WHEN the question of the auuexaof the Hawaiian Islands was being discussed, it was vigorously protested agaiust by many who, having resided in the islauds for some time, had observed the ravages of that most hideous of all diseases, leprosy. It was argued that once a part of this country, the closer contact and mingliug of our people with the natives must surely lead to the introduction of the disease into this eouutry. Dr. Daniel I\. Brown, of Chicago, has just returned from Hawaii and reports the most distressing condition as prevailing there. The efforts to prevent its spread have proven unavailing, and the leper colony of Moloki is simply a nightmare of horrors. There are now 1.200lepers iu the colony, and there are many cases existing in concealmeut.

It will require the exercise of the greatest caution to keep it from entering here. Iu fact, it is well nigh impossible. The truth is, we have annexed leprosy, and it is time to call a halt. We have all of the orient we net ...

THE nomination of John R. McLean to make the race for governor of Ohio is no surprise. Events for several weeks past have pointed that way, and what was foreshadowed so clearly has simply become reality. McLean is an able and progressive man and under his leadership, the success of the Ohio democracy is more thau probable. His many acts of charity in the time of their need has endeared him to a very large part of the laboring classes of the state, and especially in Cincinnati. He has always stood for the principles of democracy, and since he has been nominated there is little question that ?h: opposition which developed before the convention will rapidly melt away and he will be given the united support of the party.

IF Thomas Taggart is agaiu elected Mayor of Indianapolis he will certainly become a most formidable candidate for the gubernatorial nomina1 tion ou the democratic ticket. His administration of municipal affairs has been clean strong and progressive, and the city has developed wonderI fully under it. It meets not only with the unanimous approval of his party but is generally regarded by the people, as a whole, as very satisfactory. Mr. Bookwalter is untried, and the attitude of his party on the question of track elevation will most certainly militate against him. The friends of Taggart believe that he will be triumphantly elected and the wind seems to be blowing th-it way.

THE administration organs are coming to the reluctant and painful conclusion that the silver issue is not dead, after all. For thivc years they have confidently asserted, but with a grave-yard-whistle-intonation, that argued an ebbing courage, that silver was dead beyond the hope of resurrection. They really felt that the Democracy could not be so foolish— from their point of view—as to cling to it longer, aud to-day, they find themselves confronted by a corpse of remarkable vitality and in good fighting trim, ready for the battle. It must be settled right.

MCBAT HALSTEAD had a very interesting time in Cincinnati the other night, when in the course of a lecture on the Philipinos an anti expansionist compelled him to eat his own words by quoting from his book on the subject,

OUR treaty with the Sultan of Sulu

is a thing to be proud of. The Sultan adopts the American flag as his flag, and we accept his polygamy and the institution of slavery. Each slave is given the right to purchase his freedoin from his master for §20, and yet under that sacred document, the constitution of the Lnited States, slavery is not possible iu any laud over which waves the American flag. How can we say to slave that he shall pay $20, or even one penny, for his freedom when that is guaranteed by the constitution? The party that perpetrattd this outrage iu the name of the Americau people will surely have a sorry time explaining it away. A day of reckoning is coming.

1

MANY good things are being said of Samuel M. Ralston, of Lebauou, iu connection with the democratic race for governor. There is no question as to Mr- Ralston's standing as a democrat and a mau, or as to his ability to fill the office with honor, to himself and credit to the state. Should he become a candidate, he would make a race, strong, clean, and able, and should he be elected, his administration would lie characterized by the same very desirable qualities. He has, however, authorized the Lebanon Pioneer to say that his business interests forbid his candidacy, much to the disappointment of his friends. Possibly he may be a "receptive'' candidate.

WE are told that the farmers have never been so prosperous, that they have bountiful crops, etc. Yet the farmers have little wheat and the crops are no better thau they have averaged for several years. Prices for his products are but little higher. All this is simply a confession that the hard times have been the result of artificial interference with the natural course of trade. The stress was caused by the man behind the machine.

THE election of Judge Shackleford in the Bland district in Missouri, again demonstrates the fact that good Republican politicians are not always good prophets. There was some opposition to Shackleford in the Democratic party and upon this they were banking to work a revolution and exert a powerful influence in the next presidential campaign iu the state. But Shackleford was elected by about the usual majority, and we may expect to hear nothing more from a Republican source on the subject. They will seek new fields of prophecy.

THE proprietors of the Indianapolis News have entered suit to enjoin William H. Hart, auditor of state, from certifying the assessment of S400,000 as fixed by the state board. This is of interest inasmuch as it assesses good will and establishes a dangerour precedent. The case is, therefore, of great importance to all business in which good will is an important element in valuation.

AN excitable correspondent imagines that he has discovered a great plot on the part of John R. McLean aud his friends to defeat Bryan for the Democratic Presidential nomination and nominate McLean. That correspondent has an imagination worth a great deal of money to him. but it is not particularly valuable to truth seekers.

THE retirement of Warden Harley from the northern prison has called forth considerable adverse criticism of his conduct of the affairs of that institution. Such positions are too often regarded as "private snaps" by those who hold them. Iu such instances scandal is sure to be breathed abroad.

THE prospoct for hostilities in the Transvaal is very good. Neither Briton nor Boer has forgotten Majuba Hill, and bad blood has always existed between them. The Boer with his deadly marksmanship is a formidable enemy aud will fight to the death. If hostilities once begin it will simply meau that.

GENERAL WHEELER is reported as saying that Geueral Otis is trying to side-track him and will give him nothing to do even after repeated application. General Wheeler went out for the purpose of fighting and he proposes to fight. No march up the hill and down again for him.

THOMAS B. REED, retires from Congress ostensibly for the purpose of engaging in the practice of law. In reality he found that he is too far out of harmony with the administration to continue iu the position of party leader. There will be other chapters to the story.

THE fact that the Governors of 26 states and territories have appointed delegations to attend the conference on trusts to be held in Chicago Sept. 1:5 to 16. shows that the alarm at their spread is geueral. Their effect is so sweepiug that all classes, save the promoters are feeling the heavy pressure. Immediate action is needed.

THE towns that are not going to have street fairs this year are veiy much "agin 'em" if their papers are a reflection of public opinion. They are faithfully warning people tospend their money at home. That seems to be the roug point iu their argument. Nevertheless Crawfordsville will have a street fair, and it will be a good one.

IF all those wordy individuals who are so loudly proclaiming their loyalty to the flag and protesting against its being taken down shoul$ only enlist and demonstrate their loyalty at the frout, the war in the Philippines would not last a month.

MCKINLET loves to continue to refer to the flag in high sounding phrases thus appealing to the thoughtless. Whether the flag is right depends upon the courage and loyalty of those to whom it is entrusted.

MR. BRYAN says we got an option on the fight with the Filipinos which Spain has been waging for. 300 years, when we paid her $20,000,000. That is the fact in the case and cleverly put

GENERAL LEE iu his report strongly advocates independent government for Cuba. If anybody is in a situation to know what he is talking about it is General Lee.

JOHN R. MCLEAN is a fighter and will make the Ohio contest a memorable one. He may not be elected, but the other man will have to hustle if he is not.

M. LABORI is the "whole thing'' in the Dreyfus trial. How the antiDreyfusites must curse that assassin because he so bungled his task.

THERE are no less than three strikes on in Indiana and yet we are in the midst of a booming prosperity.

IT begins to look like talking is about over and shooting about to begin in south Africa.

SENATOR BEVERIDGE must have reached the conclusion that silence is golden.

The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages and that is catarrh, gall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cine is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood aud mucus surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building' up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials.
