Marion Soldiers Heme. They claim thai the recent decision of the Supreme Court est ubli.shing their rights also makes them eligible to office. Therefore they have risen iu their might and ask the republican party in Grant county to nominate men from ieir number for the office of recorder and ht-ri(T. The republicans had not t-xpected this and had other plans. They will lind it very hard to escape fi-
the demands of the old soldiers and tnere is no reason on earth why they should not get the offices if they are able to fill them.
AN employe of the Pennsylvania railroad has invented an automatic firer for locomotives which, it is said, will do away with firemen altogether. It is claimed that the firing will be done with perfect regularity and a great saving of fuel, and can be easily manipulated by the engineer. This will not be pleasant uews to the large number of men who are employed in the business of locomotive firing. In trie process of readjusting forms of labor some individual hardship is sure to occur.

DURBIN is no longer
hiding in the bushes and making a still hunt for the Republican noniiuatiou for governor. He has put on his war paint, sharpened his tomahawk and landed iu the ring with a loud warwhoop. He considers John L. Griffiths his most dangerous competitor, and banks on his war record. He evinces no fear of Haggard's candidacy.
have been kept constantly in
formed that the people of Ohio were so supremely satisfied with the overwhelming prosperity they were enjoying, that they could not possibly think of making auy changes in the administration of affairs. Now we are informed that the election of Xash is a vindication of the President's Philippine policy. It is very, very hard to harmonize these two claims.
THE element that gave support to Golden Rule Jones is an element that must be reckoned with in the elections hereafter. People are growing tired of the party lash, and are rising above narrow partisanship in questions of vital moment to the public wellfare. Ihe day will come when politiciaus will have to be good if they expect to be happy.
ONE hundred harness horses made a record of 2:10 or better this season. This demonstrates the marvelous evolution of the trotting and pacing horse in America within the past few years. It is a very brief time indeed when 2:10 was thought to be an impossible mark.
THE inter-urban electric lines in the gas belt are being pushed by their projectors. They will certainly be highly beneficial to the section through which they run. The -easy communication thus established will render farm life along the lines doubly attractive.
LIEUTENANT XIBLACK regards the Sultan of Sulu as something of a white elephant, and recommends that he be traded to the Dutch. We are very rapidly getting a fine lot of white elephants on hand which in the near future will begladly disposed of at prices to suit purchaser.

DESPITE the strenuous efforts made by the Republican .machine to carry Nebraska, the result was a great personal victory for Bryan. The fight was made upon him, aud the victory leaves no shadow of doubt that he will be nominated by the Democracy again. The ardent efforts of the liepublican management to discredit him in some way have availed nothing and uo thought of any other leader of the Democratic forces will be entertained.
GOVERNOR MOUNT has been having a rather lively time iu investigating the charges made by Elwood citizens against the police commissioners of that citv. The charge of notorious aud flagrant violation of law permitted "by the police commissioners were such as to arouse excitemeLt of the warmest kind. The good citizens of Elwood are right, and they certainly ought to gain their point. It is a good thing for a euy always to compel obedience to the laws.
THE soldiers' home at Marion has a full grown scaudal over a stolen package of money containing $1,710. Ii was lost in August during pension week, and so far investigation has failed to reveal the guilty party. The fact that this is the first affair of the kind at that institution speaks well for the care exercised by the management. At present Captain Heichert, treasurer, is the persoual loser by the theft.
THE suit for damages for the lyuc'uing of Marion Tyler is of unusual interest to the people of this state. If the sheriff is held liable it will render that office particularly undesirable. If judgment is rendered iu favor of the plaintiff, it would seem more just to hold the couuty responsible. No man would cute as sheriff to either sacrifice his life in defense of a crimi-
nal or pay damages hanged bv a mob.
WE are again iuformed that Otis is just on the point of completely crushing the "rebellion"—wiping it out root and branch as it were. The report has a very familiar sound, but it may be true. That is the gentleman's business in that section, aud there are not a few who believe that he has been none too expeditious.
IT is reported that Taggart is being pushed by his friends for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination on the "still hunt" plan. It will not be necessary to pursue that system long if the Mayor really desires to be a candidate for the high office of Governor.
THE Indiana Bicycle Company has dismissed 'ts 3,S00 traveling agents, besides a considerable number of other employes in branches of the work discontinued since the company entered the bicycle combine. Every dav are the blessings of trusts becoming more manifest.
IF so small a number of Filipinos are engaged iu the "insurrection" the report of the commission iudicates we may well ask why it requires an army of (55,000 men aud time unknown to subdue them. There is a very marked discrepancy somewhere.
EVIDENTLY Hauua's "bar'l" was deeper than that of McLean, and he won in the great boodle campaign in Ohio. This is a country where the majority rules, but the real name of it is money. Some day it may be better, and it may be worse.
THE Prince of Wales celebrated his fifty-eighth birthday a few days ago. He is getting along in years while waiting for the throne. He has fallen upon evil days, A few centuries ago and a trifling revolution would have done the work.
THE list of men who won "personal triumphs" in the recent election continues to grow. Many men, it seems, needed vindication.
WHAT shall be done with Cuba is still an uusolved problem. It will take longer to civilize than it did to free her.
CHINA must be exceediugly pleased to hear that Germany is iuteu ting lo pursue the "live and let live" o-.icy toward her. She must have euleitained grave doubts,at times, whether auy oue was yoiug to accord to her such a right.

WHEN the Samoan claims are settled aud the three great nations have taken everything in sight, will the simple Samoan have a pile of sand under a cocoanut t»ee whereon to lay 1 his head
THE South African blacks are prepariug to go on the war path aud take a hand iu the bloody business I now goiug ou there. The situation will be serious indeed if this is done
THE citizeus of Milwaukee have presented swords to Generals McArthuraiid King. The returning heroes will certainly be well armed at the present rale ol pioceedure.
THE Freuch press is now finding a vent for suppressed feeling iu deuouuciug the British. Talk is generally cheap, but sometimes it gives a nation costlv trouble.
IN elections of '"off" years it is easy for the political prophet to read great things for the future. A harmless business is prophecy, but larly profitable.
