THE way General Funston walks over the politicians is simply awful. The effort of the pop-gun politician, aud political pea shooter to pose as the power behind the throne that boosted Funston into his opportunity, meets with little sympathy ftom that bellicose gentleman. His language savors of the picturesque and pungent variety said to have been used by a certain army in Flanders, and it may be al most as bad with the army in the Philippines. He deals with the politicians as follows "The fact of the matter is, the Kansas regiment would have rotted in the sand lots at Camp Merritt, would never have gone to Manila, would be in the Philippines yet, I would still be a colonel, and would soon be a private citizen, if it had depended upon the exertions or influence of these politicians. The Kansas regiment was about the last regiment to leave San Francisco, and was the last but two to leave Manila. A whole hell's acre of political influence would not have affected the order of coming or going.''

WE are told that New England mills are swamped with orders and that prosperity is abroad in that section of the country. The long period of inactivity has exhausted the supply and now more articles must be manufactured. Every sane person hopes that prosperity is coming and the surplus supply they have in New Enggland cannot be shoved west too rapidly to suit the people. The wonderful resources and recuperative ability of the country must finally react, no matter how bad the economic policy pursued- The country would always be in a prosperous condition if given half a chance.

WHEN a man or party conceives the notion that all wisdom and patriotism and things of good report reside within him or it, while all other men or parties are utterly lacking in those very desirable qualities, it is high time to send for the horse doctor. A drench is needed, and needed badly. A moral might be painted and a tale adorned, by many living, breathing instances of this in our own great country just at the present time.

EVEN the Indianapolis News, in a fit of candor, admits that Bryan is the most popular man in politics in the United States to-day—with a popularity like that of Clay and Webster. It consoles itself with the pleasing thought that Clay and Webster were never elected to the Presidency, and hopes that history will repeat itself in the case of Bryan. A whistle is said to be soothing in a graveyard.

SENATOR HANNA, of Ohio, boldly proclaims that combinations of capital area good thing, an excellent thing, in short, quite an unmixed blessing, and doubtless they are for Senator Hanna and his kind. But from the standpoint of the people they ate very different things. They more resemble the chastening rod when applied to the wants of the public.

STRANGE that republican managers should see fit to.burn so much powder, and display so much red fire in a ,'sure thing" state like Ohio. It must be a recognition of the fact that the wicked stand in slippery places.

NOBODY objects to our factories building up trade with the whole world, if possible. That is the kind of expansion that is of the right sort. Let us have more of the victories of peace.

THE New York Presbyterian synod has approved Bishop Potter's stand on the divorce question, and enjoins upon all its ministers to absolutely refuse to marry divorced persons except thf innoceiit party under a divert" panted for Scriptural reasons. Tli is a commendable movement, aiui it should be followed by all other churches. The prevalence of divorce is alarming, and the tendency to regard lightly the marriage tie is one of the signs which indicate decay of the social fabric. It is time for a reform in these lines, and it is in the power of the church to institute it. It should meet with the hearty approval of all persons interested in the welfare of society, and the permanence of American institutions.

pressure of population in

Europe increases the strife for foreign territory will be intensified. For four hundred years America has furnished the safety valve. But that time is past, and other outlet must be found for the teeming millions of the old world. Africa and South America furnish the most promising fields, and the struggle for their possession by some strong progressive race is not far in the future. The Sclav and the Anglo Saxon are the mighty figures in the arena now, and the lesser Teuton and Latin watch to deal a death blow to some wounded gladiator. Truly the situation is becoming interesting, and interesting from many points of view.

THE Illinois Supreme Court dealt a trust a body blow in deciding that the Glucose Company, of Peoria, is a trust and its charter void under the auti-trust laws of the state. What is the matter in Indiana that some of the Taylors, Mounts and Landis, who occupy high official positions do not take action on some of the tentacles of the octopus here? They have talked sufficiently. It is time for action, i,,

A

STRANGE

fatality appears to follow

all who were concerned in the Dreyfus affair. Col. Schneider, the Austrian military attache, is dead as the result of a duel fought a few days since with Capt. Cuignet of the French army. He was prominently connected with the alleged treason of Dreyfus. The eternal scales of justice are being used in meting out swift punishment.

GOVERNOR ROOSEVELT, of New'York, seems to be developing a bad case of the hair-trigger mouth. He has fallen into the baneful habit of talking long and often and speaking as intemperately and foolishly as might become the communist blatherskite. He should take some sort of pest cure and make it his chief business to keep still for many months to come.

MR. CHAMBERLAIN does not make his justification overly evident. Sir Edward Clarke declares the war un. necessary and a crime against civilization. Other prominent English statesmen believe tne same, and Chamberlain may find himself occupying a rather unpopular attitude before the war is finished.

EVERY true American will rejoice that the America's cup is still to stay on this side of the water. It is not possible to always keep it, but this time it was fairly won again, and the Columbia in every trial showed herself the better boat. She is the swiftest yacht ever floated and well may we be proud of her.

SIR THOMAS LIPTON is the right sort of a man. He does not go into' a corner to sulk over his defeat, but takes it like a man and a philosopher. Such a man is a worthy opponent, and had he won the Arnericau cup, it would have]fallen to the lot of aright gallant and worthy one to win it.

"EVOLUTIONS in business methods" or in other words, trusts, may possibly have come to stay as their friends confidently predict. Whether they go or stay depends upon what the people see fit to do at the polls in November, 1900. The whole remedy is in their hands.

THE combinations in woolen goods and coal make a happy combination of affairs for the man who expects to keep warm by means of clothing or fire. The faith cure for such bodily ills is the oAy refuge, and there appears to be a monopoly of that article ju3t at present. ,, v.

THERE are plenty of public questions just now that are worthy of the careful consideration of the honest citizen. Before the heat of the campaign iB a good time to study condi tions, and consider economic questions

and arrive at an impartial decision.

IT is finally fully and indubitably settled. Prosperity is abroad in the land. William McKinley has said so, aud after the custom of his predecessors calls upon the people to return thanks for blessings received aud ills escaped, ou Thursday, November 30.

CHICAGO gobbled up Austin, a town of 15,000 inhabitants, the other day. That enterprising city in the race for first place, will keep growing by hook or by crook. There is no Brookly in sight, however, for her to capture as did New York.

GOLDEN RULE JONES is giving the Ohio Republicans cause for serious alarm. It is predicted that he will poll from 80,000 to 160,000 votes aud mostly at the expense of Nash. That means McLean's election.

WE cooly turned down China's request for a modification of the exclusion act. John gets scant courtesy from the Caucasian. He will soon feel a heavy foot ou his Mongolian neck.

THE alleged wave of prosperity has stirred numerous railroad corporations to raise freight rates. They will not be left out of any good thing, or even a suspicion of a good thing. ,r

AND Russia is willing to arbitrate the Behring Sea question. An epidemic of "sweet reasonableness" appears to be sweeping certain parts of Europe.

WHILE the government at Washington lives the patriotic officeholder will manage to survive many a vicissitude of changing fortune.

RUSSIA is recognizing the fact that it is good to dwell with neighbors in harmony. She probably *vill except poor China
