THE Chicago Tunes-Herald in au editorial speaks 111 t^rnis of the highest praise of Bryan, while it does not agree with his views on the silver question as a matter of course, yet it concedes to him the greatest sincerity of purpose, lofty character, a winning personality, intellectual brilliancy and eloquence. It says these elements are so mixed as to produce the best possible effect. The teudency of the smaller Republican press to indulge in sneers at Bryan's expense simply results in belittleing the authors of the diatribes. He stands before the country a clean, brainy, straightforward man, a born leader of men, whose high destiny is only uow becoming manifest. His position as the natural leader of the Democracy cannot be shaken, and whatever issues may come before the nation he is destined to play an important part iu fighting the battles of the plain people. The charge that he is a man of one idea has fallen to the ground, and he has demonstrated the fact that he is a broad and liberal minded man, capable of meeting any crisis that may arise. The Times-Herald recognizes this fact, and that he is the most popular man in the United States to-day. To remove him from that lofty eminence is no easy task.
COMMISSIONER OF PENSIONS, H. Clay Evans, has been most soundly berated for the manner iu which he has" administered his office. It has-been charged that be has worked great hardships and injustice to old soldiers by the rejection of pension claims. The charges may or may not le true, but his annual report j"»st submitted seems scarcely to sustain them. shows that 40.229 names were [added to the roll during the past year, and 43.1 $15 were dropped. 34.457 by reason of death. The value of the entire roll is §131,617.907, being $349,498 greater than ever before. On the pension list are 733,450 surviving soldiers, 237,415 widows and dependent relatives, and 653 nurses. Xo true American begrudges a penny of his pension to the deserving soldier, and none is more willing that fraudulent claims should le rejected than the patriotic soldier himself. The pension is a roll of honor, and it should be kept as stainless as the record of the soldier on the field. The American soldier fights only for principle, and the highest meed of praise is his. Honor to whom honor is due.
UCR own Governor Mount is going over into Ohio and make speeches for the republicans. The way the Governor has suppressed the white capers, chased the horse thieves, and smashed the trusts here puts him in splendid trim to let those Ohioans know how he did it. The trouble is the Governor's theories have not yet worked out. They will have to be ranked with the Keeley motor and the Xickum light. They are interesting relics, and that is all.
THE struggle for justice for one man in France is convulsing all Europe, and attracting the attention of the whole world. It is a question that touches not Dreyfus alone, but every man in France. Can a crime be committed by a nation in the name of justice, and no protest be made in the name of humanity? Let it not be believed
THE Pittsburg speech of the President had rather a grisley tone. Surely he is not so bloody minded as he would have the world believe.
I
THE A. M. E. conference, in -session at Indianapolis last week adopted resolutions which placed the minister-1 on record as opposed to the part, of the treaty with the Sultan of Su:u which recognizes slavery in the Philippines. They not only condemn tlu^ in forcible terms, but asked our representatives in congress to withold their approval from the treaty until the slavery clause is stricken out, aud one inserted forever abolishing .-lavery iu the Philippines. The resolutions are a credit to the Colored :aee and demonstrate the fact that it has tak.-n a Ion stride forward. The negro is beginning to forever regard his own inserests aud not whine about his misfortuues aud is coming forth on the broad plane of manhood, and preparing to be a positive force in the world. In this lies his salvation, and wheu he can take a broad and liberal view of affairs which touch him only as they touch other men, he proves that there are bright days ahead of him. His future is showing a roseate skv.
THE Klondikers who are so fortunate as to get back home are bringing a considerable quantity of the yellow metal. They are the few the story of the many is a story of suffering and misery that is horrible to contemplate. Possibly vast mines of wealth are hidden under the Alaskan snows, but it cannot be gotten without an expenditure of effort and of human life many times more valuable than all the gold vobtained.
A few
were fortunate, while a multitude 1 st their all. Gold is not a necessity to civilization Many things may be substituted for it, which will equally well perform its work. It is to be hoped that the folly of rushing to the Klondike has reached its climax, and men will put forth their str "ir'h it home where a fair reward is sine.
THE American building of the Atabara bridge and supplying cars for the Soudan railway, in .spite of British competition, knocks another prup from under^- the protective theorv. There can be no doubt that American manufacturers have outgrown thswadliug ilothes stage, aud it is high time to quit pleading the baby act. aud give other branches of industry a chance for life.
