MANY kind things are being iid of the dead ice President. He was not prominent in national politics, and as he was unknown beforej so he remained. The office of Vice-President has a tendency to obsciire rather than to make prominent the incumbent. As the law provides for no successor, the office will be vacant during the remainder of M'cKinley's term. Mr. Hobart was essentially a business man. and politics was subordinated to business interests by him. It was supposed at the time of his nomination that this was a large element in iu his selection.
BOOSER T. WASHINGTON now has a book in press which deals with the question of '"The American Negro.'' The book is intended to show the negro his possibilities, by showing the progress made under the most adverse conditions. Mr. Washington is a true friend to his race, and he is encouraging his people to work out their own salvation in the only possible way, that is by self dependence and by taking advantage of the opportunities presented, as whites must do. Every colored man should read this book and learn wisdom from its pages.
DEWEY'S transfer of his gift house to his wife and thence to his son has excited considerable comment, and that of an unfavorable character. The motive is not quite clear, and the donors and the general public feel that he should have retained it so long as possible. It then should be given to the uation and so preserved as a monument to the Admiral. It would then become a point of interest to future generations. On the surface it appears that the gift was lightly held.
THE way in which petitions to Congress praying that polygamist Roberts be unseated, are being circulated, would indicate that the gentleman is about to enter upon a rough road. It is indeed time that the crime of polygamy should be'destroyed, root and branch. Enough of disgrace has fallen on the country without allowing a polygamist to sit in Congress.
JOHN D. SPECKLES, of San Francisco. who is a member of the Republican national committee, openly declares that he is an anti-expansionist. He thinks the money spent in the present war if used in irrigating the west would return a profit many fold greater than any ever to be obtained from the Philippines. There is plenty of room to develop this country yet.
FUAXK B. POSEY next proclaims his intention of working early and late for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. He modestly says that he wants the office. The early coming of candidates does not assure an avoidance of the rush. There are enough candidates in sight now to fill the office for the next fifty 3rears.
WHEN Congress convenes the pressure from corporations will begin. Then little concerns will "git gobbled" if they "don't watch out." A Republican Congress is notorious for following the Scriptural idea that to him that hath shall be given, and from him that hath not. shall be taken away even that which he hath.
GENERAL LAWTON narrowly escaped drowning while fording a swift river a few days ago. The country and army could illy spare Lawton. He is the kind of soldier of whom there is always too few.
GOVERNOR LEARY is actively engage l^in^maUing over the uatives of tli3 Isle of Guam. He lias issued pioclmatioiis rwrgauizing the whole industii.i', social and moral system. The people are lazy, improvident and notoriously las in morals. The Govern i.s denunciation and commands atv all very well iu their way, but what effect they will have 011 the barbarians remains to be seen.
As DEWEY'S admirers lauded him to the skies in too l'ulsome a manner, some are now condemning him in a manner equally foolish, because he has committed a blunder in transferring a gift. This is rank injustice. Dewey's service to the country has in no way lost its greatness, and there is no reason why he should be humiliated or harshly judged. He is only a man after all.
IN many parts of the country the ministers are turning their attention to the evils of divorce, and condemning those who remarry persons divorced for other than (he scriptural reasons. This is a move in the right direction, aud if pursued vigorously will create a public sentiment on the question which will exert a powerful aud wholesome influence 011 seciety. Push it along.
WHAT the Trans-Siberian railroad will do for Russia will not be small. The development of that great tract of country iu Asia must follow, and a tremendous impetus given to the Slavic race. Iu the east the Slav will meet the Saxon, aud the question of the winner is an open one. Both races are of immense virility, and when they meet comes the tug of war.
THE Fort Ringgold episode is rather startling in some respects. Just why the citizens should fire on tlie fort, or the soldiers should bombard the town is not easily understood. There was certainly a sad lack of management somewhere, and the responsibility should be fixed. Due punishment should be meted out to the guilty parties.
RI/MOK has it that Geueral Alger may be appointed Governor General of Cuba. It is scarcely credible, and yet he seems to have some string to the administration. He was not gotten out of the position of Secretary of War until he had disgraced himself and the whole country.
DR. SEE, a noted astronomer iu the government service, says this was not the right year for the meteors to fall anyhow, but that the great shower will take place in November next year. It is not unlikely that something will drop about that time if we are to have the heated campaign which is promised us.
JUST how the people are to be beufitted by the destruction of the manufacturing plants which have been absorbed by the trusts is one of the questions which will be asked next year. It is one which high tariff advocates will find it difficult to answer in a satisfactory answer.
TUE most radical opponents of Mr. Bryan concede that he always advocates what he believes to be the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This is one great secret of his popularity. His sincerity has bound to him friends with hooks of steel such as no mere politician may ever win.
COLONEL BELL of the thirtj'-sixth volunteer infantry, is the latest hero to write his name 011 the scroll of fame. He is credited with the capture of an insurgent captain aud two privates, unaided and tinder a heavy fire. The American soldier is all right.
GENERAL FI NSTON has had his holiday aud his season of laudation, and is again on his way back to Manila. He is the kind of man that makes a record when he starts soldering.
GENERALS ALGER and Eagan must find the report of the British beef scandal as soothing balm to to their wounds. They have found congenial company at last.
No PETITIONS are being circulated asking Congress to unseat the Sultan of Sulu. Why is this thus? A clean sweep of polygamy would not be a bad thing.
THE Tyler lynching case is sufficiently interesting for men holding the office of sheriff to thoroughly dampen the ardor of any prospective candidates.
WHERE did the Boers learn their military science? Are they being maneuvered by some skilled strategist from England's secret European enemies.
THE people who were recently I Hiding Dewey to the sloes histd his picture in a Washington theativ fewdays ago, because he gave snvn\ his house. That was a little h.sst-y. in 1 view of the fact, that they did not know why he did it. So lickle is popular applause.
THE visit of Emperor William to Queen Victoria assumed quite the aspect of a family affair. The rest of the world is looking 011 in amazement at the spectacle of the IlellicoseKaiser suddenly grown so pacific.
TILE 'suit of the State of Indiana againstthe Vandalia railroad fur a part of the earnings, as provided by the charter, involves a sum of something like $2,000,000. The case is of more than passing interest.
IT is a dreadful state of atlairs that prevails in Philadelphia, so far as fraud iu elections is concerned, if the press of that city tells the truth. A process of purification should begin at once.
AND now part of the British press is charging 1 hat the bad beef furnished to the English soldiers comes from America. Shall we never get our skirts cleared from that beef scandal?
NOT so easy a task after all is it to whip the Boers. They regard war as a very serious business when once engaged in it, and they push it in a business like manner.
AND the women of Chicago lia?e decided that Generals Lee anil Wheeler shall also have gift swords. Of the making of swords there is 110 end.
THE Boers have turned out to be a rather warm chestnut to rake from the fire, small wonder the Britons want help.
THE Americans may have captured Aguinaldo's clothes, but he will scarcely miss them in that climate.
GENERAL JOUBERT, as has happened in other instances is proving rather a lively corpse.
THE profession of the lyncher is fast falling into disrepute in the State of Indiana.
DEWEY is finding that it is easier to be forgiven of a.crime than a mistake.
