TiiE investigations of the relatious existing iu this state between employes and their corporate employers, as made by Rev. G. L. McXutt are both interesting and instructive. Mr. MeXutt sought employment as a common laborer iu mills and factories in order that he might gaiu knowledge at first hand from the standpoint of the workingman. His work has been productive in the extreme of information on this question. He found that the law requiring the payment of wages weekly was being violated on the most shallow of pretexts, thus entailing much inconvenience, sufferiug and loss to the working man whose necessities were great, simply that the corporation might retain the use of money rightfully belonging to him. Where a large number of men were employed the aggregate of the saving to the employer was thus quite large. Yet it is simply robbing the workman of money which is his due. It is time for the labor commissioners to investigate the matter and see that justice is done. That is what they are for. They should see that the man who works gets what he has earned when he has earned it. if there be virtue in the law on the question, ilr. McXutt deserves the gratitude of every wage earner in Indiana for the earnest effort he has made to help them, and for the sacrifice he has

Miide in a personal way, to accomplish this.

Tue tin plate octopus in one of the most thriving of the blood suckers, according to the testimony of manufacturer Griffiths before the Interstate Commission. The poor capitalist are making a profit of 100 per cent, aud yet he thinks protection is vitally necessary to the tin plate industry The capital of the company was inflated from §12.000,000 to 850,000,000 and the prices were immediately doubled. The lesson is so plain that that the wayfaring man need make no blunder in his conclusions.

also has its disadvantages. That it will sometime lie dug is beyond question. The expediency of building it now leaves room for discussion.

THE taking of the census will be a task of no small degree. Some 50,000 enumerators will be employed and several thousand persons in other capacities will be required for the completion of the work. The nation has certainly become a mighty people and ond one of which every American should be proud.

WHEN .ve hear the Boer's version of the story of military operations in South Africa, it may have a somewhat different sound from that given to the world by the British. It is not altogether unnatural that the latter should put the liest foot foremost.

SENATOR MASON is getting himself on record as a foe to adulterated foods. Worse things might be charged against a statesman than that.

SOME very active liars abroad iu South Africa if sent out is au indication.

must be the .news

OF all the idiotic and mendacious assertions that men of small caiiber and less character have had theef frontry to circulate for political reasons, perhaps few have been more pitiably weak iu their falsity, and painfull i\.xiiisli and unpatriotic than the one recently given currency to the effect that had not Aguiualdo received assurance that he would be given the support of a considerable portion of the United States Senate, ii« would never have engaged in "reliellion.' The author of such a silly lie should be crowned with asses ears and every

John Donkey that echoes his bray should mast certainly be "shot at sundown" and if that fails to effect a cure, he should be given the reglation "hundred lashes on the bare back," and yet there are men actively engaged in the occupation of public eulightenment who expect people to believe such statements. They proclaim their own wisdom aud viitue and patriotism aud political acumen '•even from the housetops and call upon the Lord to humble the eae•mies of their country, aud they see an enemy iu every man who happens to have an opinion differing from their's. A man who would make such a charge against a portion of the Senate of the United States would be unfit to run at large, were it not for the fact that so soon as he gives utterance to such seutiments the public knows he is a fool and a liar aud so writes him in the catalogue of public opinion.

IT is rumored that "unexpected op position" to currency reform has developed in both the House and Senate, emanating from "sound money" republicans, and for the purpose of projecting the money question into the next campaign. The truth is they dare not precipitate such a crisis as must follow such legislation, aud the sole object is to fight a campaign on pledges which are never intended to be kept. How loug will the peopl suffer such paltering policies, and permit themselves to be made a party to such a game of "'fast and loose." The power is uow iu the hands of the Republican party. Let the people call them to an account of its use.

IT is said that within a few days formal announcement will be made of the candidacy of B. F. Shively for the Democratic nomination for governor, Mr. Shively is an able man and a clean man, and would reflect credit upon himself, his party and his state as its chief executive. He was the candidate in 1896 and made a vigorous canvass. Logically he is entitled to the honor should it be deemed expedient. He will go into the convention with a strong following, no matter what other candidates may appear.

THE Indiana Bureau of Statistics estimates the corn crop or this state for this year at 151,23(5,804 bushels the largest ever reported. Indiana is a great state. Her rich soil never fails to produce more than enough to feed her people and domestic animals, and she pours out her bounty to feed the hungry of other lands. Great is Indiana'

THE Cuban's virtues are not so lum inous as they once were, while bis de Sciences are more glaring still. He is neither capable of self government nor pleasant to govern. Yet as was said of the Scotchman, perhaps much may be made of him if he be caught young.

REPRESENTATIVE HEPBURN, of Iowa says that he will introduce a bill providing for the construction of the Nicaragua canal so soon as Congress meets. The digging of the canal is a gigantic undertaking, and it will cost an immense sum of money. The advantages to this country should the canal be made are obvious, but it jn the Republican party of the Elev-

THAT it may be possible to soon withdraw twenty per cent, of the army from Cuba is good news. A military government is sometimes necessity, but it should be dispen^d with as soon as possible.

THE battleship Kentucky has made her speed trial and is credited with an excellent showing. The navy of the United States will soon be cue high rank at the present rate of progress.

PEOPLE are paying some attention to the revolution in Peru at last They are paying more for their cocaine by almost $4 per ounce than before it occurred to the Peruvians to "revolt."

NEITHER are the silver Republicans all dead. And now what will the O. P. do about it? Another lively corpse is to be dealt with.

THE "open door" is a good thing but sometimes it proves to be an open grave for somebody.

FOR the lynching of Marion Tyler the 'r'ederal jury agreed that a damage of $5 rotilcl be sufficient. It deemed the sheriff guilty if gross negligence, but the life of the prisoner of slight value tu those suing for damages. The point of interest iu the whole matter is that tin sheriff may be held responsible iu such a case. No doubt this will cause sheriffs to be extremely careful in guarding such prisoners hereafter.

Tin: financial distress of the great publishing house of Harper 6c Bros, is deeply regretted by the whole country. They have long been noted for the high class of their publications, and they have helped set a high standard for American periodicals as well as books It is to be hoped that their affairs may be so adjusted that their business may be continued.

THERE is talk of currency reform by this republican congress, and it is being urged upon the attention oi that botly by those deeply iuterested in the matter. Perhaps they will, and then perhaps they wont—most likely :he latter.

THE Hon. Cecil Rhodes does not feel quite so safe iu Kimberly as he once did. It is not quite "Piccadilly" after all. The Boers are too numerous aud surprisingly insistent.

SENATOR CHANDLER would have the Republican party suppress the trusts. Senator Hanna would have it protect them. Whose counsel will prevail? It i- not difficult to predict.

PERHAPS the people of Kentucky will settle down now to meditate over their sins aud repent. Well they exclaim: "What fools we tals be!"

Agiinaldo has that aggravating habit attributed to the Irishman's flea. When the finger is put on him he isn't there.

THE republicans have a majority of thirteen in the lower house. Significant number! What will they do with it? ..

Helled and Apostrophed. Why do we imitate the mule? Because his whole cause, course and tenor is elevating beyond a doubt, the shadow of a doubt, or the shade of a shadow or the shadow of a shade. Talk about the invention of the steam ecpine, the continuous motioned loem, the plow, the reaper and the street car, the mule was in it first and has ever won the war, the first prize generated the movement of all naval engagements, in fact has more expansive and contractive power than all others named and nameless, not excepting old ocean's tides the alpha and omega of successterreetial and celestial without a parullel or an equator, and the poets of the Gods are ever in the galleries, placed there by the aforesaid animal with all his sweet falsetto voices.
