Boys,
if you can not
remain in the meeting until it closes you should stay away. The evangelists have been here four weeks and have done a great deal of good if ihey do have to hold their meetings in Shelby hall. That answers almost as well as the churcher.
The evungelists who cauie here some time ago are still ooing good. Many are on the move making a start for better lives. May the good work go on until not a sinner is left in these parte,
Bro. J. J. Claypool, our preacher, filled the pulpit in the M.E. church last Sunday and had a good audience. Quarterly meeting will be held two weeks from last Saturday and Sunday
Uncle Joa Newkirk had a good^blind mare to die last Sunday night with a disease that no one seems to know anything about. Ellis Newkirk had a good mare that had fits and went stone blind for a week, and then her eight Blightly returned, but she is still very v.cious.
It is the case sometimes that in giving a man an olTice it helps him, and it bo happens sometimes that a little office makes a man very foolish, especially if he drinks strong drinks until he has snakes or elephants in his shoes, as they say was the case with one John McCorkle, an ex-city marshal. He is accused of something be claims he knows nothing about, but how that is we are unable to say, more than he must have been iu his right mind at the time.
It is reported that John McCorkle is at home sick, returning on Thursday night of last week He keeps in doors and does not parade the streets. There are a great many here who think that he is innocent of the charges against him. For our pirt we think he was crazed with whisky until be did not know what he did do. Evprj voter in our broad land irf responsible for his drinking for we gave the Gtiioon men li cenae to sell it, and God will hold accountable.

A number of hoodlums from Longvie A' came out to the pie social at the Molntyre school house, on Friday i:igUt of last week, for the purpose of creating a disturbance. They went back faster than they came.
We had a hilarious old time down to Alcano's, last Saturday night, in spite of those outlandish Bristle Ridgere. They didn't take the hint 1 nave them la^t week, but had to intrude thfir unwelcome presence upon us again. If we tind out who it is that gives them tip?, we will ostracize him.

On last Sunday Wesley SDyder, Clem Watkins, George McConnell, and Alvin Taylor—four of the best boys in Benton county—and Grant Miller and family and myself, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel (S-indy) Morris. Sandy started out on his wheel about 4 o'clock that morning to n3et the gentlemen from Oxford. He met them at Newtown and escorted them to his hospitable home on Black creek, where a warm reception awaited them. The boys made the run from Oxford, a distance of over 40 miles, against a strong wind, in a little loss than seven hours. This is re markably well, considering the many delays caused by punctures, wrecks, etc.
Abont 1 o'clock we all sat down to a magnificent meal which reflected credit on our clever little hostess. Mrs. Morris is certainly an expert in the culinary art. Mrs. Grant Miller and I rendered aei-istanco in preparing the victuals. I killed the chickens and eho made the gravy. Wee. said that, although they had eaten six breakfasts since leaving Oxford, they were hungry as wolves, and the way they dived into the dishes waB amazing to behold. After dinner the boys started out to take a little jaunt, and as they came to the eld school house where lly White used to teach.
Wes. thought of the many happy hours passed in that building whore we used to hold ''literary" and rehearse ''One Hundred Years Ago," "The Crowded Hotel" and other plays. On their way back the boys, led by Sandy, made a gallant charge on the Douglass water melon patch. No battle scene in Cuba presented a more desolate appearance than that patch after the boys retired* leaving many mangled remains upon the field. They mounted their wheels about -1:30 and. accompanied by Sandy, started for_Os.ford. ,V Polly Packk.

GOLD AND SILVER.
One of the orgumrms made by the advocates of the 1 roe and unlimited coinage of silver is bhsed upon statistics relating to the. fact that the amount of gold aud silver coiu iu the world is approximately and practiea ly equal. Secretary Gaue of the United States treasury department estimates the gold and silver coin iu the world as follows: Gold coin $4,3o9.(W,000. Silver coin 4,20S.3'K),000
Total $8.5G7.!)U0.008 The current estimate of the world's population is 1,500,000,000. Acceptiug the estimate and it is seen that the gold coin iu the world is equal to $2.90 per capita, aud that the silver coin is equal to $2. SO per capita, or that the total coins of the two metals is equal to $5.70

winded resolutions of condolence. Now, But it is replied that such estimates a few kind words spoken to the lining are of little consequence because the are worth ten thousand pageB of such balderdash. No true Christian would be so sacnligi-uis as to write: "Whereas, it has jileaxed God to remove our dear brother," etc. Such ideas were generated in heathenish minds.
population of the world includes savages and barbarians in all of the zones. That is true, aud to meet the objection, 500,000,000 of the estimate is omitted, reducing the total to $1,000,000,000. This would give the civilized population of the world $4.35 per capita in gold and $4.20 per capita iu silver, or in both coins $$.55 per capita.
It should be remembered that this close equality of the two metals as money is not of recent date, but as Mr. Shafroth says, has been the case "at almost all stages of the world's history." That such conditions should have existed is not necessarily miraculous, but it is, nevertheless, most extraordinary, and would seem to have been brought about by providential oversight, as mnch so as that, by some occult design, the sexes have been maintained through all ages as about equal. At any rate this equality in amount or value of gold and silver seems to be the order of nature and of wise design.
The gold advocates propose to strike down silver as primary money, to reduce it to subsiduary money, to redeemable money in the interest of gold standard advocates abroad and in the United States, aud this outrage upon the great mass of the people is proposed without a scintilla of proof that either individuals, communities, municipalities, states or nations have ever suffered by bimetallism, the use of gold and silver at such ratios as have been established by law or custom as standard money. And if a motive is sought tor placing gold on the throne with a Grown on its head, and silver on the scaffold with a halter around its neck, one, aud only one, will be found, aud that motive will be to enable the rich men effectually to plunder the poor.
