At breal:r'«rit th* other morning •Wasbin'/i-'O yunii'^ woman found a lit tie not* Hur plate saying that het aunt bad arrived from the east the night before and was at a well known hotel. About 9 o'clock she went to the hotel indicated and asked the clerk whether the newcomer had been down to breakfast yet. The clerk informed her that he did not believe she had been down and offered to send up a card. "Oh nevtjr mind doing that!" she replied "Yon just tell me the number of her room, and I will go up." Th« Poverty of Rome.

There is a terrible poverty in Rome, of which the beggars who await you at every street corner are but too genuine a Bign. The first gesture learned by the children of poor people in Rome is to hold out their hands for alms. They be gin when they are so young that they qan only totter, and they are still holding out their hands for alms when they can only totter because they are so old.

Yet another sign of it I find in the 8,000 ^abmen of Rome, sitting hungrily 'onTt£eirT)oxes, in their worirTeateri fur coats, too lazy to do anything but sit there holding out their whips to solicit every passer and unable to make a decent living even in a place so frequented by strangers and a place where every one drives. But even here, in these beggars and cabmen, is there not a certain participation, at all events, in that open air life which is the fclicity of Rome? "Abbiamo pazienza," say the poor people, and Bit in the sun.—Arthur Symons in Harper's Magazine For April

Cared Him.

An intimate friend of Rear Admiral John \V. Philip tells tho following anecdote of the gallant naval officer: Though Philip's religious side has been much emphasized and commented on, he is a determined man and will brook no opposition. Once when he was in charge of the Pacific Mail steamer China he carried two passengers of foreign nationality who persisted in smoking in their staterooms during the hours when smoking was prohibited Philip, then captain, called their attention to the fact. Irat instead of heeding his warning one answered liiui impudently Nothing farther was «hi. ut the time, but thf nest murmur the tiii'ensive. passenger was tiandcofted to ilie upper deck for three hours, and for the remainder of the trip that particular person seemed to have lout all tlt-stire to indulge in back talk to the captain

Londoners consume 275,000.000 gallons of water a year. They do not drink all of it. and what they do drirk is iot always taken clear, as they use 25. ((•(». 000 pounds of tea a.- well. They do put down 153.000,000 gallons of beer, however, as well as 4,40(1,000 galkvns of spirits, besides 50,000,000 gallons of mineral waters.

Lost! Nb man understands the full meaning of that word like the man who has been lost. He will tell you: I was in the woods going ahead steadily when I realized I'd missed the trail. With a cry of Lost!' I broke into a run heedless or ignorant of the direction I was going."

The first impulse of a man lost in the woods is to run. The only safe thing is to sit right down and reason out the position.

Sometimes a business man gets up at the usual hour, breakfasts, kisses his wife and starts for the office. He has for sometime seen signs that he was off the trail of. health. To-day the signs multiply. His brain is dull and dizzy, his heart does not beat right, his br^ithing is difficult, his limbs feel tremulous. He is scared. He realizes that he's far away from the trail of health, and suddenly like a panther from a tree, the thought leaps on him, "You are a lost man." The first impulse is to run for help, though the way is honey-combed with pitfalls of quackery. But the rational man faces the facts, sits down and thinks over the position and its probabilities.

That is the man we want to talk to. Disease in almost any form is generally accompanied by the failure of the organs of digestion and nutrition. Reestablish these organs in healthy action, the blood is at once enriched, the body nourished and the general health restored. This result is invariably accomplished by Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. It is a stomach-gtrength-
