THE EXPANSION IDEA.
A year ago no one would have thought of this country possessing any of the islands of the Pacific ocean or those borderirg on the Carribean sea. Today we have possessions there and there are many who greath favor the idea It is anew situation to be in for this country, and one, we believe, that is not for the best. Our position on the Monroe doctrine must undergo a change, and the great foreign powers hereafter will give little heed or pay little attention to our wishes in this matter. We are becoming aggressive, are extending our power to countries of this continent, why not England, Russia oo Germany do the same with small islands or provinces on this continent when an opportunity is presented to do to. Where any one can 6ee any ultimate benefit in the possession of the Philippine islands is yet to be explained and demonstrated. Considerine the enormous expense of a standing army from this country to be maintained in the Phili pine islands from year to year, then deduct the commercial advantages to bo derived from them and it will be found, we believe, that the sooner we dispose of them and withdraw our army the better. The question of their permanent possession will soon be an important one in the political field.
SCHOOL DISCUSSION.
There bids fair to be a rather lively fight between the State and non-State educational institutions at the next session of the legislature. There is no doubt of it that the tax payers of Indiana are paj ins? entirely too much now for educational purposes, our schools and colleges require too much money to run them, and if the discussion now going on may et lighten the legiblatur.j to this fact it may result in a reduction of expanses, a lopping off of this or that cost, and in the end be a great saving to the people. The people should not be taxed for the education cf the rising generations beyond the common schools or free schools as they :.re termed. Why they should be compelled to pay out money for the Bloomicgton University, Purdue or State Normal, has never been truly or honorably explained. If the State should support by taxation the State Normal, which is to /it its studends to become school teachers, then why should not the State support the law and medical colleges of the State, which fit out students to become lawyers ami doctors? Do you see any reason for discrimination in favor of the school student over the law or medical student'?
IT WON'T BE HANLEY.
It is evident that out of the vast number of candidates for U. S. Senator before the legislature the honor will not fall on the Lafayette statesman, J. Frank Ilanley. His candidacy is a stupendous exhibition of gall, I5eyond four or five years ago nobody ever heard of J, Frank Hanley, and what he has done in particular to recommend him for the position no one knows. lie is an ex-CoLgreseman, haviner, we believe, served one term, but what of that. There are scores of ex-Congress-men in Indiana- None of them are considered particularly brainy or great because they have been members of CoDgress, After the race is closed it will be found that. J. Frank is not the lucky man, and he can continue in law practice on "the banks of the Wabaeh far away."' Unfortunately for hiin there are others much more prominent than he seeking the prize, and with much greater promises of success.
THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE.
At the convening of Congress last week President McKinley's message was read to the members. It is a very long article, and treats upon about every matter with which the government can have any interest. The Spaniah war matter is taken up and embraces a large share of the message,

GOOD PICKING.
Appropriations will be recommended by the Governor of the State for enlarging the school buildings for th^ fi-chle mindad children at Ft. Wayne, additional buildings for the penitentiary a at Richmond and Logansport, for the reformatory at Jt tfersonville, for the State educational institutions at Lafavette, Terre Haute and other places. It is quite evident that dealers in stone and iron for buil ling purposes, and contractors for wood work of State buildings wili have good fat picking in this State next year if they but secure the proper "pull'' with the politicians. There is rarely any public work of this kind but what there is a job in it, and quite often shoddy material is used in buildings put up in slop r^hop style, but for which the highest prices are paid It has been so before—it will be again. A Estate building of first class construction, erected at a reasonable price is rarely to be seen.
A BEVERIDGE BOOM.
Kurnal John Wingate, of Wingate, is a boomer for Beveridge, the Indianapolis c.indiuate for U. S. Senator. He seeuis to be sole manager of the boom, and calls the Beverige crowd together whenever he things it necessary. The people of Montgomery county are wondering where the Kurnal's sudden greatness and ponderous influence comes from. If ever he amounted to anything politically, pecuniarily, socially, or any other way, few in this county ever before were aware of it, yet at this time he seems to be one of the big guns of the party. Wingate is said to be the man who discovered Jim Mount and elected him Governor, and is now going to put Beveridge in the U. S. Senator's seat in Congress. May be he will, but the indications are that may be he won't, as there are several other great men in the party aside from Beveridge.
There is more Catarrh in this section of the'country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable, For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co.. Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a teaspoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address.1

IP from the overworked condition of the li.er and kidneys which are unable to expel impurities from the blood. This causes rheumatism. Hood's rheumatism. H'-od's Sarsaparilla has been wonderfully successful in curing this disease. It neutralizes the acid in the blood and permanently cures the aches and pains which other medicines fail to relieve. Hood's Sarsaparilla is the best winter medicine because it purifies, enriches and vitalizes the blood. It gives help just where help is needed. It tones the stomach, stimulates the liver, and arouses and sustains the kidneys. It wards off pneumonia, fevers, bronchitis, colds, coughs, and the grip.

Loss of Flowers and Plants.
Saturday night the flower and plant conservatory of Thomas Berkshire, situated on the Daniel Boraker farm, three and a half miles we6t of the city, caught fire and was totally destroyed. In the conservatory were from 300 to 500 potted plants, all of which were ruined by the heat and smoke. Mr, B.'a loss is several hundred dollars with no insurance. The tire is supposed to have occurred from an overheated furnace, used in generating heat to prevent freezing of the plants.
A- Bit of History.
We produce in another column of this issue of THE REVIEWan article from the pen of Daniel Morris which is of more than ordinary interest. It is a graphic description of the famous Indian expedition of 1877 and the observations are from a man who was in the march from start to finish. Mr. Morris raB a member of the 7th U. S. Cavalry from 1374 to 1879 and has promised us a series of articles on the numerous Indian campaigns in which he participated.

Stomach trouble is very iistreesing' very ot stinate, very dangerous. Many of the most dangerous diseases begin with Biniplo indigestion. The reason is that indigestion (not-digestion, not nourishment) weakens the ssystemand allows disease germs to attack it. The antidote is Shaker Diges'ive Cordial, strengthening, nourishing, curative. It cures indigestion nd renews strength and health. It does this by strengthening the stomach, by helping it to digest your food. It nourishes you. Shaker Digestive Cerdial is madoof pure herbs, plants and wines, is perfect harmless and certainly cures all genuine stomach trouble. Sold by druggists, price 10 cents to Sl.00 per bottle.

In all stages of Nas.il Catarrh there should be cleanliness. As experience proves Ely's Cream Balm is a cleaner, soother and healer of the diseased membraoe. It is not drying nor irritating, and does not produce sneezing. To test it a trial size is mailed for 10 cents or the larger for 50 cents by Ely Brothers, 56 Wa.ren Street, New York. Druggists keep it. Upon being aced into the nostrils it spreads over the membrane and relief is immediate. It is an agreeable cure.
