THE JOURNAL.

jPEMSYLTAVU AUTO WfDIASA. Despite exertions will be made during the next two weeks to carry Pennsylvania and'Indiana againsfethe Re--publieans. Money will not bo spared for this purpose, nor the usual appliances of

fraud.

Our fxiends there should

not dream over an easy victory in October. They must bo oil the alert, intermitting no honorable effort from this time onward. True, the greater strikes are dependent upon Jfoveraber, and in both the States named our opponents will doubtless be hopelessty divided then, whatever the result in October. Yet wo cannot afford to postpone the redemption of the local governments of these States from Democratic hands. A United States Sen.itor, in each, depends on the coming election, and the retiring Democrats, BIOLER and FITCH, should give place to Republicans.— Thirty-six Representatives in the lower branch of Congress are also now to be ehosen in these two States. Consequently, admitting both Pennsylvania and Indiana to be sure for Lincoln in any oveiit, there quite enough involved in the elections of the 9th of October to excite the most lively interest and the most earnest effort.

The two Democratic wings are united, in both cases, for the October struggle. Their co-operation will not be entirely cordial. The Breckinridge men well understand that all the glo:ry of beating the Republicans, if by any means that event should happen, will be claimed for the benefit of Douglas. -And their wing of the party is taunted by the Douglasites with having voted directly for the Republican candidates in Maine. The Democratic vote will be lessened through this lack of harmony, and through this mutual jealousy and denunciation. Yet the bulk of both factions will probably sustain the State tickets, which were nominated, in both instances, before the Charleston-Baltimore split, What may be the effect of the begging appeals made to the Bell-Everett men to give the Democracy "a lift," we will not undertake to say! As they have no ticket of their own, in either State, they will probably vote, if at all, according to their natural proclivities.

The prospects certainly are that, with unrelaxing vigilance and activity, the Republicans will-carry both Pennsylvania and Indiana, two weeks from next Tuesday. Every indication is much more favorable than four years ago, when, with all the frauds employed against us, the Democracy barely 'escaped defeat. A change of two or three thousand votes, in either State, would have reversed the result. A great revolution has in fact since taken place, and we look for a Republican majority (in October) of 10,000 in Indiana, and of not less than 25,000 in Pennsv 1 vania.—Cincinnati Gas.

Remember.

That I-Iendricks, in 1852, denounced the Homestead Bill because it gave homes to the poor without price.

That he voted all the time to give .land to the rich railroad corporations without price.

That he insisted on the increase in the price of every other section of the public lands to §2,50 per acre.

That he carried on the system of taxing the clerks in his land office, to raise a corruption fund.

That he assisted in raising money to •pass the Lecompton swindle. That he took part in raising money to aid the great Pennsylvania election frauds.

That he, with the rest of the Indiana Club," in Washington, endorsed the Lecompton fraud.

That he is now defending the administration ofGov. "Willard, which reappointed Jacob Merkle, a defaulter to 'the amount of §110,000, to the very office in which he had committed the defalcation, and dismissed all suits to recover the stolen money.

That he charged Lincoln with voting against supplies for our army iu Mexico when he knew it was false, and knew that Douglas had publicly contradicted the charge.

That he supported the Kansas bill, that prolific parent of evil and agitation, and when the people repudiated him for it, he got a fat office from the President by way of rebuke to the people.

The people of Indiana should keep these facts in mind, and form their opinion of the course to take in the coming election after a fair consideration of the facts.:

The Result in Maine.

I The result of the Maine State eloction 60 far as ascertained—320 towns being reported—is as follows: Washburne (Rop.) for Governor, 61,543 Smart (Dem.) 44,834 Washburne's majority in these towns, about three fourths of the State, 16,609. Morill's majority last year was 11.813. Again of 5,000 votes has been made this year, and the portion of the State to hear from will

add

to it about 1,000 votes more.

•^"Somc of the Douglas organs are trying to set the neck of their broken hopes by saying that Washburnes majority is not much over half of what Fremont's was and that Republicanism is weaker than it was four years ago.— Thev remember exceedingly well to forget to say that Fremont's big majority, 28,000, was over Buchanan alone, hot counting Fillmore's vote, while Washburne beats all parties now over 16,000, and 5,000 more than Morrill beat Smart last year.

The following are the Congressmen elected, with the majorities: 1 John N. Goodwin by 1,667 over Thomas M. Hayers 2. ChaHes W. Walton by 3,000: over Calvin Record 3. Samuel C. Fessenden by 900, over Alfred W. Johnson 4. Anson P. Morill by 5,000, over B. A.

G.

Fuller

5. John H. Rice by 2,500 over S. H. Blake .. Frederick A. Pike by 1,300, over Bion Bradbury.—Ind.