IT would seem from the lack of poise displayed by Gov. Roosvelt in his recent Hornellsville speech, that he is finding the large affairs of the Empire State weigh heavily upon his shoulders. That he drove a politics! spike into his coffin there is evident Men holding high offices may expect to to be called upon to give account of those high offices.
I SHOULD like to see autonomy first conceded and then annexation might be talked about I have never been in favor of violence toward the Filipinos." "I have the question of the Philppines more at heart than any other Americas, because I know the Filipinos intimately, and they know that I am their friend."—Admiral Dewev.
How the M'Kinley brand of prosperity does bless the humble tiller of the toil when he pays about 3 cents per pound more for wire to feuce his farm than last year. One little item like that ought to be sufficiently convincing to prove to any farmer that he is trulv blessed.
ONCE iu a while Nemesis treads close upon the heels of an evil doer. An Indianapolis man stole a horse a few days ago aud the animal, being a mettlesome steed, ran away throwing the thief out and tearing au ear nearly off. He is now wiser aud sadder, and likewise not so handsome.
CAATAIN CARTER, if convicted and punished, will simply suffer the consequences of guilt. He is not being persecuted after the manner of Dreyfus, as some editors would have the public believe. This is America, not France. There is a difference.
COAL is going up aud to what heights it will have climbed by the time snow flies, heaven and the trust companies only know. Of course the rich will still keep warm, and what difference then does it make about the poor?
BEEF still advances and there is an increased demand for eggs. Not so much meat is being eaten, and people are using an egg substitute. This may be prosperity, but hungry people would scarcely call it by that name.
SCIENTISTS have made some interesting researches and thrown so much light on the terms "dossier" and "bordereau" that American readers are almost as much in the dark concerning them as are the, South Sea Islanders.
ALL that is necessary to convince a Crawfordsvilie man that trusts are in stiiiments of Satau, designed to in crease the number of idle men. with hungry wives and babies, is to go out aud !.ok at the closed buildings of the wire fence company.
FOUAKER IS no longer the vise and trusted leader of Ohio republicans. Boss Hauna is a mightier man, and he will lead the forces again this year. What is more powerful than a "barl?"
WHEN people learn to vote for the interests of the people, aud refuse to see with the eyes of politicians, there will be real prosperity. They are learning to do this and a great change is at haud-
MAN can scarcely, in justice, be considered a traitor simply because he happens to entertain opinions different from those of the President of t.ie United States.
THE record breaking temperature of the first few days of September ought to convince the most skeptical that if the sua iscooliug off, it is very, very slowly.
MARK HANNA. iu all his stupendous vastuess and overshadowing greatness, is about to come home. The little ones iu Ohio will now have to ''watch out.''
THE Democratic party is not a -peace at any price" party, but it is opposed to subverting the principles upon which this government is founded.
SCTHE bicycle trust is one that will touch the interests of the major portion of American citizens. Those who do not ride, at least desire to do so.
IF
Governor Roosevelt continues his defense of that S3 000,000 canal steal, aven the G. O. P. will scarcelv dare to nominate him for president.
IF one reads only Ohio papers he nuuid be convinced, as said the iaic Bill Nye, "There are no great men save Ohio men."
REVOLUTIONS are quite the thing iu warm climates. Santo Domingo is going through one of those interesting episodes.
CHVIRMAN Hernley may be au honst, truthful man. but he lies quiet under stinging charges like a knave aud a liar.
,IADMIRAL DEWEY'S interview, published in the London Daily News, was a bomb-shell iu the Imperialistic camp.
PROSPERITY is au excellent thing, but it will not do to call all sorts and conditions by that pleasing appellation.
PEOPLE may continue to build houses with the prices of material climbing skvward. but it is rather doubtful.
GENERAL JIMINEZ is the great man in Santo Domingo to-day, but tomorrow mav tell a different storv.
•'••-KANSAS is not a bleeding member this year. She has a great corn crop, and it is now out of danger.
IF Mark Hanna should be converted in Europe, as was Croker what an awful thiug it would be.
ALMOST all the factions which opposed McLean, in Ohio, are now rallying to his support.
THE Marion county officers have troubles of their own an so do the tax-payers.
W AS Mr. Chamberlain ouly bluffing after all But then there's Russia.

The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least oi.'e dreaded disease thflt science has been able to cure in all its stages and that is catarrh, jjall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Hall'd Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upoD the blood and mucus surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials.
