Preservation of PrtrtpiiBS' Pumpkins are vaiftfafrio' a's food for cattle, fiogs, fec, and are peculiarly gratoful to milch cows in "Winter season bnt the great difficulty is to prevent the rot attacking them. Withotit frrtimttmg to hare settled the question, we venture the following suggestions: Before your pumpkins have been frost-bitten, haul them to an open shed or barn floor keep them in a^ dry, cool place until there is danger of their being frozen, wben either cover them thoroughly with straw, or, what would be perhaps safer, remove them to a well ventilated cellar, and keep tliem through the very eold weather. They should be placed upon boards or shelves, and examined from time to time, and those that have become infected should be instantly made use of.— If these instructions should meet the eye of an experienced farmer, we should be obliged to him to communicate to us his plan of keeping pumpkins through the winter. It is a shame that farmers are not more willing to communicate knowledge which they have learned often by dear bought experience.

HOGS.—The Cincinnati Gazette, reviewing the hog market, and speculating on pork prospects, says:

Thoso who believe that the crop of hogs will be as large as last season, are more nu merous than those who anticipate a dcfici ency. There is now no foreign demand and it i« generally conceded, we believe that the export to Europe for the ensuing year wflT fall considerably short, as compared with the season just closed. These viows are of course against high price, and Being apparently well founded, it will be difficult to drive dealers entertaining them from there position. Those who have hogs to sell, will, therefore, perceive that it will not be safe to mako calculations upon realizing $6. on per 100 lps. net. For the one dealer who would at this time be wil ling to transact a regular business at 86 there are ten who consider that it would be unsafe to pay over an average of 85. The tendency of prices is now towards this figure. Some days ago sales were made at 86 37-|, while yesterday the market was dull at 86, To check this downward tendency will require a very decided reaction ia the provwron' market, which at this time does not seem probable.

OF

PROTECTION? ot TREES FROM MICE—.The way I freed my orchard for years past, (says J. H. Corning in il»e Country Gentleman^ is this: the fall, say the last of October, I dig away all the grasB and roots from the tree, making a circle about two feet in diameter. This will leave a small space of two inches in depth or more, which I fill up with a-half bushel of cold- ashes, or, if the&e cannot be had, some coarse gravel I think the ashes the best, as they have a good effect on tho tree. I have pursued this plan' for yetws and never lost a tree, although I have Had trees set by the side of fences where they are bhe most like ly to be attacked. I would- say, be crane ful and bring the ashes well' up aroun the roots of the tree, leaving no place where the loaves can lodge. Mr Mouse is a gentleman who likes a good bed as well as a good dinner

Hoas.—The Burlington (Iowa) Gazette says We learn from those who have taken the pains to inform [themselves on the subject, that the hog crop of this State will be fully equal, if not larger, than it was last year. We are inclined to the belief that tho stok of hogs wi 11 be much larger than ayn previous year, from the fact that a greater quantity of land is now under cultivation, and for the past three years the corn crnp has been good. We know that there will be a large increase in the counties West of us. As regards prices, we cannot Bay at what figure the season will open.

HAM.-—A good way of keepiug bacon all tho summer is to take it as soon as brought in from the smokehouse, cut it up in slices and fry till done about half as much as yon would for the table then pack tightly in tho lard that fries out of it, but if that is not sufficient, lard must be melted and poured on sufficient to cover it, else it will mould. This is a very convenient and safe mode of prserving ham much superior to packing in lard without first frying. E. E.—Country Gent, Oct, 30.

FOR BOILIXO A J.M.—

After having soaked, thoroughly cleaned, and trimmed the bam, put over it a little tweet clean hay, and tie it up in a thin cloth place it in a ham kettle, a brazing pan, or any other vessel as nearly of the size as can be, and cover it with two parts of cold water, and one of wright white wine, (we think the reader will perhaps find eider a good substitute for this )add when it boils, and baa bees skimmed four or five carrots, two or three onions, a large bunch of savory hurbs, and the smallest bit of garlic.— Let the whole simmer gently, from four to five hours, or longer, if the ham be very large. Whelk perfectly teader, lift it out' take off the rind, audi sprrak)* over it 6ome fii'ne crumbs, or some- raspings of bread, mixed with a little finely minced parcely.

ery of wine, as given on the authority of an ancient MS. by Bir John Malcolm, may be thus briefly told: The Persian Empe ror, who founded Persepolis, being ex tremely fond of grapes, put some in jars to preserve them tasting them while fermenting, he found them so bad that he put them back, and marked "poison" on the jars. His favorite mistress, from some cause, weary of life, drank the liquor, which (fermentation having been at an end) was so pleasant as to reconcile her to life, instead of poisoning her. The king found out what had taken place—and thus wine was discovered.

HAVING

JUST CONCLUDED A NEGOTI-

ation with the Patentee for the sale of N. T. COFFIN'S World Renowned Chisel-Tooth Mill-Saw, Gnmmer A Hanging AparatiSfl, We would respectfully call the attention of every Sawyer and Mill-Owner in the county to the superior advantages of this improvement over anything of the kind ever invented. 1st. This is the only practical improvement erer made in the Mill-Saw, forming a perfect rule for the Sawyer to be governed by, and is kept in order with much less difficulty than the old plan. 2d. These Saws are warranted to cut from one fourth to one-third more Lumber per day than any other Saw now in use, while at the same time they require much less power. Practical demonstrations of these Saws may be had by calling at Mr. A. P. Mann's Steam Mill, 6 miles south, on the Railroad, where one of them is now running, and something of their value may be learned by enquiring of Mr. Mann what he would take and exchange this superb improvement for the oldfashioned Saw.

We are also selling the celebrated PATENT CUT SAW, warranted to give universal satisfaction or no sale. Being confident that these Saws will altogether supercede the original kind, we offer our entire stock ofthe old-fashioned Saws both Gut and Mill, (embracing Hoe & Co.'s, Lee & Levitt's, and Rowland's) for CASH, AT COST and transportation. All who would avail themselves of a great bargain and a fine improvement, remember the place. No. 7 & 8, Commercial Block, Crawfordsville, Ind.
