In order to adapt it more dosely to the wants of the general public. and to make it more than ever before the medium of readable and tnislworihy information, the publishers of Apyleton's Popular Science Monthly iinuirate with this number several marked changes in the magazine which wiU commend themselves to all classes of readers, in the first place tlie price is lowered to twenty-five cents, which puts the publication within the reach of every one who caiea to keep up with the rapid march of discovery and the more important applications of new facts in the nrts and industries. In the next place, the topics dicussed are to be given a broader range, thus enlarging the scope of the magazine as a vehicle of useful and entertaining knowledge, and extending its appeal to a wider circle of reader^.
Art Calendar.
One of the handsomest calendars that has appeared for the new year represents children playing on the broad beach of one of our Atlantic coast resorts. The youngest, a little tot, is defying the approaching lide of the ocean, and in a spirit of bravado calls out to his companions who are eagerly watching him, '"Who's Afraid?"

Squarred Accounts.
LAST
week Miss Grace Johnson, deputy treasurer, went to the Capital to make the county's settlement with the state. The amount turned over was $80,0 :0, a goodly lump of which will be 1 .rued back to us when the apportionment for schools is made.
Diphtheria.
CONSIDERABLE
diphtheria is
developing in the county. There are several cases in this city. I From Walnut township also comes reports of its ravages. It is to be hoped that the scourge may be kept within bounds.
MADE A FORTUNE.
In Speculation on a Small Sum Saveil From Business Failure. Less than a year ago John K. Bucker was conducting a hardware store. He was considered a fairly prosperous country storekeeper, and his holdings, his acquaintances say, probably footed up $9,000. Last winter, however, he became Involved, and about the first of January the Bank of Eplirata, which held judgment against him, closed him out at Sheriff's sale. Ilis downfall, neighbors said, was due to his having tried his luck on the grain market. Be that as it may, his liabilities included bills in favor of (inns in Pliladelpha, Lebanon, Lancaster and Heading. Some of the concerns made efforts to realize when the Sheriffs sale took place, but the judgments of the bank were barely covered, and the firms believed that their loss was absolute.
When the crash came Mr. Bm.ker disappeared from his home. Ills creditors knew nothing of his whereabouts, aiu1 if his wife and family did they said nothing. lie had decided to net, it was afterward learned, and when he saw the inevitable he collected about $T0l) and went to Philadelphia and was lose sight off.
That $500 was Backer's salvation. He started to deal stocks, and when American Tobacco made its hrst big jump lie was fortunate in having almost all. his little fortune- placed on that stock, and when the jump came lie sold out at a nice, fat profit. lie continued to nlace small amounts, and again fortune smiled upon him, for when the great Sugar rise came it found Backer's money backing it. He bought, placing his all on Sugar at "M"-. and held on until it reached 170'.L., when he closed out. Shortly after he made his lucky strike a member of a large Market street firm was surprised to deceive a call from him. He stated that he wished to pay his old bill and told of his fortunate deals on the market. In similar manner he paid all his creditors in Philadelphia. Heading. Lebanon and Lancaster. Just what his fortune may be cannot be learned, but his Market street friend avers that he has shown a certified check for $25,000 on one occasion and .$15,(iii on another, that the amount realized is over Sioo.noo.
Mr. Hueker Is not the kind of a man who would lie looked upon as a plunder, 1 mt is said to be very careful ai:*i reticent.- IM'.einhold (Penn.) Spe. !S'ef York Journal.
Two Sides.
A well known New Yorker who has iust returned from Europe tells the following story: "I was dining with an English friend in a Paris cafe. A young Austrian. whom I had met In my travels lpproached the table, and a short conversation followed between him and myself in Oerman. He soon excused himself and left the place. Then my English friend spoke up: 'Awfully sorry for that young chap, don't you know.' 'Why?' I asked. 'Because he couldn't speak English.' 'That's very odd,' I remarked, 'for he said to jne just before he left that it was a pity that you couldn't speak anything but English.'"
