ORGANIZE NOW. is
The Presidential election in 1900 takes place within less than two years. Already Ilanna, tbe commander of the McKinley forces in 1896, joined by the political representatives of the trusts, protected corporations and financial institutions, are taking the preliminary steps for the campaign again soon to occur. Why not tha democracy begin the work of organizing now. It is the well drilled soldiers who almost always win the fight over the raw recruits. Begin the work now in advance of the campaign and we are on equal footing witn our political adversaries when the contest opeos. Right here is where one cause for republican success can be accounted for—they are generally better organized and better equipped in consequence for the contest. Tbe dissemination of proper political matter should be among the first acts toward organization. Later on put before the people a platform of principles that are correctly democratic, that will appeal to the sense and not sentiment of the people, and we are already well armed for the fray. The next campaign, like the last, will be lively and exciting, but the republicans have no certainty of success if we but act wisely, energetically and sincerely on our part in the political struggle ahead. Again we say the time to begin work is now, not eighteen months hence.
THE SENATORIAL WRANGLE.
Republican leaders in the race for Senator to succeed Turpie before the State legislature promise to have an exciting time. There are some eight or nine names mentioned for the position, with Beveridgo and Steele probably in the lead. Asiae from ex-President Harrison or Taylor, of Ft. Wayne, there is a field of mediocrity to select from. What such men as Hanley, Mount, Posey and others have ever done to entitle them to the high position of United States Senator, is more than tbe public can comprehend. It requites, we believe, polish, experience, a tine legal mind, familiarity with laws of other nations as well as our own to tit a man for U. S. Senator. Are any of these men especially thus blessed? If so, the public has probably forgotten it. The office now is simply a toy for the politicians, and the man with the strongest "pull," lltness not being taken into consideration, will no doubt got it.
ABOLISH THE OFFICES.
Whatever else the State legislature may do it is sincerely to be hoped that they will create no more new offices, but rather seek to abolish many of th etn. We now have the truant officer, the county assessor and other sinecures that we did not havo ten years, and and many of which we can get along without now as well as then. The State is too much cursed now with many lazy devils holding offices for which there is no real use, and who from want of self reliance to gain a livelihood by toil or by private resources force themselves as paupers upon the tax payers. Every county and city of the State is burdened with them, with men who spend half their lives seeking soft jobs off of the public. Let the legislature if true to the interests of the people give no hope to this class of the community whatever else itmav do.
NON-PARTISAN BOARD.
Gov. Mount has a level head in favoring and enforcing the rule that our State benevolent institutions should have no politics mixed up iu the selection of boarus controlling them. The institutions can always bo much better managed where politics is not taken into control in the selection of officers to manage them. This does not suit the views of a large number of place wanting dead beats, but the people will sustain the Governor on the stand he has taken in the matter, and it is hoped that all future Governors will be of the same opinion on the subject.
ABOLISHING THE OFFICE OF TRUSTEE. A bill for the enactment of a law abolishing the office of township trustee will be introduced at (he ensuing session of thf legislature, and placing the different dune? of the office in ai many different haiiis. For instance, the iimtterof roads in tbe hands of a road supervisor of tbe township, schools in the hands of a school trustee, the pauper business ID ihe hands of some one of each township to especially look after such business. By the pro-po=-ed change it is thought the affairs of a township can be managed better and cheaper in the interest of tax pu\ers than at present. Tbe complaint ha9 been growing for years in tbo State that the office of township trustee and the expenses incurred by him ate too high, Hnd that extravagance too often marks his work, that he has entirely too much authority delegated to him through which often useless expenditures are made, etc. Whether a change beneficial can be made we know not, and whether it would not prove more expensive than the present way is yet to be decided. There is one thing yet it might be well to mention. The trustee has not yet had his say, has not yet formed bis lobby to capture the legislature, which he will undoubtedly do if he starts out tor that purpose. We have little faith in any proposed reforms being created at the next session of the legislature. It is largely republican and contains many hungry fellows. The trustees, we believe, need not lose any sleep over the matter. It is not very probable they will be bothered.
SIGNED THE AGREEMENT.
The Spanish commissioners in session last week in Paris agreed to a treaty relinquishing the entire Philippine islands, besides ceding to us Puerto Rico, one of the Ladrone islands, and forever withdrawing from the control of Cuba, All these countries belong or are under the control hereafter of the United States. The war was begun in April hist in the interest of ''humanit)" and it seems that we now have enough of it on hand to keep us busy
EXCESSIVE COMPETITION.
Through excessive competition amot.g tbe newspaper men at Tipton, one of them has obligated himself to do all the county printing amounting to between 83,000 and $4,000 for £1, and has given bond for the same. His creditors, if he has any, should at once take steps to secure their claims.
There is more Catarrh in this section of the'country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few year? was supposed to be incurable, For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it in curable, Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. .T. Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken internally in doses from 10 drops to a teaepoonful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surf aces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for any case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Address.
