildings cwercd with iron reds, have been injured or destroyed by ^i-»htning. The School Board of Keoku Iowa, .[recently decided to take down the iron rods of their •'.central school house, because of their inelficienc3" the building having been struck by lightning and materially damaged—and ordered the erection of

Munson's Spiral Copper Bod. We learn that notwithstanding these facts, the iron rod peddlers are busy in certain quarters circulating the most outrageous stories about the copper rod. We caution tho public against them. "When tiie building is protected by Munson's Copper Lightning Hod, five per cent, may be deducted fiom the premium note. No deduction for Iron Rods."—From Rules of Indiana Innirttnce Co. "Iron, on account of it3 low conducting power, ig more easily melted than copper."—Cyclopedia of Useful Arts, pajc 557. "I would not hesitate to commend Munson's Bod to all who wish a perfect protection from accidents by lightning."—Prof, llroicn of the N. W. C.'University.

Orders may be sent by mail or left at our office, No. 1 Blackford's Block, immediately over American Express Co.'s office. Trice twenty-five cents per foot, and two dollars for points. There is a fine field in this business for peddlors who buy at
