THE
Waveland Independent thus apologizes for its solar plexus thrust at George Harney 'The Independent's recent reference to George Harney was intended to be jocular but it was a clumsy joke, no doubt. Here's our apologies to "Hub." Seriously, we think there is good congressional timber in Mr. Harney, and that he would be a more creditable representative than some men now in congress."
A Happ^ Woman. All the world loves a happy woman—one whose smiles are an inspiration to others. We love the woman who laughs, whether she be in the household, behind the counters in stores, in the business office or in society. The happy woman, sad .to relate, is rare.

Where you find one, you find a score weigh-
with sickness, weakness and woe that proceed
Irom 'female troubles." And yet there ought to be and can be a score of happy women to one who is unhappy. Those women whose lives are saddened by the drains upon the system, by prolapsus, by irregularities, by headache, nervousness and bearing-down pains, can be restored to happiness and health by Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, a medicine that is beyond question the best in the world for disorders of the womanly organs. Every ailment that besets the girl, the bride ana the mother, between puberty and the "turn of life," is cured by it. It keeps the prospective mother in a happy frame of mind, ?nd her good spirits are sure to be inher-

FRIDAYvery
night the habitues of the
houses of ill fame about town weie disagreeably surprised by an unexpected call from the police. They hail been expecting a week of licentious revelry and had imported a consignment of nymphs of the pavement expecting to be let jxlone and receive large returns, But affidavits were filed by Tom Clements against each establishment of the sort, and they were summarily closed down. Quite a large number of inmates and visitors were gobbled by the police and fined in the Mayor's court. Mr. Clements says he owns property next to one of these castles of sin, which he says he cannot rent for is much by two dollars per month as if it were some place else, or if the -aid bagnio was not there, and it is a losing game to him. He proposes to eep up the fight until the concern 'eta out. Tom has been generously nd enthusiastically "cussed" by a certain element for the part he played in the matter, but as he can hold his own, it is not likely he will suffer from it. It is a matter of wonder that this business cannot be broken up, and these women either forced into honest ways of living or made to leave town. Men tell us that it is a necessary evil. It is necessary only to men who preach a doctrine of that sort. Any man who claims to have a spark of manhood in him, who has a mother, wife, daughter or sister, to advocate such a hellish idea is fit for the stocks.
The Baby Show.
AT
the court House on Saturday afternoon was gathered a large aggregation of ladies, old, young, large, small, pretty and homely to take in all thedetails of the baby show. There were over 200 babies entered for the prizes. A competent committee was searched for to make the awards, and at last Henry Kline, of Muncie, W. J. McVeigh, of the Hey Rube band, and 0. B. Arms, none of them having babies of their own in the show or kinfolks in the county, consented to act. They gave the first prize for baby under one year old to Mrs. J. W. Henry second to Mrs T. B. Spillman third to Mrs. Cora Ilutton. For baby over one year and under two, the first premium was :arried away by Mrs. W. J. Flood: second by Esther Osborne third by Mrs. Amos Hays. The rest of the 200 mothers will always have it in for that committee: The baby show was a success, and the next time we have one we will have it arranged so everybody can see. There were hundreds turned away from the court house Saturday unable to even see inside the corridor.
New Counterfeit.
^j[OME of our friends may be lucky enough to occasionally get hold of a ten dollar bill. If so, they want it to be a good one. A new counterfeit has appeared, described as follows It is an imitation of the silver certificate of the series of 1S91 and bears the check letter "B" of plate No. 14. It is signed on the face with the forged signature of B. K. Bruce, registrar, and Ellis H. Roberts, treasurer. The portrait of Hendricks appears on the bill. The bill is said to be verjT deceptive, especially the back of it. The face is crude in its general appearance. So look out forjnich a bill and don't get buncoed.

Bill Chandler, a huge negro desperado, took it into his head to be a "bad nigger," Helen Howe, a young woman of color, had purchased a "hot Coney Island" and Bill desired a bite. She looked at the huge cavern he calls, a mouth, and then at the sausage and knew that there would lib none left for her, so she refused his very reasonable request. Bill then settled with her by slapping her jaws and otherwise maltreating her. He was given a lodging place in the Hotel Canine, and deserves ten years on the stone pile oti general principles.
