Griffin's

Rifleil

makes his rifled wrought iron cannon for the Federal Government: Stand if you please, by this huge lathe.—Ou it or in it, you see fixed a :long tube of iron, with iron bars laid -horizontally along the tube, or like a long, narrow flour barrel, made with staves, around a long flour barrel made without sta\s This tube is to bo the centro of the gun, and will form part of the bore. All of it. indeed, will serve that purpose, except such portion tis is bored away. Well, while we watch a gang of workmen drag one of these "long blazing iron serpents from the mill, where it has had a preparatory roll and squeeze, and with huge tongs and hooks draw it up to tho iron tube we described. One end is fastened to said tube by a stationary screw. A man at hand moves a mysterious lever, and at once the tube revolves, winding the iron bar around it in spiral coils, as swiftly and seemingly as easily as a lady would wind a ribbon round her fingers! The tiling seems incredible, but there it is! A few blowsfasten the end of the bars, a hose lets on a jet of 1

•water, partially cooling tne mass, but •while yet the mass is hissing and changing color from red to black, another bar larger and longer than the first, is dragged forward and fastened. vnnd wound up like its predecessor, and then a third, and then a fourth, and the thing is so far finished.

The next process (this one occupied about fifteen minutes) is to thrust the mass of twisted iron into the furnace, and reheat it, and then put it into a machine which squeezes it endways together with an enormous power.— There may bo some "secession,'' or disposition to secede among the iron bars. Some one or more of them may consider themselves "sovereign" bars and be disposed to go out of the Union which they have entered, for a cominou end and the general weal. So Mr. Griffin puts tho whole mass under a pressure, which squeezes all secession out ofthem and makes the whole coil of seperato bars one solid mass—a glorious union oneandinsepcrable! To perfect this process, he puts, this mass under huge rollers, passing it back and forth till it is reduced to the desired size, and approximates to the desired shape, then being cooled it is carried to the lathe, and then turned outwardly into the form of an orthodox cannon, and transferred into another lathe, where it is turned inwardly into the shape of a rilled one.

FEoyd Wcusi?Ifc."

There is no doubt that Floyd was

wounded at the battle of Carnifex Ferry, as stated by our correspondent, on the authority of rescued prisoners at Cross Lanes. A highly colored rebel description of the affair..,, in the

Lynchburg Republican says: The battle had raged but twenty minutes when our gallant General was very painfull wounded in the right arm, the ball entering near the el'oow and passing out near the wrist, without breaking any'bone. )Vc retired with him a short distap.ee under the liiil, and had the wound dressed by Surgeon leaves, and in ten minutes ho was again moving along our lines, encouraging his.men by his presence and his voice. At a later stage of the fight a Minnie ball tore through the lapel of bis coat and another through the cantel of his saddle. Indeed, it is the wonder of all of us how he escaped death. None but his staff and Surgeon knew he was wounded until the close of the light. He is now suffering much pain.

A IVew l&md

A-pleasant Paris letter in the Courier

dots Etats Unis tells this story: A paper manufacturer has just invented a kind of impermeable paper, suitable for dress goods. Its manner of employment is both simple and ingenious. It, consists in replacing by small frames the hoops upon which are ballooned tho petticoats of our ladies.— 'These new-fangled engines are covered with packing canvas, upon which you have only to glue, as on a common screen, the newly invented paper.

Thanks to this invention, when a lady wants a new dress, her husband has no longer to distress himself with the disbursement of live or six hundred francs, for twenty yards of velvet or thirty of moire antique all he will have to do will bo to buy five or six rolls of twelve sous paper, and send for the glue man. This is as simple as all such grand ideas usually arc.

The father about to marry his daughter will not be obliged a long time beforehand to bother himself about her trousse.au he will limit himself to asking his wife, on the day before the wedding, "What paper shall we glue to our Emily?''

ilMon

Dieu, my love," the mother will

reply, "do whatever you think proper —it seems to me that some twenty-two cent paper, with a pretty border, you know."

Then a man will take a

SEMINARY, July

"Mj family have had in use, for the last eight months, one of Ladd, Wcbstor it Co's Sewing Machines, and they cheerfully bear testimony to its great excellence. It fulfills nil the promises of th» agent concerning it. It is simple, easily worked,

nrrrr r^cts nut of order,

and makes as even and hand-

sonic a stitch as any other machine. Before procuring this machine, my family used Grover it Baker's, and Wheeler it Wilson's, and they would not cschaugc Ladd, Webster it Co's for either.of them.
