TUESDAY, SEPT. 24

The Right Sort of Relig ion. "We want a religion that goes into the family, and keeps the husband from being spiteful when the dinner is late, and keeps the dinner from being late —keeps the wife from fretting when lier husband tracks the newly washed floor with his muddy boots, and makes thehusband mindful of the scraper and fiojr mat keeps the mother patient when the baby ia cross, and keeps the baby pleasant, amuses the children as well as instructs them wins as well as governs projects the honeymoon into the harvestmoon, and makes the happy hours like the eastern tig tree bearing in its blossom at once the beauty ofthe tender blossom and the glory ofthe ripening fruit. "Wo want a religion that bears heavily, not on the "exceeding sinfulness of sin" but on the exceeding rascality of lying and stealing a religion that banishes small measures from the counters, small baskets from the stalls, pebbles from the cotton bag, clay from paper, sand from sugar, chicory from coffee, otter from butter, beet juice from vinegar, alum from bread, strychnine from wine, water from milk-cans, and buttons from the contribution box. The religion that is to save the world will not put the big strawberies on the top. and all the bad ones on the bottom. The religion that is to sanctify the world pays debts. Itdoes not think that forty cents for one hundred cents given ia according to the gospel, though it may bo according to law. it looks •upon a man who has foiled in trade and who coutinucs to live in luxury as a thief. Ii looks upon a man who promises to pay fifty dollars on deinan with or without interest, and who neglects to pay it on demand with or without interest as a liar.—Congregational.

Fining up the Army.

Congress, at its last session, authorized the President to accept the services of volunteers to the amount of five hundred thousand. We print herewith a statement ofthe population of the free States, as shown by the census of 18G0, and tho quota of troops which it is the duty of each state to furnish to fill up tho ranks to the required standard:

The government stands in absolute, pressing need of even' one of these halt' million of men and it ought to have them at this moment in the field or in camp preparing for servic. Every man of the number could beadvantageoush* employed in the service of his country, and they ought to be forthcoming within the next month. If they aro not a heavy responsibility will rest somewhere. That it will not rest upon Indiana is very evident. Il will be seen that our quota is thirty-six thousand five hundred our state has nearly that number now in the field, and in a few days will have forty-two thousand tTOOpS at the disposal of the govern-

ment. We understand that C.:ov.Morton proposes to raise the number to fifty thousand, and will make efforts to that end. We have no doubt they can be raised, and will be if necessary to the salvation of the Union. But we submit that it is impolitic and unjust to make this enormous drain upon the physical rescources of our State until the other States shall have at least approximated to a discharge of their ob -N. From Missouri. ST.Lons, Sept. 21.

Two fights occurred at Blue Mills landing on the 17th inst. The first was between 500 of tho third Iowa -regiment, with one piece of artillery, under Lieut.

Col. Scott, and about 4,000 rebels, and after a desperate struggle of several hours' duration, in which hcott lost 120 killed and wounded and nil his horses, ho retreated slowly for half amile, hauling his cannon by hand, and took position on an emcnanco and awaited an attack, but the enemy did not pursuo.

Hot long after, Col. Smith's command, with four pioces ofartillery, approachcd Blue Mills by another rout, and engaged and routed the rebels as they were about crossing tho river.

JEFFERSON CITY, Sept. 22

Tho following account of the battle at Blue Mills Landing, was derived from authentic sources: Lieut. Col. Seott with 570 men, 3d Iowa regiment and ono field-piccc left Cameron on Monday, tho 15th, in pursuit of rebels who left St. Joseph on the Friday previous. 'Scott arrived at Liberty, Clay county, on ihe morning of the 17tli, and rnovfrom that place at 1 I'. M., and at 3 o'clock fell in with the enemy 4,500 in number, occupying a

position. Our skirmishers received a gall ing firo and slowly retreated to our main body, when tho actiqn beeamo general. Our p:eee was brought to bear on the enemy, and four shots fired •which proved to be destructive. At this time heavy fire was opened on our single gun killing our gunner and wounding two others. On this several tinners, Germans from St. Louis, abandoned the gun carrying off the pi imcr and matches, rendering the piece useless. The action continued an hour when our column was slowly withdrawn to more open grounds, bringing off the wounded and dragging away the gun by hand, all tho hor3es be-

led or badly wounded.

About this time Col. Smith, who left St. Joseph with 3,-J00 men about the same time Sooltdid Cam•eron, TIIKI for the same purpose joined the latter, having pushed forward his mounted men and on receiving a message fro.ni Scott 10 milos back, that he was advancing on tho enemy, but it being night, their men completely exhausted and the enemy reported strongly cntrenchcd at a thicket, -impassible except by a narrow road, a further attack was postponed until morning.

Eariy the following day an advance was made .by the'combined forces, but on arriving at Blue Mills Landing they found the enemy had crossed the rivorbefore daylight, taking the road to Lexington.
