IT is quite consoling to the average laudsman to know that "Fighting Bob" Evans was sea sick while on Lake Erie the other day. Misery finds companionship desirable, always.
THE. effort of Andrew Carnegie to attone by one great good deed for many little evil ones does not. meet with so ready and appreciative a sympathy from many quarters as he may have expected. He will have to wait that he may reap his full reward of 'nothing except good of the dead.
THE reception accorded to General Wheeler at Charleston would indicate that the record made by him in the late Spanish difficulty has further endeared him to the people of the South. He is a typical representative of Southern chivalry, and his heroism appeals to every man, North or South.
THE Cuban army consists of about fifty thousand men, only half of whom are privates. Well officered, certainly. The Kentucky Colonel has found a formidable rival in Cuba. A couple of decades will kindly transform them all in to officers and there will be no memory of the humble private.
IT has been di-covered that Senator Mark Hanna is the largest owner of etock in the great ship building trust This is not a strange coincidence, only a compromising circumstance. When good things are leing passed around it is safe to say that the Ohio Senator will not be left in the deal.
THERE area good many politicians who think they are capable of filling Reed's place as speaker. They seem to have forgotten that since the adop tion of the constitution there has been but one Reed. He is not without faults to be sure, some of them glaring ones, but not every man can fill the place so well.
JOHM SHERMAN*cheerfully announces that he is not done with politics out proposes to be a quantity still in Ohio's political complications. He was taken from the Senate, dropped out of the cabinet, and then his obituary was written, and still he ''will not down." There are so many great men now in Ohio that they are getting over the line into other states, and by the way Indiana has one for her junior Sen" ator.
IF men do not represent principles it profits the average citizen little as to what individual may hold office. If a political campaign degenerates into a mere scramble for place and profit, then we have fallen upon evil days, indeed. It is not an uncommon thing to hear men prating about their loyalty to principles which they neither comdrehend nor attempt to follow when elected to office. Such fellows should be delegated to the rear and suppressed so vigorously that ihey will not1 reach the front again until they haye absorbed soma

new ideas.
The trusts must go. The Republican press is now declaring pretty generally that trusts are an evil thing and must be destroyed. When such a discovery as that is made, and such a declaration follows, there can be no question as to the result. When the G. O. P. finds an evil thing it goes after it at once. As a destroyer of evil things it is unrivaled. The only strange thing is that it did not discover these things before. But theu, possibly its hands were so full "protecting the interests of the working man" that it had no time to investigate the true character of these apparently harmless creatures of capital. Otherwise they had certainly been destroyed.
ANDREW CARNEGIE predicts that President McKinley will be compelled to get back to American traditions before he will be able to face a national convention. The feeling against tha present expansion policy among so many prominent leaders of the party, Mr. Carnegie thinks, will necessitate a retreat and that a resemblance of a protectorate will be set up in order that the president may pose as having settled the Philippine question. The question of maintaining a large standing army in the east for the purpose of holding possession there is such a radical departure from the traditions of our government that the people will long hesitate before adopting such a policy. The genius of our country's institutions demands something entirely different in character.
THE report that the FilipiAos are willing to accept any terms of peace if true, is glad tidings. Peace cannot come too soon, if on honorable terms. Whatever may be the varying opinions concerns the policy pursued by this government in the Philippines, when it comes to this there can be but oue. Every true American desires to see American arms triumphant when it is necessary for them to be borne in battle, but no true American desires to see them taken up lightly. War is a bane-a menace to a republic, while peace is its chiefest blessing. Freedom may be secured by arms but by arms it may not be retained. Its perpetuation depends upen something higher than mere force. That lies in the spirit for freedom which prevails among the people themselves,
Beware of Ointments for Catarrh! that Contain Mercury, as mercry will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system wben entering it through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used except on prescriptions from reputable physicians, as the damage they will do is ten told to the good you can possibly derive from them. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney fc Co., Toledo, O., contains no mercry, and is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. In buying Hall's Catarrh Cure be sure you get the genuine. It is^ taken internally and made in Toledo", Ohio, by F. Cheney & Co. Testimonials free.

Visited the Home of the Octopus. Fleming T. Luse returned yesterday from a visit of some days to his old home at Anderson. This is his first visit there for ten years, and that decade has made wonderful changes in the old town. From a town of four thousand it hag grown to a city of 25,000 with street cars running in all directions over paved streets, bordered with fine residences. He was taken out to the factory district and saw the octopus spit nails and blow glass, chew up wood and weave pa per, melt iron aud turn shovels. His description of Anderson's business enterprise would make Crawfordsville's idle capital green with envy. The Anderson Bulletin started a few years since on a capital of twenty dollars, now has a plant equipped with perfecting press which handles three miles of paper at one loading, six other presses, a merganthaler type casting machine, the whole plant valued at $40,000. Mr. Luse is very much astonished at the growth of Anderson. ..

Child Scalded.f'
The infant child of Charles Suiters and wife was badly scalded by falling into a boiler of hot water on Friday a'ternoon. Mrs. Suiters had been doing the washing and had set the boiler off the stove onto the floor. The child climbed over it and fell in. It would possibly have meta quick death had not its mother been near enough at hand to hear its cries. The family reside on Lincoln avenue, off Grant avenue south.
Odd Fellows Win.
The celebrated Odd Fellows' graveyard case tried in the Montgomery circuit ccurt a few weeks ago, and was appealed, was decided in the Supreme Court yesterday. The judgment of the lower court was affirmed. The Odd Fellows hold their property and it will not be surrounded by the corporation line of the town.

Effects of Expansion.
The Philippine insurrection, our republican friends admit, is having a decided influence on the price of bin der twine. Manilla twine sells for 13 cents this year. All the raw mate rial comes from these islands, and the war has stopped all exports.
Kicked by a Horse.
While shoeing a vicious horse yes terday afternoon Walter Cool man, the blacksmith, was kicked on the knee and painfully injured. No bones were broken, but the young man will walk with the aid of a cane for a few days.,
