CONGRESSMAN LAXDIS will not have everything his own way when it conies to nominating a man for congress on the republican ticket. There are many fonns of prospective candidates looming darkly above the horizon. Prominent among these is Daniel Waugh, of Tipton, who twice represented the old ninth district in Congress. He is strictly a party man never kicking in the traces and is not bothered too much by ideas of his own. The boom is on and the Arcadian says: "This county is for him, and so will Hamilton county be when it comes to a show down, Clinton and Boone want him, and won't he be nominated? Now can they beat him with Tipton, Clinton, Hamilton and Boone for him All of which promises to make the political life of Congressman Landis more or less interesting in the near future. He will be a rare man who succeeds in representing this district in Congress for along series of years. There are too many men who are ambitious too, and carry with them a knife for every other man.

THE removal by President McKinley of four thousand appointments from the civil service list will meet with the hearty approval of the spoilsmen. Since the decisive action of President Cleveland in increasing the civil service list every effort has been put forth to break down the syslern. It has been attacked both in press and in congress. The law has been rendered largely inoperative by the tacit concent of persons in authority. President McKinley has inserted the opening wedge, and unless some other and stronger man is placed in the executive office, one who is able to resist the importunities of party men and bear unflinchingly the sting of the party whip, the entire system will be overthrown. It is a step backward and all good citizens who have the interest of their country at heart, and who desire to see honest and efficient public service should frown upon any such movement to destroy what has been done and administer at the polls a stern rebuke to the party attempting it.

THE mills of the gods are proverbial for the slowness of their grinding but the fineness of their product is equally famous. Leaden-footed justice has at last arrived on the scene and her sword is drawn against the persecutors of Dreyfus. From the stings of conscience some have sought escape by suicide. Esterhazy has made confession Colonel DuPaty DeClame now lies in the very cell where he tortured Dreyfus. The world will greet the news with unfeigned joy. Yet full restitution for the horrors of Devil Island can never be made. That is the pathetic side of mere human justice. The truth is mighty and the "God is great" of the pious

Mussulman can find an echo in every justice loving heart.

THE boom of Congressman Henderson, of Iowa, is growing, and may assume the formidable proportions of a western cyclone. Honors will not always go east, and, some may fall farther west than Ohio and Illinois. It is understood that Henderson is strictly in the race.

THE recent, speeches of W. J. Bryan "are mighty pleasing to the people who hear them. Many who "come to scoff remain to pray," and finally go away converted.

SENATOR BEVERIDGE is now fast convincing himself that he was wholly right in regard to the retention of the Philippines. He went for that purpose and 'twere sad, indeed, should his mission prove a failure. Doubtless he will see many things that it would be good to have, but he will learn in time that eveu nations are sometimes obliged to practice self denial. We cannot quite possess the earth.

ZOLA can now return to Paris. He dared to champion the cause of Dreyfus, even though he suffered exile and disgrace. He was not disgraced in the eyes of the world at large, but was a heroic figure. France should welcome him as one of her greatest citizens and bow her head in shame for her injustice to him. Her penances shouid be great for the Dreyfus affair.

THE story of the vast increase in the production of gold is much harped

011

by the republican press. What a shameful thing it would be should this continue and the gold dollar become a "dishonest dollar" because of the depreciation of its value through excessive supply. A pleasant predicament then would be the lot of "sound money" advocates.

MR. PEFFER asserts that when he started out on his populistic tour he was-goipg in a circle which led him back to the republican party. The erratic actions of the bewhiskered gentleman might well lead to the conclusion that he was going in a circle to an extent sufficient to render him giddy.

As

THE

time for the election of

county superintendent of schools draws near, there are some whisperings as to what will happen. There are several candidates concealed in the bushes who are making a still hunt for the place.

THE wheat crop will be poor in Montgomery county. But this is one of the garden spots where wheat and corn both never fail at the same time. The increased acreage of corn will make some compensation for the loss of the wheat.

TBE commencemeut season is at hand and the voice of the orator is heard in the land. A speedy and happy solution of all the difficult problems of society and state is at hand. So those who mourn may be comforted.

MARK HANNA is still "boss of the ranch." He is the power behind the thrown not only in Ohio politics but in the"nation as well. It is a humiliating spectacle, but we are getting quite used to that sortTof thing.

DO

fishing has become a very pop

ular sport in some places, it is said. "It is opportunity that makes the thief." The new law seems to be a flat, flat failure so far as protecting the fish is concerned.

THE Samoian skies are clearing wonderfully. The sulphurous atmosphere is drifting away, and the most interested parties are asking themselves "Well, what did we want with it anyhow?"

of the golden rule in

Ohio was of exceedingly short duration. They may try to be good in a city, but when it comes to the whole state that is entirely too much to ask.

"Nash and Cash" is the slogan the Enquirer suggests to the republican party in Ohio. Considering the way the matter now stands that war cry is eminently fitting.
