THE man who is going to give the trusts a solar plexus blow has not appeared yet. Some prominent statesmen who were open and avowed enemies of the nefarious combinations whereby the people were robbed and private industries strangled, are suddenly maintaining a strange and dignified silence. They have evidently made the startling discovery that it is extremely injudicious for statesmen who are looking for jobs or hoping to hold the ones they have, to say cruel or unkind things of those things called trusts. Therefore has a silence fallen upon them, and they await the crack of the ringmaster's whip, when the tractable creatures will obediently fall in line, and if need be lick the capitalistic boots, as it were, and kiss the capitalistic hand while it smites their constituents.

GENERAL SHAFTER has reached the age limit and has been entered on the retired list of the regular army. He will remain in command of the department of Pacific until relieved or mustered out with the Spanish war volunteers. His part in the Spanish war was a rather inglorious one, and he made little of an opportunity to render his name a distinguished one. The personal side of the equation was entirely too large.

THE glass trust is worrying over the knotty problem of fixing a scale of wages for employes and the pric6 of glass. It cannot guess just how much the public will stand, but having once captured the brute, the cuticle will will probably be removed to the tip of the ebony feline's caudal appendage. That is the philosophical and progressive principle usually employed by concerns of that character.

"GERMANY is in bitter need of a strong fleet," says Emperor Willliam. He fears that in the great struggle for possessions of disputed lands Germany will lose. He has an ambition to be a laud grabber also, and without a powerful fleet he is helpless. It must be confessed that Germany has not the best situation in the world to make an unlimited "expansion."

MANY Democrats are looking to Taggart as a possible condidate for Governor. The winning of his election against the bitter and unscrupulous fight that was put up against him, has strengthened him throughout the State, and he can have the nomination if he chooses.

THE sympathies of the German people are with the Boers. They too have material interests which require a jealous guarding. In fact, the complications which may arise, should the war be long protracted, are almost endless, and may involve a number of the great European nations.

Yaqui Indians are still creat

ing some stir in Mexico. The Mayos have recently joined, and they are preparing to have a general good time at the expense of the Mexicans. It is a hard matter to teach the noble red man the fleeting and extremely evanescent character of such pleasures. He learns nothing from experience, and simply has to le killed before lie will be good. He has been a very hard customer to assimilate iu the most benevolent mauner. but the ostrich like Anglo Saxon will finally accomplish the feat.

A

NEW

cabinet office is being talked

of—another wheel iu the machinery of government as it were. It will be a department of commerce, and the official head will have charge of interstate and foreign commerce. Sucha change is deemed necessary owiug to the recent increase in territory and to our new relation toward the rest of the world. The president will make such recommendation in his next message. A few more additions and the aforesaid machinery will have become ponderous, indeed.

THE friends of General Lawton are urging that he be appointed to succeed the retiring General Shafter. That would be an honor worthily bestowed, and would be particularly pleasing to the people of Indiana. It is no more than is due in simple recognition of the distinguished service he has rendered his country. While rewards are being handed out Lawton should not be forgotten. I' 0

THE supposed Audree buoy found on the north coast of King Charles' island, renews interest iu the expedition of the bold balloonist. He had agreed to drop this if he should succeed in passing the pole. It is possible that he is safe among some isolated people of the far north, but it is extremely doubtful. So bold a deed deserves success, aud that he might be the one to solve the problem once for all.

REPCBLICAN officials over the state, and those in the Federal government service from this state were asked to contribute to the campaign fund of their party in the Indianapolis contest, according to Washington dispatches. Yet the partisans of the party call it a clean campaign. It is really difficult for Satan to see just how black he is.

IRON and things of iron and steel continue to rise in price, obedient to the trust. Scarcity must necessarily increase the price of the product, and the promoters are carefully regulating the supply to that end. The price and the supply are both in their hands, and the people have nothing to do but pay the bill.

"EX-PRESIDENT HARRISON is interested in a §250,000 fee from the Venezuelan government for his services before the Paris arbitration tribunal. If the revolutionists are successful he may lose that sum. All of which goes to show that revolutions expensive luxuries.

The Shakers of Mount Lebanon, a community of simple, honest. Godfearing men and women, have prepared the Shaker Digestive Cordial for many years, and it is always the same, simple, honest, cuiative medicine that has helped to make the Shakers the healthy, long-lived people that they are. The Shakers never have indigestion. This is partly owing to their simple mode of life, partly to the wonderful properties of Shaker Digestive Cordial. Indigestion is caused by the stomach glands not supplying enough digestive juice. Shaker Digestive Cordial supplies what's wanting. Shaker Digestive Cordial invigorates the stomach and all its glands so that after awhile they don't need help. As evidence of the honesty of Shaker Digestive Cordial, the formula is printed on every bottle. Sold by druggists, price 10 cents to $1 per bottle.

To accommodate those who are partial to the use of atomizers in applying liquids into the nasal passages for catarrhal troubles, the proprietors prepare Ely's Liquid Cream Balm. Price including the spraying tube, 75 cents. Druggists or by mail. The liquid embodies the medicinal properties of the solid preparation. Cream Balm is quickly absorbed by the membrane and does not dry up the secretions but changes them to a natural and healthy character. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren St., N. Y.
