"HONESTY is the best policy"—in everything save politics. An honest mac in a crowd of professional politicians lasts about as long as a snowflake in Sheol.
THE
people of Montgomery "county
despise a boodler. There are enough honest men yet left to see that jobbers and self-convicted plunderers are left out of office hereafter.
AN honest man is the noblest work of God," but he is so rare that the small bore politician scarcely ever takes him into his calculations. But when he finds him, he is painfully surprised.

WE have been writing a good many editorials on the Philppine question of late, because we thought it was a great question. But we have discovered a band of Filippinos, treacherous and blood thirsty, closer home, who will claim our attention.

Sunday.
The council has shorn him of his power. It is now in the hands of the Police Board. These are the facts in the case. If saloons run open on Sunday lay in complaints to the Police Board, not the Mayor.
THE spirit of Democracy is to do the right to recognize the truth,
110
mat
ter from whence it conies to stand for the people as against corporate power to lessen the burdens of taxation. It is not the spirit of eternal opposition which some of its ignorant interpreterus place upon it in these latter days, who lose sight of honesty and the public welfare to oppose the other fellow. "V,
who is for sale himself al
ways imagines that every other man is for sale. Sometimes he is fooled in his man to his own sorrow and undoing. Every man will [not sell out. It is not every man who will betray his trust. Men can still be found who will not defend and uphold wrongdoing who will refuse to uphold wrong in his own family or political party, or church. Once in awhile the boodler runs up against one of those and finds him to be about the real old thing. Then what?
THE

leading papers of the South do
not excuse the brutality in the lynching of the negro Hose. Even the greater number which have discussed the matter editorially uphold the law. The hideous crime of the negro unquestionably merited the punishment of death, but the ferocity and the iiendishness of his taking off by the mob has no excuse in aChristi-vn community. Such breaking out of primal savagery may make one question whether we have traveled
30
far on
the road to an ideal civilization, as we sometimes flatter oureelvea The at* titude of the press will be the most powerful means for bringing about a change in the right direction.
Admiral Kautz has offended
the president by his letter in which he told his cousin that he was "not a King here, but just a plain boss of the ranch." Plain living has always been the lot of these old sea-dogs, but when it comes to plain speaking as well the line must be drawn. When it comes to firing shots from their ship's guns, they make an impression, and their speech seems in recent times to be equally effective. Auother class of people are hurt however, and therein lies the difference. A discreet and dignified silence is the only thing allowable to an Admiral. Admiral Koutz and Captain Coghlan form a distinguished company.
MAN
is not necessarily a traitor to
his country because he questions the wisdom of the policy pursued by the administration in regard to the Philippines. It is stated by somenewspapers that there are men in this country who actually desire the defeat of the American soldiers. Such an insinuation is a mortal insult to any American. There might possibly be a few such, with warped and distorted intellects who have more mouth than brains, and more bile than patriotism. But the average citizen is for America, right or wrong, against the world, and will fight for her and die for her, a thousand times over, if necessary. He only exercises his privilege as a free American when he discusses a national policy. His loyalty to country, is not necessarily brough into question by that, as some pretend to believe.
DAVIS KNOWS.
The editors of the Crawfordsville Review and the Argus-News are now questioning the true Democracy of each other. Neither of them has any to spare.—Newport Hoosier State.
The best critic in the world is the fellow who is the most ignorant of that which he criticizes. If there is any man on the planet who is densely ignorant of what Democracy is, that man is the editor of the Hoosier ^State. He is a Republican, not because he understands Republican principles, but because Vermillion county is Republican and all the politicians are afraid of his dirty pen, and he continues to have things his own way. There is never a principle advocated by his paper. He neither knows, nor cares what his party advocates, and outside of how to work wires he is a profound ignoramus. Of course such a man is capable of passing judgment on Democracy, or anything else involving principle.
As was anticipated, the jury trying Mrs. George for the slaying of Saxton, at Canton, Ohio, returned a verdict of acquittal. There was possibly but little doubt of her guilt, yet the public and the court and the jury had no sympathy down in their deepest hearts for the seducer of a wife, the man who ruined a home. There is a sort of unwritten law among men that the debauclier of a home shall die,and His slayer go acquit. Saxton may nave been highly connected, wealthy, but his criminal instincts led him to betray his neighbor's wife. It does
110
good to argue that she was equally guilty with him. We do not know the inside history of this tragedy there is another and darker page than that which tells of the shooting of Saxton, by the woman whose honor he stole, whose home he broke up, and whose children he put to shame. Eternal justice may have demanded the life of the woman, but infinite belief in the sacredness of home and fireside, and the sacred right of defense of character let her go acquit.
THE meeting on Thursday evening for the purpose of devising ways and means for assisting Wabash College in introducing co-ordinate education should be well attended. She is doing a grand work as is attested by her alumni who are discharging creditably duties of citizens in all walks of life, public and private. A prejudice exists among some people against the college owing to the conduct of a few silly young fellows, who to her misfortune, are at times enrolled among her students. They cause unfavorable comment, whil« the great body of quiet and orderly young men who are working earnestly and faithfully to fit themselves for careers of usefulness are over-looked. She should not be held responsible for the fact that fortune has endowed some youthful members of the genus homo with more money than brains, and that they choose to sometimes act in a very silly manner in public. She is not able to convert the auricular appendage of a female of the porcine species into a silken receptacle for the coia of the realm. Don't hold her responsible for fools who are
born, not made, but give her credit for the work she has done, and lend her all possible encouragement and your efforts will be doubly rewarded. Attend the meeting. Help Wabash College and help the town and help yourself.

