THE REVIEW GO.

HE FINDS THE PLACES.

The friends of H«nley, the Lafayette itateema', no* working rnergetically for the office of U. S. Senator at the hands of the legislature, asserts that he remembert his friends by always providing them with some or other salaried positions. This is a devil of a qualification .is the main requisite for the high and important office of U. S. Senator* On that grouud alone, if nothing else was in evidence, the man should be defeated. He seemingly has not ar qualification for the position he seeks. He is doubtless a spoilsman, and has no higher instincts in political life. His henchmen are his "friends" for this reason onl he will reward them with places. As for a law-maker and having attributes of a statesman Hanley is a cipher. However most of his friends for the position are of the same breed, and Indiana for the ensuing six years will have a Senator such as 6he has not known of for many long years—a spoilsman, with nothing of the instincts of a statesman, but occupying the position solely for the money there is in it or the rewards to be paid to friends.

NOMINATING HARRISON.

Reports from Indianapolis last week intimated that sixteen democratic members of the legislature would unite with a number of republican members, and choose ex-President Harrison for U. S. Senator. This is very doubtful. Democratic members would assuredly not make such a ridiculous exhibition of themselves. While the candidates of the republicans for Senator is mostly composed of verj doty and unfit matetyl, democratic members while ttiey are in the minority should keep hands off. As the majority make their bed so should they lie. The opposition should not aid them one way or another. It is true that Harrison is really the only tit person suitable for the place yet mentioned, but if the party cannot tind it out, it is not the place of democratic members to inform tnern.

BY POPULAR VOTE.

Over twenty years ago Gov. Morton argued in favor of the election of the United States Senators by popular vote, instead of by the nincumpoops sent every two ears to Indianapolis who perform. the duty when necessary. Morton's view as the years come and go prove to have been the correct one Look at the dirty scramble now going on at Indianapolis among a number of cheap politicians as to whom the honor of United States Senator shall be given. A much better selection we believe would be made could the voters throughout the State have the disposition of it. Very poor material is put l'orth to select a Senator from at this time, and had the people anything to say in the matter about all of it would be cast aside. Hanley, Poae.\, Steele Beveridge, Tayior! Wnat a galaxy of niediocres.

STATE LEGISLATURE.

The State legislature convenes at Indianapolis nevt Thursday. As an evidence of the ravishingjhunger for office it is said that there are fully 500 applicants among the republicans, which parly has the control, for positions of clerks, door-keepers, etc., which the legislature hae to give, and fully 25 per cent, of them are from Indianapolis.

IlKruBi.iCAN friends

of

Gen. Wal

lace are suggesting his name for the position of Embassador to Russia. The General is probably a "receptive" candidate for the place, that is he will take the place if they will give it to him. Since he

got

slaughtered two years ago

in the State legislature for Senator, he is no longer an aggressive candidate for anything, just simply "receptive."

Wanted-At tho Argus-News office an organ, by an amateur. Address, ''C" at office.

SHERMAN OPPOSED IT. Hx-Seuator John Sherman, of Ohio. in a ipeent interview taid coiictriiin^ the late Spanish war ami matters reUtto it: "I tried to prevent this foolish »it (. with !»pnin. Pifsid-Mit McKiriley will ted Mni that 1 coulii bhve prow ou-d i\ Ah a matter of fact, negotiations »vrr already in progress to puichaee Cubit from Spain when thn w«r feeling suddenly rose and f.*ept everything tufore it. And Spain would have accepted the terms. "This is a maitor of BPcret history. And now what have we got to show for all this expense? Some islands in tie Philippines, for instance, which are wtrth about $203,000 per annum income ncreased indebtedness of 1200, 000,000, and a lot of islands inhabited mainly by man-eatere."

Mr. Sherman is no longer the import ant factor in the republican party that he once was, but his observations here quoted came with the force of convic tion. The income, for instance, in the way of trade ia about $200,000 pet year from the Philippine islands. What will be the outgo paid by this government in maintaining a 6tanJing army of 50,000 men. besides keeping numerous war vessels there. net as soon as possible the government will be wise id letting goof the Philippine islands. The government ha9 done enough now for a while "in the interest of humanity,'' and should let up on the movement.

ANTI-EXPANSION.

Am jng such republican leaders ae, Hoar, Speaker Re9d, ex-Sen itor Sherman, Carnegie, and other?, there is a decided outspoken opposition to the annexation of the Philippine islands as desired by President McKinley and those under him. Very many prominent republicans are anti-expansionists a'jd in the campaigo of 1900 thia bids fair to be a leading issue. The democracy very generally will be opposed to the expansion busiueseand will have tbe company of many distinguished persons in opposition to it. Tho expansion people, those favoring the annexation 8,000,000 of barbarians and giving them equal privileges with the citizens of this coun trp, are going to have an enormous undertaking in securing the support of a nujority of this poople for the movement.

I.v a tour of Georgia last week Presi dent McKinley wore during a portion of his journey a confederate baiiyf. Where is the loyal Major Charles W. Travis that he does not denounce this open exhibition of dis!o\alty through the columns of the Crawfordsville Journal? No doubt he will so'soon as he learns of it.

There is more Catarrh in this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and ustil the last few years was supposed to be incurable, For a gre^t many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable, Science hae proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by P. J. Cheney A: Co., Toledo, Ohio, ia the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally in doses from lO drops to a teaepoonfui. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails to eure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address.
