JOHN P. ALTOELDT.

«'E. Vigilance" Writes of the Defeated

Candidate for flayor of Chicago.

EDITOR MORNING REVIEW:

There are not many true Democrats who really know John P. Altgelt, that share in the opinion expressed by you in yesterday's issue. I have known him personally for several years, have read his state papers and speeches with pleasure and entire approval, and have watched his course in public affairs with admiration for his high courage and steadfastness to the principles of Jefifersonian Democracy.

His career has been a most honorable one. He entered the government service a private at the beginning of the civil war, and rose, without the help of any political pull to the command of a regiment. At the close of the civil war, he engaged in mercantile pursuits and achieved a fortune. His high abilities and the esteem and confidence of his fellow-citizens made him Governor of Illinois. Had he chosen to prostitute his high office, by making it the adjunct to the powers that are wresting from the people the rights conferred by the Constitution, he might now be enjoying such ease as his conscience would allow him, and the plenty which the plutocracy showers upon those who yield up their principles, and put their talents at the disposal of their masters. He has chosen instead to dare "the boisterous sea of liberty" of which Jefferson speaks. He would rather lie the vgaunt, starved wolf, standing free ,upon the wind-swept hill, than lie a fat, sleek, submissive dog dozing in the sunshine that falls on the rich man's porch— a recipient of alternate caresses and kicks. When the issue, between the people and the plutocrats came, he was found on the "firing line" of the people's battallions, and there he will be found so long as there is breath in his body. He has never sought an office, but in answer to the cry of the people, who were beng wronged. His enemies constantly represent him as a noisy, fussy demagogue with atavistic ideas, who is eaten up with hunger for office. They call him "anarchist", "crank" and etc., and hound him as though he were a mad dog. They never explain, however, why, if he be 6imply a selfseeker, they could not find use for his talents and personality? The

Democratic party has furnished plenty of Clevelands, Belmonts and Bynums, for the plutocrat's market. Why can they not buy Algeldt? Boundless as their wealth is, they can not do it, and they know it.

During the late compaign in the city of Chicago John P. Altgeldt said that Carter Harrison was

betraying

the Democratic party into the hands of their enemies, and this was the reason that he withstood him. It seems that there are 40,00() voters in the city who believe that statement to be true. In an interview arcoi\led the next day after the election Mr. Harrison made the statement that he is "a Democratonly in national matters?" To the average individual this seems a queer sort of democrat. Does he mean a national Democrat after the Simon Bolivar Bucknor type?

If he'scans the movements of cor-

Many a woman throws away the flower of her youth—her beauty, her amiability and her capacity for wifehood and motherhood— without realizing it. There is no sadder sight than that of a young woman who has for years been bearing up bravely and silently under physical tortures that would drive a man to the mad-house.

Thousands of women suffer in this way and ask neither aid nor sympathy. They realize that they are the victims of weakness and disease of the distinctly womanly organism. They do not consult a physician because of the well-founded fear that he will insist upon disgusting "examinations" and "local treatment." Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription does away with all necessity for these ordeals. It cures in the privacy of the home. It restores health and strength and vigor to the delicate organs concerned in wifehood and motherhood. It tones, invigorates and builds up the nerves and transforms nervous, overwrought,_ sickly invalids into healthy, happy wives and mothers. Dr. Pierce is an eminent and skillful specialist who has been for thirty years chief consulting physician to the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute, at Buffalo, N. Y. He will answer, without charge, all letters from ailing worn-

tain currents in the affairs of the party just now he will see indications of a flowing toward a certain point. What of the invitation to a mix-up with the New York renegades sent to Bryan by Mr. Belmont, whereby it was expected that the rank and file would be made to believe that an understanding had been patched up and that the cause would be betrayed as usual, which, of course, would disorganize the Chicago platform democracy and throw them under the spell of the same old crowd.

What of the yell that is being raised in this state for a certain man for governor whose intimates and familiars are all of the gold stripe, and who could not swear fealty to the Chicago platform without being suspected of perjury by all who know him. Many of us remember with humiliation and pain the praise and adoration we lavished upon the Stuffed Prophet of Buzzard's Bay. Let us not repeat the error by rushing to the defence of Carter Harrison against all opposers. On the contrary keep an eye upon him. The man that John P. Altgelt charges with treason, must be watched. 0

E. VIGILANCE.

An Awful Warning.

The late disastrous explosion of dynamite in Coal Creek township, in which the family of John Carrington lost two of its members, should be an awful warning to those who find it necessary in their business to use high explosives of any sort, gunpowder, dynamite or nitro glycerine not to do so in a careless manner. These things will "go off" and do it without any warning. Last week Rice Kline, of Wayne township, attempted to thaw out a lot of the stuff 011 a fire in the field where he was at work. The stuff exploded and carried the kettle into the next county, and jarred two farm hands until they did not know who they were for some time, and then on Friday followed the terrible affair in Coal Creek township. These things are pregnant with warning to all handlers of explosives. A prominent contractor, who uses much of the stuff in his work, remarked last night that he had learned something. That he had before now put fifteen pounds of it in his room under the bed, but never so long as he lived would he do it again. But these things are soon forgotten, and, like the the unloaded gun come periodically to the front.

