FOR the past few days the Metropolitan Press has been fi^ed with interesting discussions of Fitzsimmons and Jeffeiies. For the time being the tariff and money, and the Samoau difficulties, and the war in the Philippines faded into insignificance beside the all-absorbing question as to which of these would prove himself the greater in brute strength and endurance. The more bloody and brutal the contest, the greater the appreciation of it. All over the country crowds wa'ted with bated breath to receive news of how the fight was progressing. With several thousand \ea,-s of civili sation behind us, and nineteeu centuries of Christian influence such barbarism may still be practiced aud authorities are powerless to stop them. We should, as a Christian people, either put an end to such things, or else quit boasting of our enlightenment and call ourselves plain barbarians. That Christian sentiment that falls back on dignity, and has no more action than a weak expression of moral reprobation is of no more value to the world than so much air. If the lackadaisical and milk water christian who can do no more than give "moral support" to the suppression of vice and brutality, saves himself by such, he may count himself fortunate. He will be of no more use to the world, and for all of him, it would wag its way to its doom without let or hindrance. If the proper persons should so choose prizefighting and many other such thiDgs could ba stopped.

IN the majority of counties in this state the county superintendents were re-elected. The new law destroyed competition very largely aud gave the occupants of the office an immense advantage. The law requires the holding of a living thirty-six months license, but it probably means within the county where the officer is to be elected. It is extremely doubtful whether it meant to allow an "exchange of courtesies" between superintendents of adjoining counties or between friends. The wordirg of the law is unfortunate. It does not look quite proper fo~ persons who caunot make a thirty-six months' license themselves to

the manuscript of teachers who can do so. The 3 stein of election is unfortunate, aud allows the office to fall into the hands of small bore politicians whose only qualifications for the place too often are ability .0 pull wires and "stand by their friends." Tcis is true not in one place but in many. Some change is badly needed. The office should be completely removed from politics, if such a thing is possible.

"bad nigger" is becoming so

extremely obnoxious in Georgia and other portions of the south, that it really seems necessary to adopt very drastic measures to suppress him. These low and brutal creatures that are in no sense representatives of the better element of their race, should be dealt with in the most summary manner. This not because they are negroes but because they are brutes. The white fiend who is guilty of the same crime should be dealt wi in the same manner, and be rendered forever powerless to repeat' the! offense against society. Society certainly has a right to prritect herself and is justified in adopting whatever means may be necessary to securs that end.

U'TAXES, as they are collected, are usually the heaviest upon the smallest and lightest upon thi largest revenues. No man who has an income large enough to be taxed would scarcely dare sneak behind the decision of the supreme court and say that we are not treating their edicts with proper respect. The gold standard is so simple that everyone of us can understand it and its effects. A man goes to a tailor for a suit of clothes, a shoemaker for a pair of shoes, but shall we say that we must go to our financiers for our finances? I say 'No!' They are interested too much to be just. It would be about as reasonable as employing a physician who is interested in your death. If you had a suit against a judge would you take your case before that judge for a decision?"—W. J.Bryan.

THE American Medical Association in convention at Columbus, O., adopted a resolution the otherday in which it is recommended that the standard of medical colleges be raised and recognition be given only to such as meet the requ':ements set forth in the resolution. Tbe facilities of colleges for furnishing standard instruction must be brought to the minimum requirements or they will be condemned. Suffice to say that it will no longer be possible under this system for some young ignoramuses, with out preliminary study to spend a ew months at a medical college and then go forth to prey upon the lives and fortunes of the people. A higher standard will be greatly to the advantage of both reputable physicians and the public.

BECAUSE Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana purchase does not prove that he was in favor of snatching everything in sight. That terri" tory lying contiguously it was the most natural thiDg in the world that it should be settled by Americans and become apart of the United States. It is quite another thing with the Philippine islands. They are several thousand miles away and are densely populated by an entirely different race. It would not be very difficult to say what would be Jefferson's opinion of annexing them. It would be an emphatic "no!'

THE prospect for trouble in south Africa between England and the Boers is quite promising. The Boers have made the most stubborn resistance to the encroachments of thr English, and have won the admiration and sympathy of the world by their patriotic devotion. If England really undertakes the task of whipping them, she will find it no easy task. A Boer never knows when he is whipped. 1'

REED was wholly acceptable to his party so long as he used his power to the discomfiture of democrats, but when he ventured to express an opinion at variance with the policy of the administration he was no longer useful. They are not done with Reed yet. A man of such strong personality is sure to make himself felt in one way or another.

OUB success in naval battles with Spain should not cause us to conceive the idea that our navy is invincible. Our officers in the navy realize that compared with the navies of other leading nations ours is insignificant. The present policy of the administration means that a greaitr navy is an absolute necessity. We cannot hold Eastern possessions without it.

THE investigation of the books of the county officials of Marion countv show that certain incumbents have been holding office as a private «nap. If~the matter is pushed it will certainly be rather uncomfortable for the guilty parties, and it may establish a very wholesome precedent.

ADMIRAL SOHLEY is too wise to engage in politics. He disclaims any ambition whatever to be a candidate for vice-president. The navy seems to be a pursuit which brings wisdom to the majority of its leaders. A naval battle is a small thing beside a political campaign.

IF a trust cannot pay $50 per day for doing business in Ohio, it will probably manage to get along without the patronage of that state. It is more than likely the cash will be paid by those with whom it does business.

Returning tickets will be good to leave Indianapolis to July 24th,^with a proviso that if tickets are deposited with joint agent at Indianapolis not later than July 24th, and payment of fee of 50 cents at the time of deposit, tickets may be extended to leave Indianapolis to and including August 20,1899.