ADAM HANNA BEND, IND., April 27, '99 MY Deah COL:— Youh lettah of the 22nd instant was a great relief to my ovahbuhdend heart, sah, to know that othah great men have troubles as well as myself, sah. No man evah had a hahdah time than I have had, sah. I had made myself excruciatingly obnoxious to the yawping, free silvah crowd, sah, and they rub it in on me to beat the band, sah. I was between the devil and the deep blue sea, sah. I was swohn to gold, sah, and undahtook to run the county convention, sah, but an iguorant, long-haired yokel from one of the out townshipssah, made a speech which carried the convention off its feet, sah, and ovah the protests of my scholahly friend from^Gerogah, sah, a complimentahy resolution for mistah Cleveland was knocked sky high, sah. They were as a mob of stohm scared Texas steers, sah. In their madness they turned the picture of Cleveland to the wall, sah, and metaphorically they trampled all ovah my sacred carcass, sah. I was awful angry, mad sah, mad. I denounced them to my friend, Col. Bottlewringer, in my best style, sah, and they glared at me with suspicious eyes, sah. The Colonel remarked: "You're a blamed fool, sah." I felt the force of his remark, sah, and aftah a nights reflection, I felt very much like one, sah. I came down town and engaged in a curbstone conversation with my bosom friend Capt. Crispin, who had gotten into the push before the cyclone came, sah, and who wants to be Sheriff of the county, sah, and be showed me where it was dollars with me in his company, to where it would be doughnuts with Cleveland, sah. So I prepared to eat my dish of that vile and carrion bird, vulgahly called crow, sah, but which undah ordinahry conditions I scohn to mention, sah. It choked me, sah. It sickened me, sah. It hurt me, sail, but it went down, sah. It has stayed thah for several months, sah," and yet the illeffects come up occasionally, sah, when some scoundrel brings forth my uttahances and produces them befoh the public, sah. As soon a-- I heard from Chicago I knew thac Captain Crispin was right. He is a politician from way back, sah, with a head longah than a pump handle sah, so I followed the Captain and crawled down from my gilded perch, sah, bounded upon the band wagon, and they put me to playing the ORGAN, sah. I am still playing it sah, and waiting for the things which are deferred and maketh the heart sick, sah I still believe that Cleveland is the greatest man in the world with one notable exception, Gen. Robert
E.
Lee, sah, and that the gold standard is the best doctrine, except, look out for your own self, sah. I have adopted the lattah as my fnotto, sah, and am looking aftah myself, sah, and being careful indeed to claim everything in sight, whethah I get it or not, sah. A great many believe that it was me, sah, who first discovered 16 to 1 sah, and I take care that all my uttahances tend to prove my assertions, sah. Yet many are very doubtful about it yet, sah. I am great on making assertions, sah, and Hew to the line Let the chips fall where they may, sah. I'm in it for myself, sah, principle to the foh winds sah. I hope to heah from you soon again my Deah Col. .7 Yours in Pain,

The County Districts.
The commissioners met in special session yesterday to district the county under the new law providing for a county council. The county is divided tuto four districts, with no divisions o^ townships. In this case Union township being the biggest thing of the sort in the state, kept us from having a fair divide. The commissioners under the law could not cut it in two, so they made a district out of it. The districts as they stand now are:
First—Coal Creek, Wayne and Ripley. Second—Brown,'Scott and Clark.
Third—Madison, Sugar Creek, Walnut and Franklin, FourthUnion.
It now becomes the duty of Judge West to appoint the county council, which he will proceed to do in a fewdays. There are not a great many candidates for the position, as it is mostly glory one gets out of it. This is one office where the spoils do not appear on the surface. A way may be discovered later on to beat the combination, but until he figures it out the professional politician and officeseeker will confine himself to pastures upon which he has grazed before.
Had a Battle.
According to announcements made before their discharge, the members of Co. C, of Lafayette, are proceeding to thump one by one the adherents of Captain Marks. They found one of them Saturday and pounded him up in regular slugger style, and it will probably continue until all have been dressed down as these irritated young Filippinos think proper. The bad blood between the Captain and his men is deplorable. It has been a disgrace to Indiana soldiery throughout the past year, and will probably continue until someone is killed. The boys seem vicious in their resentment, refusing to come home on the same train or over the same road with the Captain. The authorities should take the matter in hand and quell the irrepressibles before someone is killed and another stain added to Co. and its unpopular officer.\ "T
The Kellers Again.
The Kellers will come into public view again to-day in the Fountain circuit court, at Covington. This is a $50,000 damage suit filed by Maggie LaHoe, once Maggie Keller against Geo. V. Thomas and other citizens of Wolf creek falls vicinity, who took an active part in the attempt to bring to justice the murderers of Clara Shanks. The Kellers, Maggie and George and wife were arrested and tried, and acquitted. This suit is brought by Maggie for defamation of character. It has been in the courts for some time.
