THE PEERLESS PREACHER.

The Subject of the Sermon of Dr. Brumbaugh Sunday Horning. At the First M. E. church Sunday morning thc theme of the minister, E. H. Brumbaugh, was "The Peerless Preacher." Text John 7:46. "Never man

spake

like this man." After speak

ing of the time, place and circumstances calling forth this utterance ol the officers sent to arrest Jesus, the preacher called attention to some of the characteristics of Christ's preaching. He spake as one who had authority. Scribes, rpbbis, doctors, did not speak for themselves. "They quoted. They were mere echoes. Their authority was Moses and the prophets. Jesus could disagree with Moses. He declared, "I say unto you." Men were impressed. They marveled as they studied him. They do still study him and marvel, for he spake not as men. Men deliver their word, impress a few for a time but their pupils soon outgrow them,—soon go beyond them. The old philosophers and the old reformers have have all been outgrown and the new ones will be. But the philosophy of Jesus as given in the Sermon on the Mount and elsewhere is still in advance of the times. Jesus, by his life, spake as never man spake. He repented not of sin for he had

110

sin to repent of. He wept for sins but for the sins of others. He did always the things that pleased his father and no man convinced him of sin. He alone could say,—-"I am the way.' Never man spake by his works as did Jesus. These were as astonishing as his words. The healed sick .the cleansed lepers, the restored blind, the raised dead were all witnesses to the truth that he was the "teacher come from God." So his fame spread abroad. His enemies were confounded. He rested his claims upon his works. Others performed miracles, but lie alone in his own name. Only Jesus could declare, "I say unto thee arise." Never man spake by his death as did Jesus. Other martyrs sealed their testimony with their blood but not as this man did. For other prophets to die meant the close of their work on earth. He, however, predicts his death, prepares for it, builds upon it. His word is, "And I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto me." He sets aside the passover as the Lord of ceremonies and substitutes a new feast, the sacrament of his own body and and blood. He changes.the ignominy of the cross to glory and transforms his persecutors into glad heralds to carry the hated emblem into earths darkest region shouting, "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of Christ." He still speaks as never man speaks. He puts himself at the head of the only world religion, chose the whole world as the subject of redeption and is yet the most potent arbiter of the affairs of men, and will speak on, and on until all the king lom^ of this world as well as the hosts of heaven shall crown him Lord of all.
