"THE friends of Congressman Landis are now assuring the public that all opposition to that gentleman's renomination has died. For the first time when they believe that opposition is a corpse do they acknowledge its existence. It may possibly be found to be a very lively corpse before the time for nomination rolls around. The record of Mr. Landis on the civil service is noi such as to appeal with great force to the very large branch of his party that believe iu the system. Of the spoils system we have had enough and to spare.

THE talk about this country giving material assistance to England in case there should be interference by some other European nation in the South African difficulty is simply a bad case of "Tommy-rot." Whatever may arise in the future there is now uo earthly reason in sight why America should not keep her finger out of the pie. It is a quarrel of very doubtful ethical propriety on the part of Great Britain, and it would ill become America to get too enthusiastic iu her demonstration of friendship for the British.

COL. BADEN POWELL

commanding

the British forces at Mafeking when summoned by Col. Crouj to surrender aud "avoid further bloodshed," refused, saving: "When will the bloodshed begin A brave auswer and worthy of an English soldier, but he I found the very next day when the bloodshed would begin, and he'asked for an armistice in order to bury his dead. The Boers generously assisted to place the dead iu the wagon, and demonstrated the fact that they not only knew how to fight, but also how to treat a foe with generosity, and meet him on the common ground of humanity. Evidently there is good blood being spilled on both sides, and it might better be employed than in watering African soil.

ONE

continues to criti

cise the administration in a manner that must be rather galling to the Hanua coterie. Sherman believes that the party of Lincoln and Grant has fallen upon evil days under the guidance of weak, incompetent or tinscrupulous'bands, aud does not hesitate to say so. Sherman is out of politics, and now speaks from the standpoint of an American citizen rather than a partisan. The fact gives new importance to his opinion.

to President Schurman,

of the Philippine commission, polygamy is one of the cardinal principles of the religion of the Sulus, as they are Mohammedan aud he thinks it would be very unwics to attempt to interfere with it in any way. So we are confronted with another condition that requires careful handling, and complications are becoming more complicated in the Orient.

GENERAL FONSTON

I

Iris a cheering piece of intelligence that two-thirds of the gas territory remains untouched. The statement will gain more credence when the gas from that territory once demonstrates the fact that it is combustible. a

anent Imperialism: "\\V way out into the great w.-Vlit ithout necessarily thereby Hing shipwrrck and disaster. We may succeed and bring bark the golden tleive." 'J rue indeed! But is well to remember tliHi i.ations sometimes go out fur go I leu fleece and come back tleced. The Philippine golden fleece is certainly guarded by the dragon and he lias not yet been fed upon the sleepcompelling compound that renders his conquest easy. It was stratep-m after all, that brought back the golden fleece.

THE mule is a sorry substitute for the war horse of Solomon—the fiery steed with the thunder-clad neck and the red nostril. He will be much in disrepute in the English army, heuceforth, and it is safe to say that he will not be left attached to gun and "unhitched." It was a particularly treasonable and ungrateful trick on the part of the mule at Ladysmith when they ran away with the gun and left the poor Brittons unarmed and at the mere}- of the Boers. They were certainly furnishing "aid aud comfort to the enemv."

IN General Guy V. Henry the country loses a gallant gentleman and soldier. He has served his country well, aud bore in many scars the evidence of his courage Uud loyalty. His soldiers lovingly called him "Fghtiug Guy," a sobriquet which bears witness to the esteem and admiration iu which he was held by his soldiers, and a testimonial to his soldierly qualities which many a man, whose trade is war, would be proud to win. He needs no higher eulogy than the name his soldiers gave him. ..

WHEN a man once arrives at the conviction that he is carrying out personal desire oniy from a high sense of duty and moral obligation, he is a dangerous man. Entangled in the web of his own sophistry he seldom fails to enmesh others. As with men so is it with nations. It is refreshing and wholesome for either individual or nation to sometimes stand level aud look into the eyes of truth. It is quite helpful often in finding the right path of dutv.

of the expected-to-be-a cadi-

date-for-Governor republicans, Col. Dodge, savs that it becomes more and more patent that none but boodlers need apply. The man with thebarrel will win the nomination, and others will be turned down, not gently "but with exceeding great firmness. Haggard is supposed to be willing to produce the necessary article if desired. At anyrate he is pushing his claims night and day.

AN anxious search is now being made by republicans for a progressive: unambitious, well-know-^, retiring, popular, pliable, properly located, just-the-right-sort-of-a-man. They want him for a Vice-Presidential candidate. They want a martyr to cheerfully meet political death, and walk smilingly into the open grave of the vicepresidency, and they would like for him to pay his own funeral expenses. None other need apply.

IT

is intimated that our "interest in China" will receive the presidential attention and will be protected, etc. It is evident that the appetite of the chief executive for land has not been appeased by the Philippine crumb from the Oriental feast, but he wants a slice of the Flowery Kingdom as well. It looks bad for the Chinaman, very bad indeed.

DR. MCGIFFERT

has made ar

rangements to sue Archbishop Ireland for statements made in an interview in Chicago to the effect that Funston had looted Catholic churches in the Philippines. Very naturally the General resents such a reflection upon him. It would be hard for the people of this country to believe that an American officer would be guilty of such outrageous conduct.

refused to resign

from the Presbyterian ministry. Yet he is not a presbyterian according to his own statements of his views. It certainly requires considerable assurance on the part of the good Doctor to hold dowii his job iu Union Seminary. If such instructors are retained the crop of heretics will surely increase.

THE progress of the colored brother will be shown by an exhibit at the Paris exposition. Let him spend himself and show the fastidious Frenchman what he can do when he has a chance. The world is waiting for him to demonstrate his capabilities, and he must work out his own salvation.

IT IS reported that a baking powder factory will be erected in Chicago by a company organized for the purpose of fighting the trust formed by the old companies. They may be able to raise bread and the old companies at the same time.

THE Cubans §till clamor for "protection" for some of their products. The Cuban is being assimilated with amazing celerity.

v'

WHILE Governor Mount was over in Ohio whooping things up for Nash, the white caps were playing the part of the mice ihat take advantage of the absent eat. Muucie has a few white caps who care carrying on a lively correspondence with a man whom they do not like. They make untrue charges and the victim is preparing to give them the shot gun welcome.

IF the wisdom of Mark Hanna is to be judged by his recent utterances on the trusts, tariff aud expansion, it were better for his party to persuade him to onfiut his eloquence to the "barrel argument rather tliau to give it voice. As a silent orator he is a shining illustration of the aphorism that "money talks."

THAT

\\. J. Bryan continues to

make enemies iu certain quarters is quite as much to his credit as the fact that he makes friends in some others. No man of character aud honest conviction is without his enemies and never is he without friends.

IT is safe to say that Sir Thomas Lipton is afar more popular man in this country to-day than he would have been had he won the America's cup. He would not have been given such an ovation on his departure as he received, had that been the case.

THE average college boy is extremely busy at this season of the year in "rooting" for his favorite foot ball team, aud tryingto kill off "inrushes" his deadly enemies iu other classes. A hard worked vouth is he.

THE Vice-President of Mexico is visiting this country aud reports himself as well pleased with us. He may have may have some fault to find after he gets back home, as has sometimes happened in similar eases. ft

THE French are slightly jubilant over Great Britain's disaster. It is still true that misery loves company. France has mourned so loug and so often that she is quite in love with the sable.
