The Only White Buffalo—A Curious bat Jol!y Sport—Obeying His aster.

DrTing the summer of 1875 bands of Indians returning irom a hnnt far out on the plains brcnght in stories of having seen at different tipies and in different places, and always in the center of a large herd, a white bufialo. They had used their beet horses id the effort to overtake it. but Jp po purpose never I being able to get anyw'iiefS near" tin? animal. At &r§t y?e did not pay much attention tg these stories, but still it jiept cropping up £$pm different camps, ia*t\ iS the fa0 of 1875,1 myself had a chance to verify the^rjtfi gf" the I report. I had been sthf otf duty north along the Red IJeer riv*f and was camped neaf a large band of Blackfeet, wh# were banting south of that river. The buffaloes had moved north in vast numbers, and the prairie was black with them. 1 had gone out one morning with a party of Blackfeet to see one of their htints and also to try to kill for myself. My horse was a good one and much faster than any belonging to the Indian hnntera I had got detached from the party, becoming tired of the slaughter, and must have been at least 20 milee Irom camp, when I made for a small clump of timber not far off, intending to build a fire and roast a portion of some buffalo meat I had on the saddle with me. As I approached the wood a band of about 100 animals burst out of the brush and made off to the south, and, yes, most certainly, in the middle of them was a white buffalo. Although they were a quarter of a mile away, there could be no mistake about it. He was there as large as life and quite white and running like a deer. There was no time to much more than take in the scene, but I gathered up the reins and was after him, determined to bag that buffalo or kill my horse.

Oh, what a race it was, mile after mile! And, although all the band, with the exception of about a dozen, bad split off and gone in different directions, the white animal, with his bodyguard of about a dozen, kept at about the same distance ahead. I could catch a glimpse of him now and then, and there was no doubt he was snow, white. Gci within shot I could irot for many miles. At last they began to tire, and, although my horse was tired also, I had good hope3 of coming up and getting a shot. Alas, for such a chancel Of a sudden my horse lurched forward on his nose, sending trie over his head on to the prairie and turning a somersault himself, missing me by only a few feet. He had put his foot into a badger hoi* and brought my hopes of a white rob» to a sudden end.—Forest and Stream.

A Curious Sport.

The word "tobogganing'' in most minds is indissolubly associated with blanket costumes and frosty weather, but in Perak, a state in the Straits Settlements, where blanket costumes art unknown and where the weather certainly isn't fro3ty, there exists a sort o! distant relation of this sport which it probably not enjoyed in any other part of the world.

There is a huge granite slope in the course of a mountain river, down which the water trickles about two inches deep, the nvain stream having carved out a bed by the side of the bowlder. This rock, the face of which has been rendered as smooth as glass by the constant flow of the water during hundreds of years, the Malays—men, women and children—have turned into a toboggan slide.

Climbing to the top of the rock, they sit in the shallow water, with their feet Btraight out and a hand on each side for steering and then slide down the 60 feet into a pool of water. This is a favorite sport on sunny mornings, as many as 200 folk being so engaged at time.

A timvly word to parents who permit their children to engage in wintei sports. Frozen or frostbitten hands, feet, nose or ears are easily got and as easily cured if you know how other wise the results are most serious. Thin condition is brought about by the coo traction of the cntaneonq vessels and if often the result of only slight cold. Th» chilled parts become very pale. After the first contraction there follows a dilatation of the vessels throughout thn affected area, which talsaa on a deep red color. Swelling develops, and thera is an itching or burning sensation. Sere re pain may occur when the frozeD parts are too rapidly warmed. The redness may disappear in a few days, but not infrequently it recurs. Paralysis ol the blood vef sels may remain throughout lifa Chilblains come from repeated slight freezing of the fingers and toes and frequently attack persons who have to daily change from hot to cold atmospheres. Women and pale people are more susceptible to mild degrees of freezing than those whose pulsation is strong and the blood supply ample. When blisten appear and there is a continued absence of sensation, say for two or three days, in the frozen parts, the case is very severe, and gangrene is likely to result I have amputated fingers, hands and e^er. legs because of freezing and the continued lack of proper medical attei» Hon.

In ordinary mild cases of freezinjj treatment may be effectually administered at home. Bear in mind that the affected part should not be warmed too rapidly, but should be bathed in snow or ice water for a few minutes, then wrapped in wet cloths. The patient should then be gradually warmed. If this does not bring relief, by all mean* call a physician. Predisposed people shankl keep their hunds and fee* well wrapped to avoid chilblains. Ordinarily when these are present cold applications bring relief.—Dr. John Dean it Bfc Louis Post-Dispatch.

YOU AKK A DEMOCRAT

and, of course, want a democratic newspaper. The Chicago Dispatch is the great democratic weekly newspaper of the country. It advocates the readoption of the platform and the renomination of William Jennings Bryan.

There has never been a political campaign that will equal in importance that of the one to be fought next year. The republican party, backed by the money power of this country and Europe, is alert and aggressive. Flushed with the victory of three years ago it will seek by every means in its power to maintain its supremacy.

Democrats must be up and doing. They must wf&ge an unceasing war upon their enemies. In no better and more effective way can this be done than by the circulation of good, sound democratic newspapers. The publisher of the Chicago Dispatch, will send to every new subscriber fur three months a copy of the Chicago Dispatch for ten cents. If you are not already taking this great political weekly, send in ten cents at once. You should not only do this