Kicker Jailed.

Jim Morgan who is employed at W. O. Smith's livery stable, allowed his usually mild and equable temper to get the best of him Saturday evening, and worked up a misunderstanding with a boy named Jeffries. The irascible James threw the boy down and administered to him several vigorous kicks 011 various portions of his anatomy. Officer McCoy was called and proceeded to take James in taw. It required some persuasion to do the act, but the officer arose nobly to the occasion, and a few cuffs and well directed and pointed threats induced the brave boy whipper to accompany the "copper" to the Hotel Cani?ie. Jim tried to work tlie "boss" at the stable to go his bond, but that worthy gentleman was leer}-, evidently having been "worked" before, so Jim took his meals with the Sheriff until this morning, when Mayor Elmore will settle with the offender.

Bad on Bicycles.

Many bicycle tires are being paralyzed here of late from some mysterious cause. It has been discovered what the cause of the trouble is. The refused clippings from the cresting works hauled on wagons through the streets jolt off and the stars and acorns puncture wheels as neatly as tacks There is quite a roar among the wheelmen over it.

To Graduate.

There were eighteen pupils of the public schools of Union township who passed the examination for graduation in the month of March. Fifteen successfully passed the seventh year test in geography. On next Saturday, April 15. at the Fiskville school house the final examination of the year will be held.

Coming Back.

Harry S. Wilson, present U. S. Miuister to Chile, in a letter to friends here expresses the determination to return to Crawfordsville to reside permanently at the expiration of his term of office,

Taxes Due.

Monday April 17 is the last day to pay city taxes without the penalty, and the 1st of May is the last day for county tax payment. Keep these dates in mind, and call at the Captain's office in time.

man visited

New Ross, and was surprised at the evidences of growth and "boom" which met his attention. There have been several business changes there during the past year, and everybody seems to be pushing for the town.

We noticed that E. M. Graves is back in the drug store again after a year spent on the farm, his predecessor, Wm. Joseph, having moved to Advance. TV

One of the most important business changes noted is the purchase of the Whitney hardware stock by A. W. Smith, of Terre Haute, formerly traveling man for a large Chicago concern. He is proposing to push the business as far as possible. Theodore Hankins, the funeral director, is still in his old stand, and is one of the established features of New Uoss. W. Z. Shellj* and L. E. Heath conduct one of the nicest, cleanest blacksmith shops in' the country, having commenced business in March. They are both experienced men.

Mrs. Martha Heath leased the Weaver building one year ago and opened up a dollar a day hotel against the advice of the knowing ones, but she has made it a success with the traveling public.

November last another new enterprise dropped into New Ross. D. C. Eckert, of Logansport, opened up a new cash grocery which to-day is one of the features of the town.

Dr. Bronaugh occupies the old stand where he has been for fifteen years actively practicing his profession and incidentally looking after a farm of 187 acres. He has made a great success at New Ross, and is one of the town boomers.

In the manufacturing line the lumber business is first. E. R. Richmond is now sole owner of the saw mill, and gives it his undivided attention. He is dealing in hardwood lumber, soft lumber and shingles.

C. H. Kivett has been in the grocery business there for more than two years. He is a careful business man and enjoys a large trade.

Mr. Robert Bratton isk the New Ross fine stock raiser. For 22 years he has been engaged in breeding Poland China hogs and bronze turkeys. His stock is shipped to every part of the country, and he is called as judge in fine swine and poultry shows to distant states.

Coddington & Harris, the builders, are entering upon their tenth year, and they report better prospects for building this year than for a long time. These men are skilled in their line and when they say "boom" that is what it means. 1

Miss Debbie Schutt has been in the millinery business since March, succeeding Mrs. A. H. Miller. Miss Schutt is an artist in her line, and is rapidly forging to the front.

Mclntyre A: Rains have been in the hardware business for a year. Their machine room is 80x30 feet and separate from the store proper. They have sold up to this time a car load of binders and mowers.

Tom Bronaugh's drug store, Joe Boohers tile and brick factory are concerns of 110 small importance to the town. J. E. Norman has been in the blacksmithing business for ten years and commands a large patronage. He employs a regular wood worker and repairs everything. Ed Inlow operates a large livery and sale stable. He has been in business three years' and has doubled his trade this year.

Isaac Sperry buys and ships stock and is associated in the elevator business with J. A. Morrison. The elevator is one year old and is doing a good business. Morrison, Ronk & Co. carry a large stock of dry goods, boots, shoes and general merchandise on 2,000 feet of floor space. They are doing their part of the booming.

There will be a new school building erected this summer. The new Pythian Castle Hall, a two story brick, will also be built. Many new residences which will 1*? an ornament to the town will go up during the season. New Ross road to prosperity.
