Reverend Blackguards.

ThefPaoli Eagle, one of the papers John I»ettit selected over the Courier, to do the Administration printing, calls the Rev. 13. F. Crary a Reverend Blackguard, and a vindictive and nripririciplcd scamp. The wholesale deipriciation of the clergy, started by John Robinson, and others at the Democratic State Convention, and followed up faithfully bp the press of the 'iactionists' throughout the State, are having just the contrary effect from what they were intended. It was supposed that by this kind of abuse, the clergy of the .State would be whipped into silence on the subject,.pf temperance, and that their flocks would follow the lead of Robinson & Co., on the whiskey platform, as sheep follow after a bell-weather into a slaughter-house. Instead of silencing the mouths of the clergy, they have been goaded on to a more faithful performance of their duty, and fearlessly pieachod "temperance" as well as righteousness and a judgment. This is not confined to the Methodist clergy, but may be said of all the clergy of all evangelical denominations. Rev. (J-. M. Boyd ol th.: ^Idhc.disl rhm'eh of this city, eastern charge, told his congregation last Sabbath evening, (lint he would not give a cup of -cold water for ihe religion of any mail who, in this late day and age of the world, would suffer his party politics to ovenide his obligations to vote for temperance and freedom. Rev. Marshall also, on Sabbath evening, exhorled his hearers to be sjovcrned by moral and religious sentiments, as well as political, when they approached the sacred ballot box. The moral as well as the religious sentiment of tho people is opposed to slavery and whiskey—how then can Robinson's platform expect to succeed? Lafayette (J)cm.) Courier.

SIXON.AJt STORM.—A. gentleman, who arrived in this city from Chiilicothe on Friday evening, informs us thiit as the stage was passing from Ureenfieki to Hillsborough, in the neigh!

Arrangements were made to pay for tho iron on the road between Tcrre Haute and Vinrennes, and the road will be completed between tlie.se two points by the first of November. The grading and bridging between this place and lei re Haute is to be prosecuted with the least jMissible delay, so that the road may be ready for the Iron which is to bo purchased early next spring. The Board are pushing this great work with vigor and energy, and we may expect that the road will be entirely completed by the first of-June next, fioiii KvansviHe liiro' to this place.—Ilockcitlc Republican.

SHOOTING AI-TAIR.—Some difficulty having occurred between a party of men, yesterday, on the line of the Evansville and ('rawfordsville Uailroad, a few miles below town, one man drew a pi.stol, loaded with buck-shot and fired promiscuously at the crowd. The shot took effect on three persons. One, a brother of the man who shot, was severely wounded, and it is thought will not recover. The other two were but slightly wounded, one in the arm and the back of the head. Wo were not aide to learn the origin of the difiidultv or the names of any of th" parties engaged in it.— Prairie it}/.

Young America.

In his lately published volume of lectures on the 'Moral aspect of City Life,' iiev. E. II. Chapin says "There are young men whose whole conception of enjoyment is concentrated in the word 'Fast'—who grow fast, live fast, go fast on the track to destruction, with their own folly for a locomotive, and champagne and brandy for the steam power converting themselves into a liquor cask, propping up door posts, banging over railings, and startling the car of night with rickety melody and drunken war whoops. There are others, half fop and half ruffian, who divide their time between the favorite racer and the pet pugilist, and whose idea of a millenium probably would be that of a protracted Fourth of July."

The wedded pair, in the gladness of their blended existence forgot jiot the Printer, who would publish to the world the consummation of their sweetly cherished hopes.

Most heartily were the delicious sweetmeats enjoyed. May the light of impure and ever brightening star illumine their pathway through life, and light thein to the joys of an eternal home on high.
