FROM SAN JUAN.
nahlon Hanson Writes Interesting
Letters to Home Folks.
SAN JUAN, PORTO RICO, Feb. 28, '99. DEAR MOTHER AND FATHER:— I am here on detached service this time, but we pull out this afternoon or to-morrow for Ponce. There were ton privates, two non-coms and a lieutenant detached in Ponce to bring seven prisoners over here and I happened to be one of them. We landed them here yesterday morning after traveling four days on the road, the same way we came before.
Well I am having a fine time and feel fine. This is not a bad country at all at this season of the year.
The prisoners were six natives and one Spaniard. They had been robbing and burning plantations during the war.
I went through Morro Castle and the San Carlos fortifications yesterday
ind pulled a piece of rock off of each
Clarence Stone of Clinton is visit- place. I saw the watch tower where a man was killed. There was still a trace of blood on the stone. I will close now as it is almost dinner time.
Another under date of March 4th, '99 says Well I am back in Ponce once more after being away eight days. I havn't received any mail from you yet, and think it is about time I am hearing from you. I did not have time the day I wrote in San Juan to tell you much about Morro Castle, so I will finish in this letter. San Carlos and Morro are the only forts in San Juan, although the whole city is surrounded by fortification.
There are tunnels in Morro that lead two miles out of the city, and the dungeons are something horrible.
Minstrels at Veedersburg. About sixty Crawfordsville people braved the storm and accompanied the College Minstrels to Veedersburg on Saturday. The rain was something fearful, but despite that fact they had a fair house. The show was strictly up to the standard and met the expectations of the Veedersburg people and won new laurels for the organization. The disagreeable weather kept many away who had made arrangements to be present. They invite the boys back under more favorable circumstances.
No Better Place.
The Indiana Academy of Science will meet this spring at Crawfordsville instead of Terre Haute. The Normal has already asked for the meeting next spring and will probably get it. —Terre Haute Gazette.
There could be found no better place than Crawfordsville for a meeting of a learned society. The atmosphere is one of learning, and there is no reason why such a meeting should not be eminently successful.
A New Sect.
Anderson has been the birthplace of several unique religious sects, and now conies another. It is to be called the Christian Alliance and is founded by Rev.'G. N. Eldridge and wife. Mr. Eldridge was former pastor of Methodist churches at Fort Wayne ami Anderson, but has withdrawn from the conference. His plan is to "preach religion in the old way" he says.
