BBF™ We observo that Spencer county, ^.frhose lands and improvement?" valued 4i "one million three"- hundred and fifty-fbar thousand dollars, and thf personal prop•*erty at one million ono: hundred and twen-»ty-one thousand dollars, and whose tax is 'i*bont thirty-one thousand dollars, has a -(delinquent list of mote than ten thousand dollars, being one-)hird of the whole amount of tax.1 As the amount of those ^returned are for very small sums, the inference is that nearly one half the persons taxed suffer the penalties of delinquency, •which amount on small sums to near 100 percent. In looking over long delinqneLt li sts in other counties, we observe the sums due seldom cxceed (en dollars— and they are nearly all for taxes on forty and eighty acre tracts, or less quantities.
It is evident from these facts, it must bo the poor who suffer from this infernal system of collection.—Evansville Jovr.
I KSTIXCT OF A SIMALS.—Enoch Lewis has written for the "Friend's Review," Philadelphia, a fine article on the-instinct of animals. The deer, he says, instinctly avoids the dog. Dog? and wolves are varieties of the same species. And the care which the shepherd-dog takes of the sheep, not only abstaining from them himself, but protecting them from all attack, is astriking instance of the triumph of education over the native instincts and tendencies of the canine race.
S FEXCER OUNTY.—By returii3 made to the Auditor, and by estimate upon basis otherwise obtained, it appears that the value of the agricultural products of the county, for the year 1855, were about 8750,000,—an amount greally exceeding our ideas of its productiveness. Three-fourtli of this ought to be sufficient for home consumption, leaving nearly a quarter of a million for exportation.—EvanuiUe
Jour
S HELTER.—The past cold weather, and the consequent suffering of unhousod ani*nals, should admonish every farmer to go about it, and provide the means for stabling
all
his domestic animals. Now,
while the snow is on the ground, get ont logs, take them to the saw mill, have them sawed, and build sheds and stables.
It is true economy, and no man ha3 the right to doom the unfortunate dumb-brute which acknowledge him as their owner, to the "peltings of the potiless storm," while ho sits by the stove, or betakes himself to his comfortable bed, piled high with soft funnels, and perhaps a hot brick to his feet. We had as soon have a fit of ngue ourselves, as to see a poor, half-starved cow backed up in a fence corner, shivering in the sleet and suow—and any man who permits his cattle to suffer this wny, deserves to changfe places with them. Them ie our sentiments.—Tnd.

The Pajer Plant.
It will bo remembered that a itrs. Beanraont, of Grant County, Wis., claims to have discovered a plant that yield® two fibrous products—one resembles cotton and the other flax—that are particularly well adaptee to the use of paper makers. The Buffalo Daily Express says that it has gi ven this matter some attention, having submitted specimens of tho flax of the paper, plant to the inspections and opinions o! practical and experienced paper manufacturers.
There is no humbt:g, but much money in this discovery. The plant grows readily, is easy of culture, and yields of the flax abundantly, say, from three to five tons to the acre. The product ready for the mill is worth at least $100 per ton. There is already a field of this plant in procuftb ol culture in Wisconsin, from which wa received our samples.
Justice to Gen. Scott.
Congress did a noble act on Monday, in passing a bill for the relief of the gallant Scott, who had been cheated out of the r© cuniary benifits which tho Lieut. Generalship was intended to give him, by the caviling and hare-splittings of Jeff. Davis and Attorney General Cushiny. The bill gives him about twenty thousand dollars, a sum which every true Lo.irt in the country will pray that the war scarred veteran may live long to enjoy.
A critic, malignant onough to
tell tho truth,.says that the most awbani thing in nature is a woman trying to run. They can't do it. They are not a running iustitutio'-i, except with their tongnes. If there are two arrangements in tho world, that wore nevermade for fleetness, on .th3 pedal, they aro women and ducks.
